A couple of rants
Tuesday 15th April 2003 11:29 pm

I don't understand women. Really I don't. It's not that they're complicated. They're simple, they just don't make sense. I mean, clothes, wine, cooking, boyfriends. If your clothes fall apart you get new ones; why drink wine when you can drink beer or spirits; you cook cos you need to eat and can't afford takeways, it doesn't involve cookbooks; it it not necessary for continued existence to have a boyfriend. Really, it isn't. I would say it's something to do with spending 3 years at uni with mostly blokes, but I spent 6 years at a girls school, so it's not that. This doesn't go for all women of course, just most of them. What is it with clothes that show your midriff (however big or small it may be)? Admittedly, I can't do that even if I want to, midriff-baring tops come past my midriff, but that's not the point.

Men, on the other hand, are simple. Beer, sex, football, girls (with big tits). Not necessarily in that order.

The smoking rant - because I can't remember if I've done one yet. In America (and I believe Australia) it is illegal to smoke in public places. Over here, as of 1st April, it is illegal to advertise cigarettes. We're so far behind. Watching Queer as Folk at the weekend I thought I'd love to do that - go out every night to the pub/club etc. But I can't because I can only wash all my clothes so many times a week. I also like to breathe. A novel idea, I know. You can go to the pub and not drink, so why can't you go and not breathe in other people's smoke? There are less people who smoke these days than there used to. It's certainly not 'cool' or 'in' any more.

The part that worries me is that it's still fine to do research on cigarettes. We have a cigarette project coming up, probably. Low tar, as if that makes any difference at all. No-one should be spending money on getting people to smoke. Getting them to give up, fine. That's not easy, I understand that. I just don't understand how people can justify spending so much money to pollute other people's atmosphere and killing themselves, and others. Which is what they're doing. It's a slow form of suicide. If they didn't exist my asthma wouldn't be nearly so bad and my granddad would be still alive. Isn't that a good enough reason?

I can't say I've conducted an extensive scientific survey, but generally, smokers are less intelligent than non-smokers. Perhaps they're too thick to understand why they shouldn't. Any parents really have no excuse - young children shouldn't be exposed to smoke and they will also think it's normal. It isn't. At least drugs only affect the person taking them (at least directly, I'm not counting things like drinking and driving because they don't affect other people in exactly the same way as the person taking the drugs/drink).
