Friday Five

What am I going to do after tomorrow and there's no more tennis?
Friday Five, cos I wasn't in much last night to do it: 1. What were your favorite childhood stories?
I definitely remember Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass. Enid Blyton - I remember Noddy, the Secret Seven and the Famous Five. There were some others about some kids at boarding school, and another series about kids at the Royal Ballet school, but I don't remember what they were called. Thomas the Tank Engine as well - they came in odd-shaped books with different colour covers.
2. What books from your childhood would you like to share with [your] children?
Alice, I suppose. And I think all kids should read Enid Blyton - and not through the cynical/sexual eyes of an adult either.
3. Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything?
I've been surprised by how much I've forgotten.
4. How old were you when you first learned to read?
Don't know, but I knew how to read by the time I went to school at 4.
5. Do you remember the first 'grown-up' book you read? How old were you?
No, but I suspect I was quite young as my teachers thought I should read more improving (ie boring) books with lots of hard words that made no sense at all. I definitely remember being told that at middle school and rebelling by reading a series about cheerleaders and Sweet Valley High.
