Lord of the Rings memes
Friday 30th January 2004 6:10 pm
Fun with memes! It's all the fault of fileg and undonne
I know what I'd really like but I'll settle for either of these:
On the other hand, both of these sound good to me:

Viruses
Thursday 29th January 2004 9:43 pm
Discworld: Which Ankh-Morpork City Watch Character are YOU? brought to you by Quizilla
I'm feeling all excited about viruses. Looking at Norton I can see I've had the new one - Novarg - nine times (including three times tonight), Mimail twice (hadn't heard of that one) and Klez.H I had Klez.E a lot but I'm quite excited about H!
Of course the reason I'm excited is that: a. Norton catches these and b. I don't open them so I don't get viruses
The reason I'm so well protected is I got a virus once off a web site - luckily it was one that only e-mailed your username and password out from what you type. As what I typed at the time was 'p' and IE filled in the rest, and ZoneAlarm stopped it from going out, it wasn't a problem.
I can't say how much I love Norton though because it does everything for you. With my old virus program I had to specifically tell it to check things and update its definitions. Norton does everything, which is good, because I'd forget. Which reminds me, I need to do some backups.
I didn't go to Swindon today. I was quite lazy this morning (apart from finishing off yesterday's work, which involved getting out my old computer to get onto the network) but then this afternoon I did two and half hours of spring cleaning - and filled half a bin bag. The rest I'll save for the weekend, although I still have to write up the Rotaract minutes, speak to the Ladygrove magazine editor about getting a piece about Rotaract in there, and do some betaing which I said I'd do last weekend. Mind you, I also need to make some CDs, tidy my hard drive and watch all the millions of videos I've downloaded (and the rest of the TT DVD). It'd be handy if I didn't have to fit going to work in all that.
I did rediscover an funny site though: Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing - lists of forum posts from various websites from people wanting to name their kids really bizarre names. They have to be read to be believed.

LOTR Drabble
Wednesday 28th January 2004 8:02 pm
I wrote a drabble for LOTR100 - Learning from the Best. I finally managed an Elrond & Estel thing and got some fencing in there. I'm happy now.
It has snowed. Typically, just before I was supposed to be going to Swindon to see Michael Shanks and Chris Judge. Now I'm thinking it will be far more effort than it's worth. I might stay in and do something constructive instead, and finish off the work I was doing before I left work early.
I also need to watch Stargate and do some ironing.

Wimbledon tickets
Monday 26th January 2004 11:26 pm
I just had a phone call from my sister to tell me we'd got tickets for Ladies Singles semi-finals in the Wimbledon ballot. And I can't go because my boss is going on honeymoon over Wimbledon (she has a history of going on holiday over Christmas, New Year and Wimbledon) so I can't possibly have any time off whatsoever (there only being three people in our department and one of them only started at the beginning of January).
Work have a tendency to be ridiculously inflexible - when I've been ill and gone in all they want to point out is all the stuff I've done wrong (while I've been ill and not had a brain). So when I was really ill with flu (and I mean not able to stay awake for longer than a few hours) they did their level best to convince me to come in.
I so need a new job it's silly.

Flying penguin
Saturday 24th January 2004 10:10 am
Flying Penguin - My best is just over 300m. Someone in our office managed 320m though (you can see lots of work was done Friday afternoon).
I managed to kill the bottom of my big toes at TKD last night. Tonight I'm off to Burns Supper, which is black tie. I can't walk properly wearing thick slipper socks and flat slippers. So quite how I'm going to manage heals I'm not sure. If I eat enough vodka jelly beforehand I'll probably be fine

Life, don’t talk to me about life
Thursday 22nd January 2004 11:23 pm
I actually found a subject to make friends-only on lj! It's quite sad that I'm excited about that. But then the entry's sadder...
I think I'm the only person at work who doesn't have a car, or an other half with a car. I'm one of the few single people as well, I think. Someone else announced today she got engaged - they're suddenly all getting married off. Someone pointed out that the social club was much better when the company was single. Mind you, most of them are going out with each other.
It gets kinda depressing as well - being around these people all the time makes you think you have to have a boyfriend or girlfriend to be normal. I just have to remember the opposite is true. And get pissed on Saturday and pull one of the single people there - which seems to be an increasingly small number of people.
I seriously need more sleep. And fewer useless Danish people.

LOTR Mah Jongg
Monday 19th January 2004 8:49 pm

You're the Falkland Islands!
You're pretty insignificant in the big picture, but when you have influence, it affects the most important people in your world. Sadly, you don't have much of a will or voice of your own, and it's hard to develop it when your big aspirations are to live on a farm. Your emotional life is stormy and windswept, but you have a few close friends that follow you like, well, sheep. Take the Country Quiz at the Blue Pyramid
And that's what random clicking will get you. Mind you, the entire last sentence is based on whether you like sheep.
Since I've ended up playing Lord of the Rings Mah Jongg (well, Orlando Bloom Mah Jongg, but really, who can blame me?) I feel the need to try not to die in Fellowship and have a go at Farscape.

Rob Grant
Friday 16th January 2004 11:31 pm
I got to meet Rob Grant on Wednesday, which was very cool. I happened to be walking past the Waterstones last Saturday and noticed the posters but I fully expected it to be during the day - but no it was a time in the evening I could actually make! We got drinks and nibbles as well. He talked about some interesting stuff and I ended up buying the book, which I think was more interesting before the plot started. But still, it's quite good and relatively cheap.
I also found Teachers on bittorrent. Well, the first two episodes anyway. I didn't start watching it till the end of the second series so it's really weird going back when all the characters were different. Well, some of them anyway.
I was good and went to Tae Kwon Do tonight. Whether I'll be able to walk this weekend is something else.

WHSmith
Sunday 11th January 2004 11:14 pm
Smiths is doing my head in. I have a 15 gift voucher for them from work. So, since I don't buy much there as its cheaper elsewhere, I thought I'd get Two Towers extended DVD, like I did last year with Fellowship. So I go into Poole before Christmas and every shop has it exept for Smiths. So then I went to Reading yesterday and every shop had it except Smiths. Next weekend I'll try Oxford - they'd better have it!
I did a bit of research into Australia. I have to go to Borders though and read some guidebooks. I have to decide where I want to go and how to get there. Or pick a few options that I can take to STA Travel and find out prices. If they can cope with anything that far ahead anyway.
I did buy Fellowship game though, since it was cheap. I was doing quite well until I died. Haven't made it out of the Shire though... On the plus side I died just before Stargate so it was well-timed in the end.
Since fileg and undonne have done it, I'll do the LJ meme as well. Why not?
1. your live journal "user name" & what it means?
Now here's a long story. It starts in my first year at uni when we'd play Quake all night. I needed to come up with a name for that and thought of Paranoid Android. Sadly, unless I took the space out, Quake wouldn't let me have a name that long. So I went with Paranoid which did describe me well. It went with the Garbage song, I Think I'm Paranoid as well.
So far, so good. Then I got a computer of my own (which I still have, old as it is) and a freeserve account to connect to the internet with. They operated a system where you have an e-mail address which is name@something.freeserve.co.uk. I thought I'd use nic as the name and paranoid as the something. Except that someone already had it. So I can up with the angel part from Angel (who was still in Buffy at the time).
Someone else got to paranoidangel on lj before me though. I don't have to explain where the 42 comes from do I?
2. on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest) how well does your livejournal represent who you are?
Bollox knows. I don't do 1-10 scales, I have enough of that at work.
3. how much about your life do you post to lj?
Not at that much really. I'll post stuff that I'll tell friends, but not stuff I would only tell really close friends.
4. Is there anything you refuse to post about?
Oh, yes. But I refuse to say what it is because that would contradict my answer.
5. on a scale of 1-10 how interesting do you think your own journal is to others?
1? See answer to 2.
6. from who/how did you find out about lj?
From bored.com, many years ago. I didn't join at the time because someone already had paranoidangel.
7. has anyone ever joined lj because of you?
I don't think so.
8. what proportion of your posts are friends only?
None so far. But then I've only just started putting my posts on lj as well, so that may change in the future.
9. what is your favourite interest on lj?
All of them. Else why would they be there?
10. Has anything on lj ever caused you to establish, rethink, or even change your belief or position on something?
I don't think so. Can't remember where I read half of the stuff I do anyway.
11. how often do you respond / comment on other peoples journals?
Sometimes. Usually if I know them from elsewhere and I have something to say.
12. do you prefer to write in your journal, read other journals?
Read others, I suppose. I do more reading than writing anyway.
13. have you ever had something mean said to you or been stalked, harassed, or got into an argument/flame war on lj?
Nope.
14. have you ever banned someone from your journal?
No.
15. who are your favourite lj friend(s) and why?
All of them. Otherwise why would I have friended them?
16. how many of your LJ friends have you actually met?
One. But to be fair, most of them are in another country.
17. of all of the people on lj you know of, who is the most like you?
Nic has a name most like mine
18. why are you most likely to add someone to your friends list?
Because I know them from elsewhere or I am interested in what they have to say.
19. do you automatically add friends to your journal if they add you first?
Yes. I figure that if they find what I have to say interesting I'll also be interested in what they say.
20. what is the most likely reason you wouldn't add someone to your friends list?
They bored the pants off me?
21. is your "significant other" on lj?
You mean Orlando Bloom?
22. have you ever wanted to meet someone on lj?
Yes. All the ones on my friends list I haven't met.
Edit: They're playing Mandy on the radio at the moment. I can't quite get over the real thing - I keep expecting Angel to sing it badly

New Years Resolutions
Friday 9th January 2004 6:06 pm
Since everyone was talking about it at work today here are my New Years Resolutions: (technically I only have one but then I have ways to apply it)
Make sure 2004 is better than 2003 by:
a. Keeping in contact with my friends - specially the ones I haven't seen for a while
b. Getting pissed more often
c. Going out more often
d. Getting more snogs and generally flirting more often (see b and c)
e. Going to Tae Kwon Do at least once a week (I would say more often but that's the same thing at this stage)
f. Going to fencing at least once a month
g. Learning grammar - and more importantly how to apply it
g. Learning how to beta read
h. Learning french
i. Keeping my computer tidy (already failed)
j. Making more time to play computer games
k. Seeing more films (even if they're last years I haven't got round to watching yet and involve going to the video shop for)
l. Booking trip to Australia

Can’t live without…
Friday 9th January 2004 12:31 am
I'd just like to say how much I hate computers and love the new control panel for my site. I wondered if XP had a BSOD, and guess what, it does! Needless to say my computer crashed twice tonight. I'm trying to work out whether it's more or less than my old one and then I remember that this one restarts in less than half the time. Plus I can't type on the old one anymore.
I've discovered that I can do all the things I have bravenet doing on my site with the control panel. How cool is that? I will have to have a play about with it at some point. Plus my new tracker tells me what people have google searched for. There was one hit from someone who searched for "beach swim trunks hi res". To be fair it is entirely possible I have used all of those words in the space of seven posts (or however many are on the main page, I forget) but I really don't think that was what they were looking for. 'elrond angst' on the other hand...
Other cool things I don't know how I lived without until now:
Roboform - no more typing in usernames and passwords! And it keeps a list of them. If anyone nicked my computer I'd be stuffed but since I have problems remembering my username, never mind my password (and in the case of one site, the answer to my security question) it's so helpful.
SpamNet - okay, so it does miss quite a few but I don't spend all my time adding my spam to the blacklist
Outlook Express with OE Quote Fix - smilies look like smilies! How cool is that? Plus colour to tell me who said what, sorting mail, marking as unread, actually replying below (although that doesn't work when people reply above - I suddenly find I can't find my sig). I still haven't got the hang of the keys yet though and I hate not being able to see e-mail addresses
The new version of WordPad - remembers I want to write in arial size 10!
TV on the computer
System Restore
Rubber duck! and fish!

Stargate
Wednesday 7th January 2004 10:42 pm
I just saw the latest episode of Stargate tonight. Which was handy because I really don't have a brain tonight. I am planning to actually go to bed early and read ROTK. I'm nearly at the Frodo & Sam stuff, which is good. Anyway, I liked it. I know the slashers are complaining, although I'm not reading it and I can imagine the shippers are too. There are times when I really hate the fandom, hence the reason I'm not going near it just now. I am still a shipper at heart but I liked it. Besides, it had Sam's dad in, which is always a good thing
Why can't it be Friday already?

Writing meme
Monday 5th January 2004 8:18 pm
I read this in someone's journal a while ago and only just now realised I have answers to these questions!
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Definitely more. I think I wrote more in 2003 than I wrote ever. I'm still trying to decide whether to polish some of it or leave it along though.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2003?
Fandom - Lord of the Rings. I mean, where did that one come from? It's not a pairing, but Elrond and Aragorn. Before Aragorn opened the doors I practically had no idea who he was. He wasn't important in the books after all - he played no factor in the relationship between Frodo and Sam which is what the thing is all about after all. I should have read the Tale of A&A earlier. I can never resist the chance for a good dysfuctional family.
Also, writing some TPM, even if it only was a few drabbles for TPM100. I enjoyed getting back into Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan (not literally, take your mind out of the gutter).
I suppose technically I managed to write John/D'Argo (Farscape) and Daniel/Jonas (Stargate) as well.
What's your favourite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest.
I do have a soft spot for Servants because I had to create my own characters for that, which was both hard and fun.
Poetry-wise there's the one I wrote for fileg's birthday. It's not going outside of HASA but it was the first Faramir I'd written and the first terzanelle. I sweated blood over it but enjoyed every minute. I'm less worried about whether it was good - it fits the form and that's enough for me at the moment.
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?
I wrote poetry. I mean real stuff, not just limericks. And I liked it. *waves to fileg* It's all your fault, you know
Do you have any fanfic or pro-fic goals for the New Year?
I actually haven't attempted any poetry for a while. I'd like to write more for the drabble communities, especially TPM100. I'd like to write one of the long things currently in my head. I'd like to get back into Farscape. But if all I do is improve I'll be happy.
I have to say something about two lj communities I discovered recently but thought I wouldn't be that interested in. ewan_daily and orlando_daily. There I am, reading through my friends page and scattered through are pictures of good-looking blokes! To be fair, it does need adsl (I can read a whole page before the pictures load on dial-up). But still. These are pictures of Ewan McGregor and Orlando Bloom here. What more could you ask for? (Blogger to save my draft posts would be nice though)

Canon NO Fanon
Saturday 3rd January 2004 9:45 pm
I was having a look through the Canon NO Fanon site. It was very interesting to see the sources quoted for everything but I came across the one about Elrond marrying someone after Celebrian went over the sea. Which, in my personal canon certainly, is ridiculous. However, I'd love to see it done well.
On an entirely different subject I'm off back to Wallingford tomorrow after spending two weeks at home. I remember being bored last week and not being able to remember what day of the week it was. Now I really don't want to go back. Although I am still bored - although it's not from having nothing to do, it's not being bothered to do anything. I don't actually mind going back to work so much because it won't be so busy and because new boy will be starting soon, which will be different at least. I'm not looking forward to having to do my own cooking and washing though.
The last post I wrote in livejournal first and then I realised I needed to put in a couple of links. I was feeling too lazy to type in the html so I copied it to blogger, put in the links and then copied it back to livejournal. I do keep trying to press upload file rather than insert link though - I should learn the shortcuts, that would probably help.

Drabble and rec
Friday 2nd January 2004 5:32 pm
I actually managed to write a drabble for LOTR100: Be Careful What You Wish For. Now I just need to get myself sorted and write one every week - and for TPM100. And read them all as well. Hmm. I'm still trying to catch up on all my reading as it is.
I have a new rec though - Darkest Before the Dawn by Losseniaiel - with a nice bit of Elrond angst - what more could you ask for?

Mary Sue meme
Friday 2nd January 2004 10:45 am
What LotR Mary Sue cliche are you? brought to you by Quizilla
I'm definitely sensing a theme here. But then it could be something to do with these quizzes asking about swords and of course I'm going to pick that as my answer.
I have now recovered from New Year where I did indeed get pissed. Although the kind where I go from sober to asleep so that part was quite boring. I then spent yesterday tired and dehydrated. Which was just the kind of brain level necessary for The Bill. I also got through half of Scream of the Shalka, which I was quite impressed about. I should now do something productive. Or not.
