Rotaract
Thursday 30th June 2005 10:40 pm
I think I've done this one before but the picture's pretty.
You are dependable, popular, and observant. Deep and thoughtful, you are prone to moodiness. In fact, your emotions tend to influence everything you do.
You are unique, creative, and expressive. You don't mind waving your freak flag every once and a while. And lucky for you, most people find your weird ways charming! |
Rotaract
On Tuesday we had our handover. The Rotary, and therefore Rotaract, year runs from July to June. Which means that as of Tuesday evening, or tomorrow, depending on how you look at it, I'm not president any more. It hasn't actually made a great deal of difference so far. I've still got a to do list from Tuesday's meeting that I'll probably do tomorrow night as there's nothing on once the tennis has finished. This is partly because in July we are having a tinshake, a stall at the town charity fair, and there's a fair bit going on on Charter weekend. All of which needs stuff doing.
However, I do now own 2001 on DVD, courtesy of the club, who are all fantastic people, even without the DVD. It's great when you hand over running something to other people and they come back having done loads of stuff and thought of things I haven't. And we've raised about 880 for charity, all local ones except the Aquabox.
But the hard part is only being able to help people with a small amount of money and a small amount of time, and even then you can only help a few. I was reminded recently that I really want to do Habitat for Humanity, although my milk intolerance makes it harder, especially in a foreign country.
I just watched a program called Allergic to Everything which showed people with really bad allergies. Which does make me feel more lucky. But I realised I should go and get myself allergy tested because I think I'm allergic to chilli and my reaction sounds worryingly like it's going towards anaphylactic shock. And get some intolerance tests done. There's a part of me that still doesn't quite believe I am lactose intolerant and I keep testing it by eating things with milk in (not a lot though, I haven't been very ill yet). But if I'm going to make myself ill occasionally, I might as well do it for a test that will tell me definitely one way or the other.
Plus my mum seems to be developing allergies/intolerances for all sorts of things at the moment and they're inheritable.

Weekend
Sunday 26th June 2005 9:39 pm
Apart from forgetting to turn my alarm off Friday morning and being woken up by it Saturday morning and failing to get back to sleep, I've had a good weekend. I just about managed to get up and get dressed before the tennis started on Saturday. The Andy Murray match wore me out but on the whole it was the most interesting match of the day. But hopefully once we're into the second week the matches will get closer and more exciting.
I completely failed to stay up till the end of Glastonbury on either night, so ended up taping it. I am enjoying it though - there's all sorts of music I'm finding I like by people I'd never previously heard of. Or thought I'd heard of anyway. And lots of Coldplay, who were excellent.
I've also discovered ebay. I'm used to looking on amazon new and used for cheaper books (which often aren't when you take into account that you pay p&p on those but not on the main site (because I always make sure to spend £19)) but I could never get my head round the bidding. I've worked it out now but I'm still trying to work out whether it's worth selling some of my stuff I want to get rid of. I might just give up and charity it, if I could just pick a charity shop (we have quite a lot round here).

I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue about tennis
Thursday 23rd June 2005 10:46 pm
I went to see the next two episodes of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue recorded in Oxford last night. It was great to actually see what happens (although I already knew the truth about Samantha and the laser display board). The only complaint was that the theatre was really hot. Although in all fairness, it wasn't that much cooler outside.
Each episode took over an hour to record, so even when they take out the bits that went wrong, there's still quite a bit of that's going to get taken out. It will be interesting to listen and find out what (if I can remember).
The guest was Harry Hill, who I wasn't terribly impressed by until they did a science fiction segment and he did a wonderful Dalek impression without the aid of any props at all. Graeme Garden's Darth Vader was also good but did involve a glass of water.
I won't spoil the episodes but suffice to say they were up to their usual standard.
I found out, while I was there, that Art is coming to the New Theatre, and has Russell Boulter in it! So I will have to go back there to see that.
On my way I stopped off at Borders. Who were doing Doctor Who books at 1.99 and 4 for 3 but they only had two Doctor & Ace books and I've got them both. I was quite interested to discover there is a novelisation of Scream of the Shalka. There was also quite a good selection of Lois McMaster Bujold books, so if I get really stuck with finding them, that's an option.
And onto tennis. I was quite disappointed to miss Greg Rusedski's match yesterday, as it sounds as if it was quite exciting. Mind you, so was Tim Henman's today. But Andy Murray is my little star. Not only did he win a match, but did it in straight sets, beating a seeded opponent, getting him lots of points. Annoyingly, I don't quite have enough money to swap Henman for Roddick (assuming he won after BBC2 stopped at 8.30), so I might get Hewitt instead. Otherwise I only have one man left in! Suffice to say I'm doing quite badly in the fantasy league, but then I was this time last year as well.
I'm really looking forward to a weekend of doing nothing but watching tennis and Glastonbury, except for all those things I've been putting off till the weekend. Which will be good anyway because I'll be bored on Sunday with no tennis to watch.

Wimbledon and Hitchhiker’s
Tuesday 21st June 2005 9:46 pm
It stands to reason that after a fairly boring day, today would be quite exciting. It's easy to forget from one year to the next just how much Henman is really annoying and keeps us on the edge of our seats. But at least he's through, unlike Justine Henin-Hardenne, who is my most expensive player. Andy Murray is my star player though, the only one through in straight sets, which gets him bonus points.
I've swapped Henin-Hardenne for Maria Sharapova now, which gives me enough money to swap Henman for Hewitt if he doesn't buck his ideas up. You only get two transfers, so I will wait and see.
I listened to the last ever episode of Hitchhiker's tonight. Which was quite sad. I wasn't convinced at the new ending at first - I knew they were changing it but nothing more. But it made me laugh. I'll be buying the CD anyway.

Wimbledon
Monday 20th June 2005 9:17 pm
Today's play at Wimbledon was really not all that exciting. Plus, out of the five members of my team (of eight) that played today, two went out (Elena Baltacha and James Blakes). I hope the other three do better tomorrow.
It didn't help that I took my radio to work to listen to it in the afternoon - but failed to put any batteries in it beforehand.

Weather
Sunday 19th June 2005 10:48 pm
I can't believe how hot it's been today. And humid. Which, of course, makes it the perfect day to go to London. The Allergy Show turned out not to be that interesting in the end. Although I tried some very nice chocolate. So I ended up going to find a kosher food shop as I was running out of chocolate spread. So now, not only do I have a hazelnut one, but a stripy one as well. If it was Cadburys it would be milk and white chocolate. Not sure what this one is being as it has no milk in but half the stuff on the label is in Hebrew.
It's really annoying because I'm tired, I'd quite like to go to bed, but there's no way I'm going to get to sleep. Not only is it still too hot, even with the window open but I'm now sharing my room with a variety of flying creatures and my hayfever's bad. It's also too hot to type, so back to the book (only thing you can do when it's this hot)

Doctor Who
Saturday 18th June 2005 7:47 pm
The last few minutes - I wondered if they were going to do that. It makes me wonder at what point that was written and decisions were made etc. But once I saw the light on the hand, I knew.
But, I was actually, for the first time ever, scared of the [censored].
I still have a pink face - I think I must have got sunburnt. I didn't bother with the sun tan lotion because it wasn't that hot or sunny when I left and I thought I would be covered up. But my hood kept slipping, so my face was exposed. Never mind, it'll go back to its normal colour in a couple of days.

Carnival
Saturday 18th June 2005 5:29 pm
This is the fifth carnival they've had here and the first I've actually seen the procession. Well, a part of it anyway, since we were in it. For some reason Carnival day always has extreme weather, apparently. Today was hot.
The theme was Charter, as this year celebrates the 850th anniversary of the charter being granted to the town. So there were a lot of castles and kings and queens about. We did plague, with a cart full of straw (dead bodies), ringing a bell and shouting 'bring out your dead'. Which had to be loud as the baptist church were in a float behind us singing - although this consisted of three songs. After an hour of that we were ready to kill them.
I was death, so I got to wear black, put on a thick black cloak and carry a scythe, which I'd made on Thursday night. We had great fun with the fake blood someone brought along as well.
Needless to say by the time we had done the sun had properly come out and by the time I got home all my clothes were stuck to me. Now I'm completely confused by the time because all I've done is get up, go to carnival, come home and have lunch (at 5pm).
Tomorrow I have to brave the hot tube to go to the allergy show. There had better be chocolate there!

Puzzles
Friday 17th June 2005 10:01 pm
A couple of follow-ups to the Crimson Room:
The Blue Room
The Viridian Room (although the aim of this one isn't to get out)
If you're stuck the walkthroughs to the above are at http://www.thonky.com/viridian/ and http://flippedcracker.net/archives/2004/10/25/blue-chamber-walkthrough/ respectively.
I was having a surf at Think Geek and it would be worrying that the t-shirt saying:
roses are #FF0000 violets are #0000FF all my base are belong to you
made me laugh, except that the hex codes were in colour.
Wimbledon starts on Monday! Looking forward to it. Then there's Glastonbury next weekend, the last Doctor Who for a bit on Saturday and Coldplay are on Later, later tonight. I would be worried that dad likes Coldplay except that he's like me with music (or more probably, I'm like him) in that we both like anything good, no matter when it came from or who. Well, up to a point anyway.
And on the subject of Doctor Who. I've now seen a few Sylvester McCoy's, listened to a Big Finish CD and read a book. And I can't think of a single one where I got to the end of it and actually understood what was going on. Somewhere along the line I seem to miss something important, I think.
Come to think of it, I had the same problem with Shada (although that was partly because I was confused due to the plot not being what I expected) and Scream of the Shalka. I'm understanding the new stuff but then it's shorter and less complicated.
If it's as hot as they say tomorrow I might melt, as we're in the local carnival. I'm playing Death. I even had a home-made scythe, which I'm quite proud of.
I might not watch The Bill from next week. I came home on Sunday and decided to watch The Last Detective. I had no idea what was going on, no idea who'd dunnit but I still enjoyed it. I couldn't help comparing it to The Bill on Wednesday, which I really didn't enjoy at all. There really hasn't been anything worth watching on this week's episodes and the trailer for the next one hasn't really made me want to watch them. If it's a choice between tennis and The Bill, well, it might depend on how pissed off I am at the commentators by then as Radio 5 finish coverage at 7pm, so we're forced to listen to the likes of John MacEnroe and Viginia Wade for an hour and a half.
I also have until Monday lunchtime (so, tomorrow would be a good time) to pick my Fantasy Wimbledon team. Last year's was easy because they just provided a list of four and you picked one, then another four, and so on until you had 8 men and 8 women. This time you have to spend 100k - and Federer is 50k!
And I think that's been a bit rambly. If you can follow this, welcome to my brain!

It's 9 o'clock and I've done everything I need to tonight, which is good. I'm still not used to having all this time - I almost don't know what to do with it. I'd like to write something but I got myself into a crisis of confidence about being able to write and now I really can't. I have just done my betaing though, and I think I'll go and write some reviews for Sel next.
Some links first though:
Hate that Frog - or really, shoot that annoying frog that some mad person thought would be a good idea as a ring tone.
BBC Doctor Who site - you need sound though, for the full effects. It is a big spoiler for the second to last episode though (ie last Saturday's) but not for the last well. As far as I can tell from Saturday's 38 second trailer and today's 16 second one. Which is to say, nothing at all.

Doctor Who
Saturday 11th June 2005 8:06 pm
Because now I've seen the episode I want to watch Confidential (before I forget to watch it) and I can't because it's not up yet
Tonight's episode was good. I thought it was going to finish about halfway through though - it looked like they were all going to be in mortal danger which is pretty standard for Doctor Who cliffhangers. Also, I think I've got used to cross stitching again and now I can't watch anything without getting bored if I'm not cross stitching at the same time. While I was resting my thumb there were quite a few episodes of The Bill I didn't quite watch because I got distracted by the first set of adverts.
Back on the subject, I love Captain Jack. It's impossible to call him Jack, though, I suspect Pirates of the Caribbean might have something to answer for there. A question though - what was the programme he was in? They never told us the title. Is it something along the lines of What Not to Wear?
The internet is a wonderful thing: I've been finding out all sorts of things about the Doctor & Ace's story. Or stories, since there is more than one and they all differ. I realised why I love them. Partly because Ace is totally my role model as a child. Regardless of whether I actually saw it or not I definitely knew who the doctor was (Sylvester McCoy) and I knew who Ace was. So it's sort of like re-discovering my childhood.
And it's also their relationship. It's been interesting seeing how it is between the Doctor and Rose, and Captain Jack. But the one between Ace and the Doctor seems a bit like a father/child relationship to me. From what I've found she didn't know her father, hated her mother and pretty much had no time for authority figures. Okay, so she didn't always do what the Doctor told her (which is, after all, the role of the companion) but they looked after each other and worried about each other. They were certainly friends (when he introduces them he always says, 'my friend, Ace') but because she's so young I think it makes it a different slant on their friendship.
And I seem to love those sorts of relationships. Parent & child ones, whether not related or are related and are dysfunctional. So it explains Elrond & Aragorn, Clark Kent & his parents, Sydney & Jack, Sirius & Harry, Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan & Anakin.

A meme
Thursday 9th June 2005 7:45 pm
As I was tagged by Sel:
1. Favourite scent: Body Shop's White Musk. My hayfever's bad at the moment so I don't remember what it's like to smell anything other than cigarette smoke.
2. Favourite way to relax: A nice comfy armchair, a good book and nothing but the natural (well, ish) sounds of the outside world (apart from a ticking clock. I like clocks).
3. Favourite film you own: 2001
4. Favourite film you don't already own: I would say Trainspotting on the basis I want it on DVD, but I also want 2001 on DVD - but with a big wide screen TV and surround sound to appreciate it properly.
5. Favourite male film star(s): Ewan McGregor. No-one else comes close.
6. Favourite female film star(s): There's none that particularly stand out. I quite like Nicole Kidman though, for having my name.
7. Favourite book genre: I like a bit of science fiction, a bit of crime and a bit of history. Not necessarily in the same book though.
8. Favourite clothing store: Any that sell clothes that fit me. So that would be none of them then.
9. Favourite non-clothing store: Borders. I much prefer it to Waterstones. Although Blackwells in Oxford comes close for it's textbook type of books.
10. Favourite cartoon character: Bugs Bunny. Because he's a bunny.
11. Favourite CD you own: I actually quite like The OC CDs, they're really good background music.
12. Favourite CD you don't already own: Well, I still don't have the Primary and Secondary Phases on CD (I have them on tape - I didn't have a CD player at the time) and I want the Quandary and Quintessential Phases. Do they count?
13. Pass the torch to five of your LJ friends: Nic, Melli, Neil, Avon, Ian

News
Thursday 9th June 2005 7:25 pm
Via Una: Dalek 'kidnappers' demand Doctor. Let's hope it turns up in Edinburgh and gets on the news.
In other news, my BBC news email told me: Pylons 'may be a leukaemia risk'. It sounds like just another scare story for me - there do seem to be quite a lot of people irrationally scared of electricity pylons. Perhaps my perspective is different because I grew up near one but I think they're great. In summer you can see all the birds gathering for bed, which is quite interesting to watch. And they forecast the weather - they hum if it's going to rain, even if there are no clouds in the sky.

I was going to write a proper post but I really don't have the energy. Either my hayfever has gone rampant with the nice weather or I have the cold that's been going round the office. Perhaps I should eat chocolate cake. Yes, that sounds like a good idea. Anyway, some links:
Hurdles - a good Trip/T'Pol fic shocker!
Bad Wolf - the most handy thing is it lists all the bad wolf references - all but one of which I had missed (not including Saturday's episode, obviously).
And the BBC Doctor Who site has gone crazy! I particularly like the 'click to win' link.
Note: these last two links are only really Doctor Who spoilers if you want to know nothing about the episodes at all.

The Dead Zone and Pizza
Wednesday 1st June 2005 10:49 pm
I discovered today I didn't quite manage to tape The Dead Zone last night. I already missed one episode when they stopped and started it, three while I was away, and one because it was the second part of a two-parter just after I got back. But it's a good programme, so it's annoying.
I've got into the habit of checking what time it's on on Tuesday evening and setting the video up. I checked yesterday after I watched Saturday's Murder in Suburbia, and I was slightly amazed to find it was actually on at the same time as last week.
I definitely heard the video turn off last night so I knew it taped. At 8 o'clock my video came on and I ignored it, having checked the TV guide to see there was no Bill because of football. But being paranoid I checked, just in case. And noticed the football said AC Milan vs Liverpool. Now, I have no idea who Liverpool played last week, and I'm not 100% certain it was on Wednesday, but I thought it was unlikely there would be another big match on the following week. So I gazed up to the top of the page and the date said 26th May. Yes, I have binned this weeks TVQuick and kept last weeks. D'oh. On the plus side, nothing much changes from one week to the next.
I then tried to find out what time The Dead Zone was actually on last night, just in case it was the same time as last week. Which was made slightly harder by me thinking it was on Channel 4 and looking on their website. And the Radio Times website kept trying to stop me doing anything by just generally being crap. The practical upshot is that I've missed the first twenty minutes - ie about half of it. Bugger.
I went to the new Waitrose today and decide they're not as crap as I first thought. They now have a free from section, pink grapefruit (ie red before they swapped the names) although bigger and twice the price), cheezely (although don't know if it's nice or nasty yet) and I managed to find decent carrots in there for the second time ever. So I am relatively) only relatively because their fresh fruit & veg are crap and their bread is tasteless. Although it was a bit surreal when I realised the other day that I have no idea where the milk is. Mind you, I can never remember where the bread lives because they've hidden it at the back of the shop - if you walk along the front you can't see it at all.
I also got ingredients to make myself pizza and garlic bread at the weekend. Which I'm looking forward to because I've really missed pizza.
I have two free tickets to The Allergy Show on 19th June in Olympia. I might work on trying to convince my mother to go, although I suspect she'll just complain about the train prices (and rightly, I have to admit) but does anyone want the other? I accept bribes in the form of dairy-free food.
The other day I watched a clip of Doctor Who in the eighties on the BBC Doctor Who site, which consisted of clips, info and half an hour of 80s music. Which was great! I was pretty much oblivious to the 80s the first time round but I love 80s music. And talking of 80s, for some reason I keep getting Sylvester McCoy and Tony Robinson mixed up. Having watched Doctor Who and Blackadder on the same day I don't know why but I've always done it. I have the sneaking suspicion that it's just me.
