My Turn to Make the Tea by Monica Dickens
I really enjoyed this account of life as a journalist in a small town in the 50s. It told me lots of things about journalism and how it worked, back in the days before computers. The characters are all so real. Half the good bits in it were about where she lodged, it was just so bad!
An Open Book by Monica Dickens
This is her autobiography. She's lived an interesting life. She was a debutante but had no interest in growing up and getting a husband, so instead got a job. Or quite a lot of jobs since she wasn't very good at them! It was a bit disappointing when I found out how much of My Turn to Make the Tea was fictional, though.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnnett
I did read this when I was younger but discovered I remember nothing of it. Which was probably because it's quite boring. In the whole book, pretty much nothing happens. It doesn't help that it contains improbable robins that think like humans and three kids that are obssessed by gardens, which is something that doesn't interest me at all.
The Head Girl of the Chalet School
Since I've read some after this talking about Grizel's time as head girl, reading this makes them make more sense. Or would if I could remember them. I'm starting to wonder if these are getting a bit samey but I'm enjoying them all the same. They really make me want to go to the Tyrol though
