Banging my head against a brick wall
Thursday 21st June 2007 7:07 pm

There's nothing quite like getting back off holiday to really make you feel good. But in my case I also had to cope with the following:

When I got home from work on 1st June I found I'd had a credit card statement in the post, which included £100 which wasn't mine. I only went home to change and pick up my suitcase, so dad ended up ringing up to get the payment stopped and pay the bill. The plan was they'd then cancel my card (they really wanted to, even it's only the one thing on there and that was at the start of May) when I got back, in case I needed to use it abroad.

When I got home I found my phone had developed a very loud dial tone and wasn't much use for anything else. When I rang BT they at least admitted there was a fault (the last time there was they tried to tell me there wasn't a fault) and they'd keep me informed as to how the fixing it was going. I got a text message a few minutes later to tell me it had been reported.

This was on Sunday morning. By Monday evening I wondered if anything was happening, so checked on the website - which took a while because they've moved everything again - and discovered it was due to be fixed on Tuesday. So when I got home from work on Tuesday I tried the phone and it was completely dead. I ended up getting dad to ring them because my mobile was running out of money and they admitted there was a fault and it would be fixed on Thursday.

Just after lunch on Wednesday the engineer called me to say he was at my house and needed to get in - despite them promising they'd have the engineer ring me half an hour beforehand. He fixed it quite quickly though - the one who had fixed the fault on Tuesday had decided to change my connection so it went to nowhere.

I put in an amazon order before I went away, as Robot came out the Monday before. Except they moved the release date to the Monday after I went away. But I didn't worry about it because they'd just take it to the delivery office and I'd pick it up at lunchtime. I went down there Monday lunchtime to find they'd now decided to close from 1pm-2pm. And when's my lunchtime? 1-2. They don't open till 9am and close at 5pm, and as I work 9-5.30 that's not helpful. I can't just nip out there in the day because it's a 15min walk away.

But, you can get it redelivered to another address. After ringing them and getting no answer (it was 4.57 at the time, which probably had something to do with it) I found you could do it online. For some reason they'd either tried to deliver it twice, or I have another parcel, although I'm not expecting anything else. So I filled in the long form twice and printed out the confirmation. That was due to be delivered today. Did it turn up? No, that would be asking too much, clearly.

Their website says it could turn up anytime before 6pm, so I didn't bother complaining because they'd only say wait till 6pm. So I'll have that to try and do tomorrow. Royal Mail only keep things for three weeks, so I'm fast approaching the point where they'll send it back to amazon, when I'll be really not happy with them. (When it does turn up I won't have time to watch it as Glastonbury starts tomorrow and when that finishes Wimbledon starts)
