SJA: Revenge of the Slitheen
Monday 24th September 2007 7:36 pm

I got home from work and watched both parts of Revenge of the Slitheen. I could have done without the CBBC logo in the middle of the screen though. I did switch over to the second episode and fast forwarded only to discover Lis Sladen being interviewed by a bloke and a cactus. Don't ask.

SPOILERS following:

I liked the bit ten minutes in when I stopped to put the dinner on and listen to the news, when Sarah's watching Maria and her dad together and trying to work out how they have that sort of relationship, when she doesn't with Luke. I think that might have been the best bit actually.

I can see why they used the Slitheen for the first proper episodes, because all the kids would be sat there going 'I know what they are' and 'I know how to beat them'. The trouble is, though, is if it hadn't been the Slitheen family Sarah wouldn't have known who they were. I did like them having a young Slitheen, though, you got more of an impression of them being a family and caring about each other.

It was obvious the power was going to go off just before Mr Smith told them what the Slitheen weakness was. They couldn't have telegraphed it better if they'd put up a big sign with it written on. I know it's aimed at kids but you still shouldn't be able to guess these things.

Maria definitely has the companion's role, since she's the one looking after Clyde and making friends. Sarah and Luke have the Doctor's role, with them solving the problems, and Sarah showing compassion to the young Slitheen. I'm a bit worried, though, that Luke and the sonic lipstick are going to solve all their problems. And that Mr Smith is the new sonic screwdriver. It probably depends on how much they make of Luke's social ineptness.

She mentioned the Brig! They have another eight episodes to mention Harry now, though. I so want him to turn up, no matter how impossible. I can just see Luke asking him, "Why do you call Sarah Jane 'old girl'?" and him not being able to answer that at all.

The main problem I had with it was it all seemed a bit quick. Hopefully, that won't be so bad next episodes because they don't have to re-introduce all the characters.

Next episode looks interesting, although I'm sure one of those nuns look familiar. Which will annoy me if I don't find out. There's something to be said for watching American TV where that doesn't happen (unless they're made in Canada, in which case I recognise them from being in Stargate).

Edit: Is it me, or does Alan not work? He's home when Maria gets home from school, then he's doing the gardening in the middle of the day.
