Funny songs
Monday 7th December 2009 9:16 pm

This would be me not working on Yuletide, but it’s all ISIHAC’s fault. They mentioned the rhyme, I remembered it from Brownies, I had to look it up and it all went downhill from there. There were various funny songs I remember from Brownies, usually based on another song, or just using the tune. Here are a selection:

Shine up your buttons!
(to the tune of My Bonny Lies Over the Ocean)
My father’s a lavatory cleaner
He works all day long in a pit (a pit!)
And when he comes home in the evening
He stinks out the house with the…

Shine up your buttons with Brasso
It’s only 3 ha’pence a tin (a tin!)
You can buy it or nick it from Woollies (Woolworths!)
But I doubt if they’ve got any in (any in..)

Some say that he died of a fever
Some say that he died of a fit (a fit!)
But I know what my old man died of
He died from the smell of the…

Shine up your buttons with Brasso
It’s only 3 ha’pence a tin (a tin!)
You can buy it or nick it from Woollies (Woolworths!)
But I doubt if they’ve got any in (any in..)

Some say he was buried in gravel
Some say he was buried in grit (in grit!)
But I know what my dad was buried in
He was buried in a field full of…

Shine up your buttons with Brasso
It’s only 3 ha’pence a tin (a tin!)
You can buy it or nick it from Woollies (Woolworths!)
But I doubt if they’ve got any in (any in..)

Some say that he left me a fortune
Some say that he left me a bit (a bit!)
But I know what my old man left me
He left me a great pile of…

Shine up your buttons with Brasso
It’s only 3 ha’pence a tin (a tin!)
You can buy it or nick it from Woollies (Woolworths!)
But I doubt if they’ve got any in (any in..)

I think we can all guess the word that the chorus is in place of. If you haven’t heard it sung, the chorus comes in very quickly after the last word of each verse.

Tarzan of the Apes
(to the tune of Battle Hymn of the Republic)
I like bananas, monkey nuts and grapes
I like bananas, monkey nuts and grapes
I like bananas, monkey nuts and grapes
And that’s why they call me
TARZAN OF THE APES

On Top of Spaghetti
(to the tune of On Top of Old Smoky)
On top of spagetti
All covered with cheese
I lost my poor meatball
When somebody sneezed

It rolled off the table
And onto the floor
And then my poor meatball
Rolled out of the door

It rolled in the garden
And under a bush
And then my poor meatball
Was nothing but mush

Oh, the mush was as tasty
As tasty could be
And early next summer
It grew into a tree

The tree was all covered
With beautiful moss
It grew lovely meatballs
And tomato sauce

So if you eat spaghetti
All covered with cheese
Hold on to your meatball
And don’t ever sneeze

You know what? I never realised ‘I like bananas’ was ‘Battle Hymn’ and I’ve sung Battle Hymn as itself, John Brown’s Body, He Jumped from 40k Feet and probably some other things. Ever sing ‘O You’ll Never Get to Heaven’ or ‘Three Blind Jellyfish’?

I’ve never sung those two, I don’t think. I didn’t realise what song Tarzan of the Apes was until I looked it up and even then I had to think about it – for some reason I remember that one so well (it probably helps that there are so few words) that I can’t quite associate the tune with anything else.
