Anniversary
Wednesday 23rd February 2011 6:48 pm
There are so many things I could talk about. Like how I haven't had the energy to write posts or reply to any. Or about the book sent to me called Chicks Dig Time Lords that I'll take to Redemption to pass on to someone else. Or how I'm off to Redemption this weekend. Which I'm looking forward to because it's in Coventry and it still feels like home (and I can go and see what the new union building looks like). But something bad happened for the last three Redemptions (last year I got labyrinthitis, the year before I discovered my car had been broken into, the year before I developed a lactose intolerance) so I can't help thinking something bad is going to happen in the next few days. Or about how I can't afford to buy a house, but can afford to rent somewhere bigger (with more space for books!). Or about how I'm halfway through writing the first draft of my Big Bang fic - I have 9000 words so far, so I should be able to make 25,000. Or about Nicholas Courtney dying, which is very sad.
But mostly, I feel that I ought to post today, of all days, because today is the two year anniversary of me being ill. Which is not really something to celebrate, but is something to mark.

Quiet weekend
Sunday 13th February 2011 8:32 pm
This weekend I have:
Written some more Big Bang scenes, so I am now just over a third of way through, in terms of scenes.
Played some more Lego Harry Potter so I am now just over a third of the way through in terms of percentage. In terms of levels I have 3 (out of 24) to go.
Caught up on Being Human.
So it was a restfully productive weekend.

Stargate and nostalgia
Friday 11th February 2011 8:44 pm
I got all nostalgic, going back to writing Stargate/Atlantis and re-read everything at langford_u which is an American university AU. I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time and I got all nostalgic about how much fun it was to read the fics and participate in that universe.
Reading through in order, I eventually came to the two I'd written. I was surprised to find they weren't as bad as I remembered. Which is either a good thing because it means I wasn't that bad five years ago. Or it's a bad thing because it means I haven't improved in five years.
But I did remember starting some other things. So I looked in my Stargate wip folder and found all sorts of things hiding in there. There's a langford_u fic that seems to be finished, so I'm trying to decide whether to polish it off (I reckon five years is probably enough to be my own beta) and post it, given that the last post on the comm was in 2007. But there are also some other little bits in there that might not take too much effort to finish off.
And there are half-started fics that I do have plot notes for that I could finish if I tried. And one file called "atlantis mckay". When I opened it I found it contained a few paragraphs of a fic starring Rodney McKay. I just have no idea where I was going with it...
That was just the Stargate folder I looked through. I might brave the other wip folders this weekend to see what gems are in there...

The saga of my tax disc holder
Wednesday 9th February 2011 9:49 pm
My car came with a tax disc and a round thing stuck to the dashboard, which it sat in. Which I only took any notice of once, when I had to change the tax disc. It did look like it was starting to come off the windscreen, and I thought I should probably do something about it, but that was as far as it got.
At Christmas, my car was last in the drive, so I ended up driving Dad up the road (and I needed to put petrol in it anyway). He remarked on the tax disc holder and I ended up buying a magnetic one in Asda. We then spent ages in the car park attempting to get it to stay on the windscreen with the tax disc in. The back stayed on perfectly happily if there was no tax disc inside it, but that's not really very helpful.
So I took it back, got my money back and Dad stuck the old one back on the windscreen. Where it stuck much better. So I made a mental note to buy a new one at some point, but while it was well stuck on, I'd leave it there.
It was fine until a couple of weeks ago when I heard a strange noise from the left side of the car. When I reached Tescos car park, which had lights, I discovered this was because the tax disc holder had fallen onto the dashboard. It was ten minutes after Halfords closed (of course). Tesco couldn't provide me with a tax disc holder, but Sainsburys could. And the original tax disc holder stayed on reasonably well until the next day anyway.
The next day, I took the old one off and put the new one on. Everything was fine until the day after, when I got to my car in the morning to find the tax disc holder on the floor. I took that one back to Sainsburys and got my money back and bought one from Halfords. Which has been fine. And cheaper than the other two...

Being constructive
Monday 7th February 2011 8:40 pm
I have achieved many things today.
I have written two (out of the thirty) scenes of my Big Bang fic. They're only 600 words each, but they are mostly dialogue, so they'll expand when I go back and add the description.
I have registered at the doctors. Only two years and a month and a bit after I moved...
And on Saturday I established that the hairdressers up the road is much cheaper than the one at work. They don't do appointments (which is good for someone like me who gets their hair cut when it gets annoying, however long that takes), so I will take a book up there next week and get it cut.
And I've done everything I intended to do this evening with an hour and twenty minutes to spare.

A lot of words
Sunday 6th February 2011 4:29 pm
After a week of doing not a lot except for a bit of work and watching a lot of Stargate and Quantum Leap (and not a lot of TV - I have now have three episodes of Taggart, two of Midsomer Murders and two of Being Human to watch), I am finally pretty much better. Better being a relative term.
Although I am really annoyed that as of Tuesday, the channel that showed Chuck and Leverage to those of us without Sky or cable, is now only for people who have Sky or cable. And I suspect the chances of either of those two programmes being on Freeview are small. So annoying. The stupid thing is it would be cheaper to buy them on DVD (never mind rent) than to get Sky just to watch 40 episodes. Or in my case, not quite get round to watching for ages.
On the positive side, this week I have been working on my Big Bang fic. I have 3000 words - of plot notes. But I found last time that if I write down exactly what's in each scene it makes it easier to write the scenes. And it's easier to move them around at the plotting stage than at the writing stage. Now that's done I have 30 scenes. I ought to start writing on Monday really. It's just that the first 13 are from Jack O'Neill's point of view and I've not written from his point of view before. Although I have now watched so much Stargate that every voice is starting to sound like him.
