Ficathons finished
Sunday 22nd July 2012 10:19 pm

Today I finished my [info]shipswap fic (well, sent it to beta) in time to not need to write anything during the Olympics. I have three ficathons on at the moment, one goes live this week and I have posted that fic. One goes live in August and that's in beta. Then the last one goes live at the end of August and now it's in beta too.

I nominated some ships in [info]rarepairfest (which is the same as [info]shipswap, but doesn't allow rare fandoms and has a deadline of beginning of September. If I hadn't finished my ship swap fic by the sign-up deadline, then I wouldn't sign up for this one. Having finished I then decided not to sign up. The two non-Big Bang ficathons I'm doing are anonymous and this one is too and I want to do something non-anonymous. And without a deadline. I have things I want to write and things I want to finish, so I'll work on those. And with the free time I have when I'm not writing to a deadline and there's not sport on, I can keep working on my Wii tennis and crocheting skills.

Chalet School slang
Thursday 19th July 2012 9:48 pm

I have just read a whole load of Chalet School books, but I have just reached the point where I can't take any more and have to stop for a bit.

I am amused by the slang in them. The school's always going on about not using slang. It's interesting to see how it changes from the first books where Joey's always saying 'topping' to the Swiss era I'm now reading where it's all 'smashing'.

I can see why those are slang. But then 'wizard' isn't. Nor is 'dekko' (Jack's the worst offender with this one, he never looks at/checks on anything, it's always having dekko). And 'demoted' is apparently slang, which is interesting - it seems like an obvious word for the opposite of promotion (except in football).

A state of ennui
Tuesday 17th July 2012 9:04 pm

I'm feeling like I can't be bothered to do anything at the moment. I don't know why it is, but I end up feeling guilty about not having done anything. Maybe it's because the Olympics are soon and everything will stop for that.

As of today I have open support requests on Livejournal and Dreamwidth. Both of which are bugs, I think, so could go unanswered a long time. For a while I thought about answering (or trying to answer) support requests, but when I read through the documentation about how to do it I realised it's like work, only I wasn't the person that programmed it, I can't look at the programming and even if I could I wouldn't be able to understand it. I don't need to do work-like things at home. The other day I typed a list and tried to put semi-colons at the end of every item on it...

I am going to see Legally Blonde tomorrow night, so perhaps that will snap me out of it a bit. I'll have to read the book afterwards because I don't remember now how it differed from the film.

I am going to join the local tennis club. I went last Saturday where I got taught how to do topspin foreheads (in theory anyway). My right arm still aches...

AU Big Bang betaing
Friday 13th July 2012 9:11 pm

My [info]au-bigbang is all done! Well, I have managed to get 90 words over the minimum word count of 15,000 and [info]hhertzof has betaed it and corrected my random use of commas and some other things. But I need one or two other people to have a look through it to check it makes sense.

It is an Doctor Who AU starting at the end of The Chase, with Ian and Barbara finding themselves back in London on the day they left. So it probably helps to have seen The Chase, or at least know why that makes it an AU. But I ideally need someone who hasn't seen Remembrance of the Daleks (a Seven and Ace story) or has seen it but doesn't remember any of it. And also someone who remembers it well. If such people exist. Posting is in August, so there's plenty of time yet.

It is also one of the few stories without an artist 🙁 So if you fancy getting to read it early without having to tell me if it makes sense (although I won't stop you if you want to do that) and you can make art, there's a claims post, which links you to the sign up post (you have to sign up before you can claim) and it also links to the FAQ. The FAQ says that you have to two two pieces of art, one of which can be an icon. It would be nice to have some art for it if anyone fancies it. Their final draft deadline is 5th August, but it doesn't have to be final until it's posted, sometime in August.

Wimbledon still my main topic of conversation
Tuesday 3rd July 2012 8:40 pm

After three late nights last week there's been rain this week and I don't know quite what to do with myself once play stops. I really won't know what to do with myself on Monday (unless the Men's Final ends up being played on Monday).

I am playing Fantasy Wimbledon. My ten female players were mostly chosen at random. They're now all out and are currently 543rd. But my men's team include Cilic and Querry, who had an epic match on Saturday that meant I only saw the last two sets of the late night Murray match because their last set lasted over two hours. As a result my men's team was 15th on Sunday:

Nic's fantasy tennis team

Nic's fantasy tennis team

Of course now I'm down to two men and 25th, but I'm pretty pleased with my halfway result. I'd claim I was some sort of master of the thing, but I think in reality, I got lucky.

I am off to Wimbledon on Thursday and am hoping they won't get through all the men's quarter-finals tomorrow because I'm not that interested in seeing the women's semis. But at least we're on Centre Court, so we are guaranteed play. And I have Friday off, so I can watch the men's semis (if they get that far by then).
