In June I'm doing a challenge to take a photo every day and at the end of the month I'll upload them all and post them here.

I have a couple of days of tennis and a few other ideas of things I can take photos of, which comes to about a week's worth... So does anyone have any suggestions of things they'd like me to take photos of?

Blake’s 7 Lucifer
Monday 27th May 2013 6:00 pm

When Big Finish announced that Paul Darrow was writing a book set after the last episode of Blake's 7 I couldn't work out what the fuss was about it. I could see the appeal, it was just the author I couldn't see the appeal of. I've been to Redemption, I've seen Man of Iron, I know what Paul Darrrow's writing is like.

Except I thought that maybe it's improved, after all he did write Man of Iron a long time ago. And I am intrigued to find out what he thinks happens after Blake. So I bought it.

It's taken me a week and a half to read it, not because it's long because I kept stopping to read other books. The trouble is, it's boring. Which shouldn't be a surprise. I think of Man of Iron as being funny (performed) but terrible. Whereas if you were to sit and read it on your own, it would be dull. And Lucifer is dull. Mind you, the first two books Big Finish published weren't that great (I refuse to buy any more), so why I trusted them I don't know. Worse, I read in the issue of Vortex that accompanied it, it's the first in a trilogy. I certainly won't be buying the rest.

The annoying thing is that because the difference between the ebook and real versions were only £2 (out of £15!) I bought the real version. So I have a) spent more money and b) when it turns up (I downloaded the ebook) I'll then have to get rid of it.

The word of the day is "ow".

This weekend being nice (for a change!) I thought I could get a lot of things trimmed in the garden and get rid of the massive weeds in the beds just outside by back gate. However, yesterday morning my washing machine decided it didn't like the pumping the water out idea. Which it has done once before because the previous people never cleaned the pump out, but I cleaned it a month ago.

It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that the washing machine is badly designed. Most other washing machines, you just stick an old ice cream tub under the pump and collect up all the water. But with mine you can't get the tub under the pump because there's a block of wood holding the washing machine up in the way. So I have to wedge it under there at an angle which means that you get barely any water out before you have to empty it and half the water still dribbles out under the washing machine onto the floor (well, towels I put on the floor). So that's quite hard work kneeling down for that length of time. But I managed to find some horrible dirty bits to clean and it was fine this morning.

After that my legs hurt - and trembled when I stood up at first. But then they seemed to be better, so I did a couple of hours of gardening in the afternoon. Which wore me out, but I had a restful evening and I was fine. Until I woke up this morning...

Today my left thumb really hurts (I was holding the ice cream tub with my left hand), my right hand hurts a bit (secateurs), the muscles in my lower arms ache a bit, my bum hurts (I don't know how you give the muscles in your bum a work out, but clearly I managed it) and worst of all the muscles at the front of my thighs hurt. And by hurt I don't just mean ache from working, I mean actual pain. I can't crouch, getting to the floor requires lowering myself down and up again, as does sitting and standing. Going up and down the stairs requires two hands. So today I am mostly saying "ow" and not therefore doing anything else in the garden.

Tomorrow I have to be well enough to clean the house. And tomorrow or Tuesday I have to defrost the fridge because I'm getting a new one. The current one is so loud I have to wear ear plugs to sleep through it, it never stops whirring and has made all the food in it practically unbearably cold. When my landlord comes over on Wednesday to deliver it it would be good if it was to a clean house...

For my [info]intoabar fic I am writing a Stargate and House of Anubis crossover, thus guaranteeing that no one will read it. But for research I watched an episode of Stargate on Pick TV* last night. And it reminded me just how much I liked it. It was a good episode, I checked before I watched it (Fragile Balance, aka the one with the young Jack O'Neill in). I liked the original team and the small episodes and the times when someone's eyes flash suddenly and you realise they're a Goa'uld. And watching it reminds me of the fun I had at Stargate conventions with a group of people I mostly lost touch with.

*I have no idea what Pick TV is all about, except that it shows Stargate every night

I am having a dizzy week - and for no reason too. Last week was a busy one at work, but then I had a three day weekend and all I really did during it was go and see Star Trek. It's annoying because I feel fine after an evening of lying on the sofa, but I should have been at ballet tonight. I could have done it, but I'd have come back feeling so much worse.

On the plus side, it's been a year since I was dizzy for no reason (although there was a time last summer when I was more dizzy than I would have expected - but at the very least it's been a good nine months). And I'm not so bad that I'm off work and I actually felt worse yesterday working from home. I hate working from home - the only time I like it is when I'm too dizzy to go in, so I'm clearly not that bad. Just enough to stop me from doing what I want to do.

Sunday 19th May 2013 8:15 pm

I finally saw the latest Bond film today. I didn't go and see it at the cinema because I couldn't be bothered to put the effort in. Plus everyone was saying how great it was and previous things people have raved about I've hated. And I didn't want to hate a Bond film.

I really liked the bit before the beginning credits - I was too busy watching it to crochet. And then it all went a bit downhill. It's hampered by Bond being played by Daniel Craig, which was a definitely downside in the last two films too. But also because they are obsessed with being dark and realistic. It just ended up feeling like a long episode of Spooks, only not as good. That's not what Bond is about. I want fast cars, women with silly names and bad guys wanting to take over the world.

In conclusion - it wasn't awful. But I'm glad I didn't see it at the cinema because I'd have been bored without trying to decide which colour to do next in my crochet to distract me.

Star Trek Into Darkness (spoilers)

Although I say spoilers, what I really mean is this post won't make any sense if you haven't seen the film. Read more...

Some actual writing
Tuesday 14th May 2013 9:34 pm

I managed to actually write something while procrastinating on my Not Prime Time fic. It's for [info]lost_spook's Obscure & British Comment Fest for the prompt Chalet School, Mary-Lou Trelawney, her first dig turns up something really unexpected.

More about the contents I can't say, but I read it over the weekend, didn't have time/energy to do anything with it, but I did have an idea. It was good to just write something short (it's about 650 words) without worrying about it. And I have reminded myself that I can do actual writing when I try, rather than worrying about not having an ending. Or a middle, in the case of my aforesaid Not Prime Time fic. Plus I wrote Chalet School, which is always a bonus.

(I am contemplating filling other prompts too...)

Where did the weekend go?
Monday 13th May 2013 7:55 pm

Last weekend was my one two day weekend in May (next week is my one five day week in May) and I had things I wanted to do that I never got to. Although it wasn't helped by spending most of Saturday morning doing work, most of Saturday playing with RSS readers, most of Saturday afternoon cleaning and Sunday I stood around holding a collecting bucket at the local classic car rally, which wore me out for the rest of the day.

Also, it's cold, which doesn't help. I'm currently being warmed by sitting on the sofa under a blanket with my warm laptop on my lap. And wearing two jumpers. But my hands are cold and it feels like too much effort to go out into the cold to get my fingerless gloves. It's really annoying that my lounge is currently the coldest room in the house (the warmest, albeit not by much) is the kitchen, even before I cook.

Smartphones and trains and books
Thursday 9th May 2013 7:46 pm

On Tuesday evening I had my first occasion when I was on my own and thought that a smartphone would be useful (on the other times I've been with someone who had one). I was coming back from the theatre and I'd got a lift there with my sister, as my house was between her work and the theatre. I realised before I'd even left the theatre that I'd forgotten my book. So I'd have nothing to read while waiting for the train or while on the train and being late at night everything was shut, so I couldn't buy anything to read, and it was dark so I could stare out of the window at the passing scenery.

Fortunately, I came across a stack of The Metro, so I got one and spent ten minutes establishing that there was nothing worth reading on it, and the other ten minutes of the journey deleting text messages from my phone, which I do rarely because I keep forgetting my mobile won't complain when I have 10 text messages. I've only had the phone for eight years and it's the second one I've had that lets you store more than 10 texts.

The other thing it would have been useful for was working out what time my train got in. I had to order a taxi in advance, as the cheapest (and also best) firm don't wait at the station, you have to order them. I thought I knew how long it took but not exactly enough. I had forgotten to bring a timetable with me or pick one up or look at the boards by the entrance. When I realised this I was about five minutes walk away and I had ten minutes until my train.

I passed a board with a load of QR codes for train timetables, but that doesn't help me much. But fortunately I had the phone number for National Rail Enquiries in my phone, so I called them and they could tell me the time the train got in.

So although I would have had two uses for a smartphone, in the end I found a way round and so can still conclude that I don't need one.

Weddings and birthdays
Monday 6th May 2013 5:17 pm

It was my birthday yesterday, but I didn't celebrate because I went to a wedding on Saturday... It wasn't as bad as I feared and it was good to catch up with people there I hadn't seen for years.

Yesterday I came home and opened my presents and watched Doctor Who. Diana Rigg and Rachael Stirling were both great, as was expected really, but made me want to watch The Avengers.

Present wise I got:

  • knickers (I've never bought my own knickers and I hate the idea of having to and Mum picks out good ones)
  • tea towels (enough to last 30 years at the rate I've been getting through tea towels)
  • mp3 player (which I actually got the week I was spring cleaning because that's when I needed it
  • giant piano keyboard (which is easier to play if you jump around, but does make your legs ache)
  • china rabbit

An updatey thing
Friday 3rd May 2013 8:30 pm

It's been quite nice not to have to update for the past two days when I haven't had much time to.

Earlier in the week I posted about this being a busy week work-wise. And then it wasn't. It was in fact quiet. Partly because the thing I thought was going to take half a day only took half an hour and partly because I thought everything was going to turn up at once on Wednesday, and not only did it not, but I got a head start on most of it on Tuesday.

And then there were the local elections. I couldn't decide who to vote for, so I left it until I was in the booth with a short, stubby pencil with my ballot paper to decide which box to put an x in. Then I spent the morning watching the results come in and discovered I made the right choice - there was just under 100 votes between the one I voted for and the Conservative. It was nice to feel like my vote counted because in the general election not even AR would have made a difference.
