I’ve Never Seen Star Wars October wrap-up
Tuesday 31st October 2017 9:46 pm

This month I've been using Netflix. Although it hasn't been for the whole month. The idea was to watch all of this set of Discovery episodes during the free month. Which meant that I've only actually had it for a week and a half.

So far I've watched Discovery and scrolled through some other stuff to see what was on there. It seemed to be mainly American stuff (didn't look to see if it was new episodes or all a series behind because it wasn't anything I was interested in), and old stuff. And some films, which surprised me - I thought Netflix only did TV. So for £6 (or more) it's pretty disappointing. I had to make an effort to find something else to watch because I felt that just watching Discovery wasn't enough of a test.

I half-like and half-dislike the fast forwarding. As you go it shows you screenshots, but there's no way of telling how far apart those screenshots are. I think fast forwarding and rewinding are at the same rate, which makes it hard to go back when you overshoot. But I can't tell. I'm used to my PVR where I can just press buttons to go forwards 1 minute and backwards 10 seconds.

It does keep track of what you've watched and how far into it you are. So you can get partway through something and then come back where you left off another time. And if you stopped at the end of an episode then when you go back it offers you the next one. It even works out that you've finished something if you stop at the beginning of the credits, which I was quite impressed by.

I set it up on my computer, added Discovery to "My list" so when I went into it on the TV, all I had to do is to select it, so that was easy.

So my experience was ok - it wasn't an amazing thing I have to have. It's useful that it's there for things that are only on Netflix (eg Discovery). I can understand why some people only have it and not a TV licence, given that they're very similar prices. But I definitely couldn't forego watching all the things I am currently watching on TV, the ease of watching from my PVR rather than Netflix, not to mention that you can't watch sport on Netflix!

I hate that I have to get it in order to watch Discovery. But at least it's available to watch - I don't have to have Sky for example, which is a lot more work and a lot more expensive.

All in all, I'd rate it a 5 out of 10.

The saga of the bathroom light
Sunday 29th October 2017 5:50 pm

Because nothing can ever be simple.

A while ago I changed all the lamp shades in the house. This is because everything was non-coloured (ie beige) and I wanted to add some colour. The bathroom had a beige that was pointed at the bottom and then tapered out, so as to collect the maximum amount of dust. At least I assume that's the only possible reason for having one of those. I climbed up on the bath, had a look at it, established there was so much dust that it looked like there was a normal bulb under it. And then decided I wasn't going near all that dust.

Thursday morning I turned the bathroom light on and it flickered. I thought "maybe if I turn it off, when I turn it on it'll have got over it and the bulb won't have gone." Unsurprisingly that didn't happen. Although it didn't trip the switch, which was something. It was dark at the time and there was not enough ambient light coming in from the landing.

But it was fine, I had a solution. I got the spare desk lamp from the spare room, took it out of the box and then there was plastic all over the floor. It turns out it didn't like being folded up in a box and the plastic covering the bendy bit had fallen off and fallen apart.

After I picked that all up I plugged it in to the plug socket handily just outside the bathroom door. I then had mood lighting in the bathroom. You really don't need mood lighting for going to the toilet.

Although it got light before I left for work, I didn't try changing the bulb. Because I'd woken up an hour and a quarter before my alarm went off, and I'd been going to bed late due to Missy playing late, I was tired and therefore dizzy. I can't climb ladders when dizzy. So I left it until I got home - except I left late and it was cloudy and it was surprisingly dark in the bathroom when I got home. Friday was no better, but I thought it was ok, I could last until the weekend.

Saturday morning I went for a flu jab. Which doesn't hurt going in, but afterwards it feels like someone's punched you in the arm. It hurts to touch it and it hurts to raise your arm. Which was perfect for changing light bulbs.

The lamp shade just required me to unscrew the pointy bit. I say just, but it took a good five minutes. So I was glad I didn't try that before or after work when I didn't have much time/light. There was about an inch thick of dust on the lamp shade, and some dead things. The bulb was so dusty it was a job to find its wattage (60W).

I went to my drawer of light bulbs, intending to stick something in temporarily. At which point I found that I have a lot of 100W bulbs (most of which I got free). I did manage to find a 60W bulb. I put that in and turned the light on and my bathroom is now so incredibly bright. All of a sudden it doesn't look dull and colourless, it looks bright and clean.

The saga doesn't end, of course. It has what looks like a normal light fitting, albeit much closer to the ceiling than in other rooms. I thought it would be easy to find something to go over it. But all the bathroom light shades seem to fit to the wall. I think I will be taking a photo of it to B&Q/Homebase to see if they have anything, and inevitably ending up buying something that I'll need to pay an electrician to fit.

Nothing is ever simple.

Femslash fic (and not posting)
Sunday 22nd October 2017 2:10 pm

I haven't posted for a while. This was mainly because Dreamwidth changing to https broke all the crossposting plugins. So it meant that I had to manually copy the posts from LJ, which was too much of a pain to be bothered with.

There are two plugins which are both based off an old one and haven't been updated for years. They still don't work with DW, but I am still using the same one to crosspost to LJ, so if you read there, you won't notice any difference. For DW I have a new plugin that crossposts to hundreds of places, but doesn't do any LJ/DW specific stuff. So if you're reading this on DW you'll see extra spaces between paragraphs. And if I use a more tag at any point you'll get even more spacing, rather than a cut tag.

I tried looking at both plugins to see if I could edit some things from one into another, but the new one is so long, because it does so much that Kate (KDE Linux equivalent of Notepad++) complained about it, and I decided I had better things to do with my time. For now, this is better than manually crossposting.

I wrote a fic for [info]femslashex:
Military Interference (2630 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005), Sarah Jane Adventures
Relationships: Kate Lethbridge-Stewart/Sarah Jane Smith
Summary: Sarah Jane and Kate have to save themselves from aliens and settle a score.

One of the things [info]selenay talked about was Sarah disliking military interference. So I decided the best place for Sarah and Kate to talk about it was in a cell on an alien spaceship heading away from Earth. And then I went "Shit! How do I get them out of this?" Which is generally how I write plot: get them into a mess and have no idea how to get them out of it.

Dear Yuletide Writer
Monday 2nd October 2017 10:47 am

Dear Yuletide Writer,

This letter is to give you some ideas, but if none of them are your thing feel free to disregard any of my prompts. I've put down some things I'd love to see, but there is so little fic in any of these fandoms that I'd be so happy to see anything at all in any of them.

For these fandoms my requested characters are Any. That's because I like all of the nominated characters and can't decide which of them and in which combinations I'd rather have. Feel free to write other characters in these fandoms too - there's none that I don't like.

Likes
- Stories that feel like a piece of canon
- Stories that make me laugh
- Stories that make me cry
- Stories that give me warm, fuzzy feelings
- Banter
- Friendship
- What If AUs
- Time travel/playing around with time
- Unusual formats (eg epistolary, IF, five things, etc) as well as the usual formats too
- For shippy things: meaningful touches

Dislikes
- Non-canonical (permanent) character death
- Anything that requires an adult rating (aside from language, if it's appropriate to the canon)
- Bodily fluids (unless it's for laughs)
- Any relationships not mentioned below
- AUs that change the setting
- For shippy things: power imbalance

The prompts: Read more...

I’ve Never Seen Star Wars – October
Sunday 1st October 2017 5:35 pm

As mentioned in an earlier post, this month I will be trying Netflix. It's a busy month to suddenly have access to a whole load of TV (potentially - obviously it's impossible to say how much until I actually sign up). So unless I get ill (which I'd really rather not), the only thing I'm likely to watch on it is Discovery.

I realised the good thing about there being a few episodes up before I start, is that I can then watch those in any order I like.
