Summary: The year of the long (for me) fic.

Last year I wrote three times as many fics. This year I wrote nearly 20,000 words more. I only have two that are more than a few words below 3000 words.

Specifics:

Best/worst title?
I still like Strictly Romance, unusual in that it had a title before I finished writing it.

Giselle's Honeymoon is just a very dull title and I should have put more effort into making it more Rocky like without going OTT.

Best/worst summary?
My summaries are pretty dull, it's hard to pick out one that isn't and one that's the dullest. The Unconventional Courtship one doesn't count.

I suppose It's just a simple divorce case, until it isn't. As usual for Randall and Hopkirk. (More Trouble Than They're Worth) is the only one that isn't just a basic description of the plot.

I think the worst might be After Frame of Mind Will Riker is learning what is real, Beverly Crusher is figuring out what her feelings for him are, both while debating a 22nd century play. (The Thing's The Play) because it could have just been so much more interesting.

Best first line?
I am quite fond of The door didn't open. Daisy knew it wouldn't because she'd heard the key being turned in the lock. (But For the Grace)

Best last line?
Alex grinned. "Perhaps, like Jason, I'll phone it in." He glanced over to the desk behind her. "Literally." (Willing to Walk Away). I had this line towards the end of my first first draft, but then it didn't fit into the revised first drafts and I was sad to have cut it. And then, after having decided I needed a dry remark from Alexander to finish the fic with, resurrected this line.

General questions:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
A lot less. I did have a big gap in the middle when it was just too hot to think/use a computer. I did write a lot more words than I thought - although I feel like the 25k fic I wrote shouldn't count as I wrote the first draft last year and just finished it off this year.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
Daisy Dalrymple I hadn't even hear of last year. And Randall & Hopkirk I hadn't seen last year. I also wouldn't have thought I'd write Galaxy Quest or Belinda Blinked.

What's your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Willing to Walk Away (Galaxy Quest), if only because I really enjoyed rewatching the film and it reminds me of how much I like it and the characters.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Willing to Walk Away (Galaxy Quest). Popular fandom, written for Yuletide always helps.

Story most underappreciated by the universe?
I tend to write rare stuff, so nothing's massively underappreciated in comparison to anything else. But I'm surprised that Runaway Colleague (Doctor Who) hasn't done better.

Story that could have been better?
Giselle's Honeymoon (Belinda Blinked). Writing like Rocky is hard - a lot harder than I thought it would be.

Sexiest story?
Usually I struggle with this, but it's easily You, Me, Red Wine, and the Edinburgh Night Sky (The Last Leg). Half the story consists of them trying to have sex with each other, but being too useless/hungover about it too manage.

Saddest story?
Runaway Colleague (Doctor Who) was probably the most angsty, but generally they were all pretty happy this year.

Most fun?
Giselle's Honeymoon (Belinda Blinked) if by fun you mean most ridiculous. This story actually has sex in it and isn't even a contender for sexiest story (much like the original).

Story with single sweetest moment?
Probably the ending of Runaway Colleague (Doctor Who) when Ian and Barbara are reunited.

Hardest story to write?
Willing to Walk Away (Galaxy Quest). I had four first drafts - my previous record is three.

Easiest/most fun story to write?
You, Me, Red Wine, and the Edinburgh Night Sky (The Last Leg). The title already told me a few things that were in the story. I kept writing a bit, then going away and thinking that what could keep them apart now and writing that. And repeating until it somehow ended up at 5500 words. That I wrote in a month.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?
I suppose Willing to Walk Away (Galaxy Quest) made me think about the characters more than I had before.

Most overdue story?
None!

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I took part in [info]fandom5k. I'd written 5k for Yuletide and 5k in a month earlier in the year, but that was still no guarantee I could write 5k for someone else on a deadline. But in the end I wrote 6k and enjoyed doing it (and the 5k fic I got in return).

This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most:
I think the overriding theme is how rare can I go and the answer to that is But For the Grace (Daisy Dalrymple). Although I am amazed it has 5 kudos and 1 comment - I was really only expecting one person to kudos or comment, and that was the person I wrote it for.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?
None! I'd like to get some of the (long for me) fic done, but mostly I have non-fic writing things I want to get done (programming languages and blog posting/commenting and blog sorting out and de-cluttering and catching up on TV). So I will get some writing done or not. But I would really like to do Remix next year, after missing it this year due to the heat. And Yuletide, as always.
