Sport and writing
Friday 28th July 2017 8:12 pm

It took me a little while to get used to the change from athletics from swimming, but now I'm loving the swimming. I still record it, partly because it starts before I finish work, but also because I'm not that interested in all the chat. Mostly I just like the swimming. And they repeat bits that they showed earlier/the previous day and I don't need to see it that many times. It's just a shame there's only two days of it left. Then I have to get used to athletics again, at the end of next week.

I had forgotten the Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth Games are both next year. Annoyingly, both on the other side of the world, although it does at least give me the evenings to catch up on the curling and other sports. The Winter Olympics is in February, Paralympics in March and Commonwealth Games in April. And then in May the tennis on TV season starts and before I know it it'll be summer and I won't have had time to watch any non-sports on TV for months.

It did occur to me that this year I haven't been to any live sports whatsoever. I haven't even been to the theatre or to see comedians. I thought about going to the last Saturday of Wimbledon, but the weather was crap. So that was probably a good decision, although there were spaces on court 3, where the wheelchair men's doubles was played. I thought about going to the Para-athletics last Saturday, but the weather forecast was for rain and I've done sitting watching sport in the rain and cold before and it's not fun. And as it happened I had to clean the house anyway. But London is bidding to have the World Para-athletics championships back in two years, so I can go then. And the Commonwealth Games is bound to come back to this country sooner or later.

I did manage to squeeze some fic writing in. After a Twitter conversation about ships with the Thirteenth Doctor, I wrote a Thirteen/Missy (very short) fic:
The Love of an Enemy (334 words) by paranoidangelDoctor Who (2005)
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Thirteenth Doctor/Missy
Summary: Missy needs a friend. Spoilers for The Doctor Falls.

And last week's Last Leg made me want to write more Josh/Jonnie, so I did:
Bromance, Showmance (594 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: The Last Leg RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Josh Widdicombe/Jonnie Peacock
Summary: Jonnie confronts Josh about his bromances.

This is going to be one of my Yuletide fandoms this year (again). But when I posted this the Josh/Jonnie relationship tag didn't come up. So I found one of my Yuletide fics and discovered that's because there were only three fics with that relationship and I wrote all of them for Yuletide last year.

Never Seen Star Wars and Not Prime Time
Saturday 15th July 2017 11:44 am

For the past nearly-two weeks my life has been all about the tennis. And I could write loads about it here, but I won't, because I have a couple of other things to write about, and because most people probably don't want to know quite that much detail. But I am writing this while watching the wheelchair men's doubles final.

I've Never Seen Star Wars
Last week I worked out what I was doing for July, since I could fit it around the tennis, I just hadn't got around to posting it, for tennis reasons. I am re-learning French, using Duolingo and other apps. I did five years of it at school and I was generally not that great, I was in the bottom set (of two) for GCSE and then somehow I came out with an A and wanted to do more of it. So I did French for Scientists at uni, which was two hours a week for 25 weeks.

I know an awful lot of people use/have used Duolingo, but I also have Memrise and Lingvist on my iPod, that have been sitting there doing nothing. So I am using all three and at the end of the month I will report back.

Not Prime Time
I'm glad I didn't sign up for this, as it went live earlier this week and authors have been revealed and I haven't fitted in reading any of it in between. But I did write for it:
Leading Lady (1621 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Beverly Crusher/William Riker
Characters: Beverly Crusher, William Riker, Deanna Troi
Additional Tags: Acting, Theatre, Kissing
Summary: Beverly is having regrets about playing the leading role opposite Will.

When browsing through the requests I came across the Riker/Crusher one and I didn't care much for it. But I read the prompt because I was curious and resistate made a great case for them deserving friends with benefits. So much so that I really wanted to write it. I was going to write it for a treat, but wasn't sure how to make me do it - but then it came up as a pinch hit right after assignments going out and I snapped it up. I really enjoyed writing these two so much that I want to write them again (along with all the other things I want to write, and Unconventional Courtship that I need to write after Wimbledon and the Para-athletics are over).

Fic what I wrote (DW spoilers)
Sunday 2nd July 2017 3:17 pm

(I haven't posted a Never Seen Star Wars post for July yet because everything stops for Wimbledon. I'll post one in a fortnight.)

I wrote some fic! I started a Librarians fic a while ago because I realised that I wanted to write more Flynn and Cassandra friendship. And because I have post-ep fics for two other season 3 episodes, I clearly needed another one. And then last night's Doctor Who prompted me to write a fic related to it.

There are spoilers for The Librarians 308 And the Eternal Question, and last night's Doctor who below. Read more...

Things
Thursday 22nd June 2017 5:30 pm

It's been hot the past few days, so if I hadn't needed to do anything during that time, I didn't do it. If I was in, I just read or caught up on TV and was hot. As was Missy - hamsters don't do well if it's too hot and they don't like the humidity either. But she's enjoyed frozen peas and frozen carrots and she's been outside. Because it's been so hot I've had the back door open while she's out playing, so of course she went out onto the doorstep and then fell off. After a few times falling off she was happy about where she was and tried to wander off. At one point she found a pebble and decided she wanted it.

Monday I had one of my (on average) two days a year when I wished my car had air conditioning. I did some stargazing from my back door, where I was sat because it was cooler and I could keep an eye on Missy escaping. Not that I could see many stars because even by the time I went to bed late it still wasn't properly dark.

Now, though, the weather is much better, I have a couple of days off work and I am catching up on things.

Tennis is crazy. Queens sometimes has those years when all the seeds go out in the first couple of rounds, so we were probably overdue one. But I feel like the third, second and first seeds all going out one after the other must be some sort of record. And a whole load withdrew due to injuries. But it'll be interesting to get a winner outside of the usual suspects - although a few former champions are still in the draw.

Unconventional Courtship is on again. I spent some time at the weekend with the Generator and ended up signing up with this summary:
310) Night of the Living Wed by Michele Hauf
Dayna Mellanby and Del Tarrant's evening turns deadly when some uninvited guests show up at their friend's party — a horde of hungry zombies. The couple is in a fight for their lives when a new, heroic side of Tarrant emerges, and he vows to protect Dayna no matter the cost….

Obviously explosions will follow. I will probably change the zombies, but I went with this one because it was just so perfect for them. And will be different to what I've written for it before.

Missy and Writing
Monday 12th June 2017 8:40 pm

Did you know, that in the middle of the planks of laminate flooring is wool-like wood? Neither did I, until Missy half-demolished the one by the back door. She thinks it'll get her out of the back door. Occasionally she tries chewing the door too, but since it's plastic she doesn't get very far with it.It's the reason why my back door mat has a corner taken out of it. And why she's now working on the opposite corner, since I turned it around. The trouble is that she thinks anything put in her way is just a challenge to be overcome…

She's also gone off the cornflake-like pieces in her food. They used to be her favourite. With the other bits she's not keen on, she just leaves them in her food store and eats the bits she likes best first. Which seems to include bits of sweetcorn - I keep finding half-eaten bits of it buried everywhere. But with the cornflakes, she leaves them in her food bowl. Until yesterday, she was taking them off me, if I offered one to her. But yesterday I gave her one, she took it, thought about it, then dropped it.

She has yet to learn that just because she wants something, doesn't mean she'll get it.

I've been reading some Chalet School books recently, which I will post about on Wednesday. They really made me want to get back to Lynda Day at the CS. Although the trouble with that is I know how it starts, I just don't know how it goes on from there (aside from not what I wrote in the first draft).

For Unconventional Courtship I really wanted to write a pairing from a different fandom every time I did it. I was thinking of writing Harry/Ruth next because a bit of undercover stuff could fit well with a summary. But there's been a few things recently that have made me want to write Tarrant/Dayna, despite having written Tarrant/Servalan/Avon for the first Unconventional Courtship. I think the trouble is that Tarrant/Dayna fit the ridiculousness of the whole thing well.

What all this thinking about writing means is that I'm too busy for writing. But more awake and less dizzy than I was. We'll see how long it lasts.

All change
Sunday 7th May 2017 6:05 pm

This week has not been what I expected at all.

First, I'm now going to Rock Choir this term. This is because ballet was cancelled for the term (long story), so I thought I'd replace it with Rock Choir. Whether I carry on after this term depends on what happens with choir, because I'd like to only go out two nights a week and having them both be choirs is a bit much. But I enjoyed this week more than last week. Partly because I knew what to expect, but I also ended up sitting at the back, rather than the front, which was a different experience. And it was less repetitive since we went over the song we learnt most of last week, then learnt the bits we'd skipped, which were the hard bits.

Then this weekend I bought a new computer. I was planning to because mine is very slow. There are websites, which if I want to visit them, I open them up, then go away and do something else while they load, it's that slow. But I was planning on getting it after Wimbledon, when things stop for summer. But I randomly checked on the one I wanted and it was a third off, so I got it. I am, in fact, typing this on it. Although in a terrible Firefox because I haven't copied over my settings yet, and the resolution on this computer means I keep having to zoom into websites. And that's after I dropped the resolution - it was originally 3200x1600 and I needed a magnifying glass to see anything.

And I had to install Linux twice because 500GB and 500MB are very hard to tell apart when it's written in bytes.

But those websites that took so long on my old computer open instantly on this one. Mind you, I don't have any add-ons in Firefox yet, slowing it down...

And then, for the first time ever, I picked up a pinch hit for Not Prime Time. I'd read been reading through the requests while sign ups for open and there were a few I liked the idea of writing for, one in particular I really wanted to write. The trouble with not having a deadline is that I don't prioritise writing and instead do the other 1001 things I need to do. So as much as I wanted to write a treat I knew it probably wasn't going to happen. But there wasn't anything I really wanted to receive. So I was very excited when I found the request I really liked was a pinch hit. It was the first time I've ever put in for one and now it's all mine!

I have some ideas, they're just percolating before I write it. The deadline I don't need to write down because it's the start of Wimbledon...

Actual writing
Wednesday 12th April 2017 9:17 pm

I have written something that's not for a ficathon or a fest or any sort of deadline! Well, I say written, I have finished something. Two things in fact - I started them both shortly after the Spooks film came out. One was nearly finished, one was so finished I just fixed a couple of typos and declared it done.

It's good to a) finish something on my length WIP list and b) write in a fandom I haven't written in for a while. And as a by-product I realised I had, without noticing, now got a diagonal line on my Gen Prompt Bingo card. Or I will, once I find something to fit in the wild card. And then I can get another card for the latest round, that will hopefully help me finish some other WIPs.

I did choose these two because they were the closest to being finished, for the sense of accomplishment. I do now feel accomplished - let's hope that continues on to help me finish some of the other things on my list.

The Better Bad (1156 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Spooks | MI-5
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Dimitri Levendis, Erin Watts, Harry Pearce
Additional Tags: Post-The Greater Good
Summary: The reason why Dimitri wasn't in The Greater Good. Spoilers for The Greater Good.

Undercover Relationship (1256 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Spooks | MI-5
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Dimitri Levendis/Erin Watts
Characters: Dimitri Levendis, Erin Watts
Additional Tags: Undercover
Summary: Dimitri and Erin attempt to have a relationship, but being in MI-5 doesn't make it easy.

Het Swap
Saturday 18th March 2017 11:54 am

Het Swap authors were revealed on Wednesday and this is the first chance I've had to talk about it since then. The whole ficathon has been kind of hilarious, in ways that will shortly become clear. Read more...

Chocolate Box
Tuesday 21st February 2017 6:58 pm

Reveals have happened so I can talk about Chocolate Box! Well, most of it I could have talked about before, but just didn't have the time anyway.

Interestingly, it felt like most people responded to comments before reveals, so I have no idea who wrote anything. I left mine until reveals because it just feels odd to me to reply to comments when no one knows who I am.

I did comment on everything I read and liked and did manage to come up with more than just "I liked it" although I found it hard with short fics.

Busy
Sunday 12th February 2017 3:17 pm

This week has been busy. I had one of those weeks where I was out Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Monday I went food shopping and Wednesday I played with Missy until I was struggling to keep my eyes closed. So Friday I watched TV and played with Missy and that was pretty much all I had the energy for.

I have three more of those weeks between now and Easter. But this week is half term, so I have nothing at all on any evening.

An I have my hetswap fic to write. I started late because I had Chocolate Box treats to finish. I now have three first drafts of my hetswap fic - I hope the third time is the charm because if I don't get it finished this week I'll be back to having no time to do it in.

And after that, no more exchanges for a bit. I want to be able to write for myself, talk about what I'm writing and not have to have this unbreakable deadline. And work on my WIPs. I have signed up for the Doctor Who Minor Characters Ficathon, but I am writing one of my WIPs for it and it's not the end of the world if I miss the deadline - as evidence by last year when I finished my fic about six months after the deadline.

Fic WIPs
Sunday 5th February 2017 7:03 pm

I have a whole load of half-started fics around the place, so I am hoping that [info]onedeadplotbunny might help with that. So here's a list of my WIPs:

  • 40-Love year later
  • The Librarian: Charlene fic
  • Doctor Who: Harry and Sarah and Martha
  • Hunting Venus fic
  • Doctor Who: Tenth Doctor and John Chesterton
  • Lynda Day at the Chalet School
  • SGA: Elizabeth/Ronon
  • Doctor Who: SJA & UNIT
  • Spooks: Where's Dimitri in The Greater Good
  • Spooks: Dimitri and Erin
  • Doctor Who: The Adventures of Missy and Clara
  • The Librarian(s): Charlene's cats
  • TPM denial fic
  • Enterprise: Trip & T'Pol post-Terra Prime
  • Ugly Betty fic
  • Wizards vs Aliens: Michael's dog
  • Wizards vs Aliens: Tom's sister

Some of those are more likely to happen than others. Some of them I don't even remember what they're about. I opened one, skim-read what I'd written and I have no idea where I was going with it.

Tennis and other things
Sunday 29th January 2017 4:03 pm

I am sad that the Australian Open is now over. It was good, although people had a tendency to interrupt at work on matchpoint. At least this morning's final was uninterrupted. If only because I didn't get dressed until after it was over - it was just too exciting to miss! It was good to see Roger vs Rafa again and I wish they could both have won.

Next weekend is the Davis Cup, but it's annoyingly in Ottawa, which means it'll be in the evening and night. If it goes to a fifth rubber staying awake will be hard.

I really want to go to Wimbledon. It's been years since we got anything in the ballot - if we don't get anything this year we might just go and queue on a quiet day.

I should be spending some of the weekend writing or catching up on TV. I haven't been doing very well on that, but I have done a lot of random surfing and YouTube video watching. Which weren't really on my to do list...

My Chocolate Box fic is finished and in beta. I uploaded it then couldn't think of a title, so it's still in draft format on AO3. I have some treats I have ideas and bits of fic for, I just need to get round to writing them.

For Het Swap there are two people I can write for. I have bits of ideas for both of them, so hopefully I can make one of them into a whole idea, whichever one I end up getting assigned to.

Dear Het Swap Writer
Tuesday 24th January 2017 9:25 pm

Dear Het Swap writer,

Thank you for writing a story for me. I've tried to give you some ideas of what I might like to see, but if none of them are your thing feel free to disregard them. They are just ideas for people who find it easier to write something when given a prompt. Feel free to write other characters in these fandoms too - I like all the other characters in these fandoms. Just because I've waffled more or written more prompts about some fandoms than others doesn't mean I want it more - I want these all as much as each other, I just waffle more about some than others.

General things I like:
- Stories that explore the relationships between characters
- Stories that explore characters
- Scenes/fic that is like it could be (part of) an episode
- Stories that make me happy or make me laugh or make me cry
- Fun stuff that leaves me feeling happy
- A touch being more sexy/touching than a whole sex scene
- Complicated relationships
- Epistolary fic

General things I dislike:
- Sex scenes, so nothing over PG-13 please - generally sticking to the tone and details of sex/humour/peril etc of the original is good.
- British people using Americanisms and American people using Briticisms
- Non canon (permanent) character death

For reference, here are my prompts: Read more...

Five Things
Sunday 8th January 2017 5:27 pm

1. I finally got round to seeing which Gen Prompt Bingo squares my Yuletide fics might fit on. And I now have four lines with three squares filled. You think it would be easy to get a line from there...

2. Looking through the Chocolate Box requests I found a person who has loads of the same fandoms (and likes the same relationships) as me. I sort of hope I get matched to them, but also sort of not because how will I decide which to write? Chocolate Box is a min 300 word exchange based on relationships - but unlike Public Call it splits them into gen and ship. If anyone wants to write treats the requests are at http://archiveofourown.org/collections/chocolatebox2017/requests

3. After [info]lost_spook mentioned it, I have now watched all four episodes of Timeless that are on Channel 4's catchup. I like it so far but it feels a bit formulaic. So, for example, my favourite character is Wyatt (despite hating his name) because he's a good looking hero who's been hurt emotionally. Which makes me feel like I'm being emotionally manipulated into liking him because of this past hurt. I want to dislike it because of this, but I don't.

4. I have so many Big Finish audios to listen to at the moment. November and December were months with a lot of good releases. I saved The Avengers (Steed & Peel vol 2) for Christmas and I loved it. I like how silly they make it. I know they were based on old comics and they've done them all now, but I am hoping they'll do some more anyway.

I'm onto Counter Measures now which I love. At least now they've back to doing individual stories again. I only got into these audios because they brought the first one out as I was writing a story where Ian and Barbara land just after they left, rather than in 1965, and get caught up in the events of Remembrance of the Daleks. I'm glad I did - they might be my favourite Big Finish audios.

I also have the latest UNIT box set, which will be tough straight after Counter Measures. Much as I love Kate, I love Rachel more. Plus I don't care that much about the other UNIT characters (even Oswald - I don't like her nearly as much as the rest of fandom does).

5. So far all the Fandom Snowflake things have been repeats from previous years, so I haven't been that excited about doing it yet. I may change my mind, but going back to work last week was just so hard (but it got easier to wake up before dawn as the week went on). I usually go back to work on the first working day of the year because no one wants to work. And this year we spent most of the day chatting and talking about how unmotivated we are were. By day 2 anyone who's had an extra day off gets no sympathy.

Dear Chocolate Box Writer

Yuletide
Sunday 1st January 2017 12:24 pm

For Yuletide I got another fic by Selenay (which I never guessed was her at all). The first 40-Love fic I've received!

Revelation in Three Acts (3715 words) by Selenay
Fandom: Cornetto "40 - love" Commercial
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Debbie/Maria Fernandez
Characters: Debbie (Cornetto "40 - love" Commercial), Maria Fernandez, Original Female Character(s)
Summary: There are certain promotional appearances Maria has never been able to say no to, but it takes a conversation with a stranger to understand why.

And then I wrote 8 stories - outside of Yuletide I only wrote 7 stories, and one of those was written at the same time. So it was a very productive time all of a sudden!

The Public Call fic I wrote
Thursday 15th December 2016 9:11 pm

I was starting to think it would be the last one revealed! But I wrote:
Tea and Biscuits (1225 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Eleventh Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Sky Smith
Summary: Sarah Jane had seen the Doctor a few times since he dropped her off in Aberdeen. All by chance and none when he knocked at her front door. Until now.

When I signed up for some reason Eleven/Sarah was one of the relationships I didn't offer. I couldn't think why but never got round to adding it. Helpfully, though, getting [info]dbskyler meant I could write any of the requests and it was this one that gave me an idea of what to write. I actually wrote it during my very productive period while off work (on 'holiday' and ill) and got it done within about a week of getting my assignment.

Things
Sunday 20th November 2016 4:29 pm

On Wednesday I sneezed and made my pulled muscle worse. And then on Friday it was suddenly so much better. At first I thought switching from paracetamol to ibuprofen had made the difference, but then it never got more painful after that.

I have had a busy weekend, getting lots of things done. I learnt that hoovering with my left hand hurts just as much as hoovering with my right, but hoovering with both was better. I went to the pet shop and wanted to take all the rabbits home. Especially one that came to see me when I spoke to them, and then licked the glass.

I bought Missy a toy that hangs up and has wooden things on it. It's the sort of wood she likes chewing, but she's spent most of her time with it on the string - she doesn't like hanging things, she always takes them down. It's safety pinned to the sofa, so it'll take her a little while as she can't spend the whole night working on it.

I got my Public Call fic done, which was just as well given that the deadline is this evening. I've also finished my Yuletide fic, for a given value of finished, given that I keep tinkering with it.

And I've started rewatching The West Wing. Since my pulled muscle means it hurts to laugh I had to find something that wasn't funny. And since I've been watching a lot of funny stuff on catch up, I keep using up my internet, so it had to be something I didn't need to stream. I've been wanting to rewatch The West Wing since I introduced my parents to it a few years ago and then caught an episode when I was home one weekend. I keep racing through it, partly because there's not a lot on at the moment, partly because I want to get to the bits I vaguely remember, but don't know when they are (and I am avoiding episode guides because I don't want to know in advance).

It was only after I started that I looked at my DVDs and thought that I should have considered The Bill - I have quite a few DVDs of half hour episodes from the 80s that I haven't watched. Or The Avengers - I have all the Emma Peel episodes and I've seen all the ones 'in color' but I can't remember which black & white ones I've seen. But now I've started The West Wing, I'll finish it first.

Of course this week has been tennis. I am disappointed that they won't show the doubles (of course) or the evening matches, and that Jamie and Bruno got knocked out in the semi-finals. But it is exciting that they're the number one doubles team this year. And Andy is the number one singles player this year. There's just the match in a couple of hours to decide who ends up number one in the rankings. I am hoping for a Murray victory of course, but I'd like either a decisive Murray win or a very close match with either winning. And come February there'll be another round of Murray vs Raonic when we play Canada (away) in the Davis Cup.

Mostly about Femslash
Sunday 6th November 2016 4:05 pm

This week has been a busy week - I was out four nights in a row. Work was frustrating and having just had half term where I had nothing on any evening, it was good to get out and do something else. I had very little that I needed to get done this weekend, so I have been doing it today - yesterday I did pretty much nothing at all. It was nice for a change.

[info]femslashex all happened this week. I've been wanting to try it once and this year it was nicely timed and I just about managed to find the minimum number of offers and requests.

I got this lovely Sarah/Kate fic from [info]selenay:
The Clean Up Date (2830 words) by Selenay
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005), Sarah Jane Adventures
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Kate Lethbridge-Stewart/Sarah Jane Smith
Summary: “It’s whatever you want it to be,” Kate said quietly, her usual note of mild amusement absent. “It can just be dinner, if you want.”

I wrote this Missy/Clara fic:
Double Desolation (2281 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Missy/Clara Oswald
Summary: Clara has dinner with Missy. Of course Missy has an ulterior motive, Clara just has to find out what it is.

It was a bit strange to write as every time I put "Missy" I think she's my hamster. Who is not too dissimilar from the character. There was a point in the betaing when Sel wrote something along the lines of "that's just like Missy" and I thought "It is just like Missy", and then realised Sel was talking about the fictional character, not my hamster.
