End of year fandom meme
Friday 29th December 2017 3:06 pm

1. Your main fandom of the year?
In terms of fic writing and reading it's probably been Doctor Who. I don't tend to talk about it much because I find it's best enjoyed without thinking about it much.

2. Your favourite film watched this year?
I watched two films this year, Rogue One and Kinsgman. So my favourite is therefore the one I liked: Kingsman.

3. Your favourite book read this year?
Looking back, I really didn't write a lot of Reading Wednesday books this year, so I can't remember most of what I read. It's probably a tie between Carry On by Rainbow Rowell and Knowing the Score: My Family and Our Tennis Story by Judy Murray.

4. Your favourite TV show of the year?
Red Dwarf XII. Which is just as well because when I did this meme last year I put it down as my biggest fan anticipation.

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year?
The only ones I use are LJ and DW, so those.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Carry On, given the speed I got through the book. Although there's so much fic there I don't know where to start (so I haven't yet, but will when there's less Christmas exchange reading to do).

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Star Trek: Discovery. It got better when there weren't Klingons on it, but I can't stand Michael and it turns out she's the main character (I thought we were well rid of her after the first two episodes).

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Probably Jonnie Peacock.

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Diana Rigg, for her performance in Victoria.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Diana Rigg in Victoria. I either hadn't known she was in it or had forgotten, so I was pleasantly surprised when I finally got round to watching the latest series this month.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Exactly the same answer as last year: Stargate Atlantis, caused by reading SGA Secret Santa fics (particularly the Shep/McKay ones).

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Given the rate I keep acquiring them, I don't need any more.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
I'm excited about the Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, despite the time difference. And hoping Jo Konta does better this year (overall, not just at Wimbledon). I can't think of any answers that are non-sport ones!

End of year fandom meme
Thursday 22nd December 2016 6:58 pm

1. Your main fandom of the year?
I couldn't decide how to count this, so I looked back through my blog and I talked about Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Star Trek, The Bill, The Avengers, The Guild and Star Wars.

2. Your favourite film watched this year?
The only films I've seen this year have been Star Trek, Fantastic Beasts and Finding Dory. I liked them all pretty equally, but if you were to hold a sword to my neck and force me to choose, I'd go for Finding Dory.

3. Your favourite book read this year?
I looked back through my Reading Wednesday posts and there's nothing that particularly stands out.

4. Your favourite TV show of the year?
Red Dwarf XI. "He shouts formica and invents gravy." Can't be beaten.

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year?
LJ and DW, being my only online fandom communities.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
The Guild and Green Gables Fables. I rattled through both of those pretty quick.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Maybe the news that the new Star Trek TV series is going to be on Netflix. Or no Graeme Garden on ISIHAC.

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year?
I suppose the man that was on my TV that I was most excited about was Tosh Lines.

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Felicia Day.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Charlene being back in The Librarians.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Reading SGA Santa fics has made me miss Stargate Atlantis. Watching late 1980s The Bill makes me miss that it's not on anymore.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I think I have quite enough to be going on with, thank you.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Red Dwarf XII. Although that won't be until autumn, so that's more my fan anticipation for next year. For New Year it's more Charlene on The Librarians, as I'm assuming/hoping she'll be back at the end of the season (I am happily unspoilered).

One letter, six questions meme
Wednesday 13th April 2016 7:00 pm

[info]lost_spook gave me an E. Which seemed like it should be an easy letter...

Something I hate: Ear (inner). Specifically mine. Due to a case of not working properly. Or in other words, I've spent days trying to think of something I hate beginning with E and will only come up with something better the day after I post this.

Something I love: Earrings. It's not earrings I love, but silly earrings. Especially ones that are a pair, but aren't both the same. Those are my favourites. I have a fish and a hook, a man running and dinosaur, the front and back of a rabbit and various musical notes. They're an excuse to wear something small and fun.

Somewhere I've been: Eastern Europe. Not the whole of it, but enough bits to know I like it. It's pretty and the people are lovely. And mostly it's just really pretty. I'd like to go back and do other bits of it, but I didn't want to put the same answer for both questions.

Somewhere I'd like to go: The Enterprise. The original (NCC-1701) mostly, but any of them will do in a pinch. As long as the inertial dampeners are working so I can't feel we're moving, then I'll be fine.

Someone I know: Emma. Not one specific Emma, there are a lot of Emmas. It was a very common name around the time I was born, so I know quite a few Emmas.

A film I like: Ewan McGregor films. Well, not all of them. For one thing I am behind on my Ewan McGregor film watching, but also because some of the ones he's been in are shite. Looking at his imdb list there's more in there I don't like than do. But there are some I love: Moulin Rouge, Down With Love, all the bits of Star Wars he was in (the only important bits of Star Wars are the bits he was in).

If you want a letter, then ask and ye shall receive.

WIP meme
Friday 30th January 2015 5:38 pm

When you see this, share 3 lines from each of 3 WIPs.

Technically speaking I saw this a week ago, but I didn't have 3 WIPs then. Now I do! They are all first drafts, though, so a bit terrible and when I come to do the rewrite and editing stages these bits may not survive. I am taking the '3 lines' part liberally.

Lynda Day at the Chalet School
Lynda shrugged. "I have an important question to ask you."

Miss Bettany looked almost amused at that, but found an empty classroom and perched on the edge of the teacher's table, waiting. She didn't have to wait long.

"Why is Sarah editor of the Chaletian?"

"So that's what this is about." Miss Bettany's eyes twinkled. "Why does it matter?"

"Because I wanted to do it."

The Librarians sword fighting fic
"I see you fight with the traditional [something] technique," Flynn said, his blade moving wildly, yet somehow always seeming to be in the right place when he needed it to be.

"It's working very well," Jenkins said calmly.

"But you're not beating me." Flynn was gradually pushing Jenkins backwards.

"But I am expending less energy. How long can you keep this up?"

Sarah & Harry fic for [info]onlyonebed
"I'll sleep on the floor." He wouldn't able to stretch out, but it wouldn't be too bad if there was an extra blanket in that wardrobe.

"There's not enough room," Sarah protested.

And, it turned out, no extra blankets, when Harry looked.

"Look on the bright side," Sarah said. "Maybe we'll be attacked before bedtime."

December Talking Meme – Chalet School
Thursday 29th January 2015 5:30 pm

Chalet School was my most requested topic. And had the questions that required the most thought, so I left it till last, so I could think about it. Which meant that I started thinking about it when I started writing this.

Despite reading some boarding school stories as a child and loving them, I never came across the Chalet School. I didn't discover it at all until a few years ago when I decided to re-read some children's books I'd liked as a child. Someone mentioned Chalet School (probably [info]hhertzof). I went into one of the charity shops in town that had a room full of books and found an omnibus of the first two for 25p.

I then ended up reading the rest of the series from a combination of cheap paperbacks I bought, paperbacks and hardbacks borrowed from [info]selenay (who rudely moved to Canada when I still had one to go - I had to go out there in order to read it) and transcriptions. I've since read some of the ones written by other people and published by Girls Gone By.

It is infinitely crossover-able. Any female character who could have been around during the second half of the 20th century could have been a pupil there or taught there. Male characters are more tricky because they didn't have many male teachers and most of the men in the series were doctors at the San.

December Talking Meme – Choir
Tuesday 20th January 2015 6:00 pm

[info]tanaqui asked about choir. The one I go to started around ten years ago, I think. I found out about it because my landlady went, but at the time I had fencing on a Thursday evening. Time passed and I found myself with some free time, discovered they were still going and so I went along.

You don't have to have an audition to join. You don't even have to be able to read music. Although those that can't sing soprano, on the basis that they tend to have the tune. I sing alto, because I can't sing very high. But I can read music. There's certainly an expectation that the altos know what they're doing, which is not always true! There are men in the choir too, but fewer and it feels like a lot more of them know what they're doing.

We tend to sing songs that most people know. So we've done songs from some musicals like My Fair Lady, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. And popular songs from the likes of ABBA, The Beach Boys and The Carpenters. And other well-known things. Hallelujah is well-liked in the choir because it's fun to sing, although the altos are the only section who never get a part of the tune. Sometimes singing songs you know is hard because when you're not singing the tune, you have to not sing the bit you know. Whereas if you didn't know it to start with, you end up feeling like your part is the tune.

It tends to meet during term time. So at the end of term at the start of December there's a less of a concert and more of an opportunity to watch us practise. I've never actually made it to one because that's when work gets busiest. We have a long Christmas break and a long summer break and a concert in March. Two years ago we sung at the local folk festival, and are going to again this summer, I think. Concerts are hard, but easier when you've practised a lot.

I like singing, although it feels harder than it used to be. When I was in primary school I was in the ordinary school choir. And also in the one you had to audition for, which was small. I don't remember being able to sing the right notes at the right times being so hard then! In secondary school I was briefly in the choir. All I remember from it was the bloke who took it trying to make us laugh when we were singing at a concert.

December Talking Meme: my username
Saturday 10th January 2015 10:07 pm

[info]aralias asked me to talk about my username.

It is Paranoidangel - all one world and no capital letter on A (I have seen other people use both these variations). In some places it's already taken so I have to put a 42 on the end, but where I can I have paranoidangel. Mostly people tend to use PA for short, although sometimes it's Para - that seems to be less recent, though.

It started at uni when we played Quake on a Friday night - and by night I mean that literally because we didn't start until the bar closed and we finished around 6am Saturday morning. People tended to use some sort of pseudonym on it. Since the internet was still quite new at that point the only one I really had was my login, which I still use now as my secret identity.

But at the time the first thing that popped into my mind was "paranoid android" (ie Marvin from Hitchhikers). But the game wouldn't let me have that many characters, so I just went with Paranoid.

About a year later I was setting up an account on Freeserve, who at the time provided dial up internet. I had to come up with an email address that was, word2 had to be unique, but word1 could be anything. I was happy with word1 being my first name, but I disliked the idea of word2 being my last name. So I went for paranoid, but it was already taken.

This was the time that Buffy was on and in the moment of having to think something up in a hurry, I decided that angel would be the best word to tack onto the end of it.

When I needed a pseudonym on the internet, paranoidangel sounded like a good choice.

December Talking Meme: Favourite Tolkien character
Monday 29th December 2014 3:13 pm

Finally getting back to these! [info]lindahoyland asked for my favourite Tolkien character.

The trouble is, my favourite depends a bit on what I've last read or seen, and when we're talking.

I really like Sam. He was my favourite for a while. He's loyal, and he's brave without being the brave one, if that makes sense. It's more of a background bravery. He went with Frodo, even though he wasn't so keen on the idea of adventure. He carries the ring for a bit, and then willingly gives it up - that's a pretty exclusive club of people who do that. He's an all round good egg, dependable and also the person you want by your side when throwing the One Ring into a volcano.

And then there's Aragorn. But I'm less interested in his destiny and being a King and a Ranger and marrying Arwen than I am in him growing up among Elves. It's more Estel that's my favourite than Aragorn, really. Once he's Aragorn he's far more a bog-standard hero type. Albeit one with a very pretty sword (I am anyone's for a pretty sword).

And then, of course, there's Elrond (seeing him in The Hobbit yesterday wielding a pretty sword helped with that). But Elrond is someone who loses nearly everyone he's ever loved and carries on anyway.

If I absolutely had to pick one character to be my favourite it would be Elrond and Estel. They're both interesting separately, but far more interesting together.

AO3 stats meme
Friday 9th May 2014 4:38 pm

This is not the most useful place to look at statistics because the only fics I have on AO3 are for ficathons (mostly Yuletide) or other rare stuff. So by definition the non-Yuletide rare stuff is never going to get many people reading. Also, other people seem to have kudos in the triple figures, I don't understand how that's even possible. But at least my top ten kudos all has two figures, which I think is pretty good going (especially as kudos is a fairly recent feature).

Trick or Treat meme
Sunday 27th October 2013 8:38 pm

Having seen this from a couple of people, and commented on it, I thought I should put it on my blog too. It being half term this week, so ballet and choir stops for a break (and it happens to be a non-Rotary week) it means I have plenty of time to find things to treat with.

Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and I'll leave you a treat. It will most likely be a picture, a very short ficlet or something about how great you are. Saying something leading such as "I like x" is highly likely to get you a treat involving x.

Year in fic meme
Wednesday 2nd January 2013 5:18 pm

This year I wrote and posted:

Not including 2011's Yuletide and Fandom Stocking, because I wrote those fics in 2011, I wrote:

21 drabbles/double drabbles for B2MEM Bingo, plus a four things story that consisted of drabbles

Doctor Who:
Five things story
New Who remix story
Story for not_prime_time
15,000 word Big Bang story
DW Femslash story

Press Gang:
Story for ship_swap

1000 word stories in Downton Abbey, SJA, Downtime and Blake's 7
500 word stories in Make It or Break It and Downtime
Drabbles/double drabbles in Blake's 7, Quantum Leap and Dance Academy

Which comes to 38 stories in 11 fandoms and a total of about 34,000 words.

Overall Thoughts:

At the beginning of the year I struggled to write much - I did spend a couple of months feeling crap. Then B2MeM Bingo helped with writing, and at the same time I got more energy. I felt like I hadn't written anything beyond 1000 words (apart from my AU Big Bang story) because everything I wrote for Yuletide was so short, but I can see a few 2000-3000 word fics in there, so it's fairly standard for me, I think.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?

More if you include all the B2MeM drabbles. If you exclude them then it comes to less. But then there was a lot of sport going on this summer, which didn't allow much time for writing. Or anything else for that matter.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?

I didn't expect to write most of the Yuletide fandoms. But they're a bit of a special case. I wasn't expecting to write quite so much Doctor Who though.

What's your own favourite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?

Lost For Words, I think. It was just a fun Doctor Who adventure with an interesting alien. And at 3100 words, a length I like!

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

I did take part in dw_femslash for the first time. I suppose I learnt how to ship two characters I don't necessarily ship, but I've done that before - it's just a case of finding a way round it that you can believe and make believable.

From my past year of writing, what was....

My best story of this year:

Chasing Memories, if only because it involved the most time and managed to get over the minimum word count (if only by less than 1000 words).

My most popular story of this year:

Chasing Memories got recced on Calufrax. Remembering the Future got recced for Yuletide. And in terms of number of comments (+kudos) it's Homework Ethics.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

Chasing Memories, ironically. But my trouble with Big Bangs is I write things very few people want to read and this one involved First Doctor companions in a Seventh Doctor story.

Most fun story to write:

Probably The Consquences of Saying No, for trying to suggest as many ships as possible in Press Gang.

Story with the single sexiest moment:

Chasing Memories has a kiss. That's probably the closest to counting than anything else.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:

I didn't have any of those.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:

Maybe The Bridge at Sunset for making me think about Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.

Hardest story to write:

New World Alumni. I think because I was trying to prevent hhertzof from guessing I wrote it by writing in a different style and then struggling with the style I'd chosen. I still think it could be better.

Biggest Disappointment:

Not really writing any Sarah & Harry stuff and not managing more Tolkien longer than a drabble. Or any other fandom.

Biggest Surprise:

B2MeM Bingo.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:

I don't think there are any really.

Fic-writing goals for 2013:

1. Write some more Sarah & Harry and Elrond (or his relatives, at any rate)
2. Write more fics > 1000 words
3. At least do some planning for Lynda Day at the Chalet School
4. Write some Big Bang length stuff - not necessarily for a Big Bang (depending on what comes up and what's suitable)
