I purposely uploaded my Bad Day icon to my Dreamwidth account so I could use it when I crosspost this to LJ and DW. Yes, things have been that bad. It's mostly been lots of little things, but I am definitely having a bad year. The past two weeks I have:

- Suddenly got ridiculously busy at work. I can't see that next week's going to be any better and it's not going to be helped by me spending almost all of Wednesday and Thursday in a training session.

- So cold. It's been getting down to -9C at night. My hands are really dry and cracking - they're even dry on the insides of my fingers, and it's usually only the outsides of my hands that get that bad. The worst part is that the heating at work is rubbish, so it's freezing all morning and boiling in the afternoon. Friday, which was particularly cold, was so cold at work that I couldn't feel my fingers with fingerless gloves on. Which is because they're fingerless, but I just can't type with gloves on.

- Sunday evening my heating started humming when the boiler went off. It took me ages to track it down because it sounds like a transformer hum. Things work so fast when you're renting - I called the estate agent on Wednesday, they're sending someone to look at it next week. If the heating broke I definitely wouldn't ring the estate agent.

- Because my boiler is so loud I don't have it come on until I get up. Thursday morning it was 10C in the house, Friday morning it was 9C. Even my head was cold. I ended up leaving the heating on last night turned down, but due to that and the humming I've been wearing ear plugs, which irritate my ears, but they're the good ones. And I've still been waking up at the noise and I'm really not good on no sleep.

- Finally made it to ballet, after missing the first two weeks of term due to being dizzy. The good part is that I actually managed to get all the way round on a pirouette this week. It helped that I was actually well enough to balance, as it does involve standing on the tiptoes of one foot while going round quite quickly.

- Joined the local choir. You don't have to be able to sing, which is handy because I haven't really sung since primary school. Being able to read music helps, but I was very glad I'm not a bloke because some of their parts was in bass clef and my bass clef reading was shaky enough when I had to do it regularly. I enjoyed it, but it's going to take a bit of getting used to, reading two notes at the same time, working out which one is mine and reading the words at the same time. I was very welcome as I'm an alto and they were short of those last term. (I wasn't sure at first because the parts didn't have names in primary school and I'm sure my voice has changed since then, but having been I can confirm I definitely can't sing as high as soprano).

- Managed to kill Firefox on my netbook by accidentally upgrading 3.6 to 9 and then 7 wouldn't accept it was my default browser. I finally managed to get 9 to use my profile for 7, which solved the problem.

- General other things on my computers being a pain that required time to fix

- I have eaten quite a bit of wheat! I've had whole meals of wheat pasta and wheat spaghetti and not been ill. I bought myself some bourbon biscuits and haven't been ill on two of those a day either. But it was really hard to go down the biscuit aisle and choose a biscuit because there was so much choice. I haven't brought myself to eat bread yet because I don't want to remind myself what it tastes like if I have to go back to Genius bread (which I currently think tastes nice).

- Managed to pull down the curtain rail in my bedroom. I am getting a friend of mine to fix it, but I feel like such a useless girl to have to get a man to help. But it's not because I'm a girl it's because I'm accident prone and likely to make it worse if I'm left to do it myself.

- Still feel like I'm waiting to get my life back and it's been a few weeks short of three years.

I've complained about cliffhangers before, but this one is directly related to Sherlock and the cliffhangers at the end of both series. I'm not going to spoil what happens, not least because I don't actually know.

1st January I sat down to watch the new episode of Sherlock. It started with a 'Previously on' which surprised me because I couldn't think of anything they needed to remind us about. And then I supposed they were going to show us at Sherlock and John met etc. But then they cut to the cliffhangery bit at the end of series 1. At which point I remembered there had been a cliffhanger. So clearly it worked well in getting me to watch the second series.

Having established this I then decided I didn't need to watch it and carried on sorting out where I was on my cross stitch. When I next looked up I realised they'd resolved the cliffhanger. I don't know how they did, but it's entirely academic because I don't know what the cliffhanger was. So knowing the resolution would be no help at all. I could watch it on the iPlayer (as the advert on 5 Live told me the other evening) but I just don't care that much.

Skip ahead to the end of series 2 last Sunday, which ended on a cliffhanger. There's been lots of speculation about the resolution and I was quite interested in it on Monday (all I was good for after the episode on Sunday was bed, since it finished quite late). But it's been interesting seeing the stuff in the newspapers (well, on The Guardian that Dad sends to me, I'm not quite interested to look for it myself).

The thing is, it's all very interesting and mysterious etc and if the resolution was on tomorrow, I'd probably watch it and go "Oh, that makes sense." In a year's time, however, I'll have forgotten there was a cliffhanger at all and by that time the robot spaceship speculation could all turn out to be true without a single clue and I'd be none the wiser.

Which raises the question: what's the point? Well, with people currently discussing it, it's going to get people interested in the show, which is fine and understandable. But how long are they going to keep discussing it: a week, a month? Certainly not until whenever the third series is. Everyone would have forgotten by then. So they'd have been better off making the cliffhanger the first or second episode and just tying it all up nicely at the end of the third. The amount of speculation would probably be about the same and people will actually care about the resolution.

I have mostly spent this week being dizzy and working. Although I have managed to get through most of my to-do list - there were things on there I could do lying down or only took five minutes of sitting up.

Although this weekend I have felt well enough to move around a bit and I have finally put all my books, CDs and DVDs on my bookshelves. And then I took photos of them. The last two (Flickr orders them in reverse) are from a funny angle because there's not much space in that corner.

As you can see, there's not a lot of space left... If I owned this house the shelves would be floor to ceiling. I don't have any more space left along the walls in the spare room. Although I might be able to fit another one in and have it sticking out a bit (the room's a funny shape). Theoretically I could have shelves in the middle of the room, but it is supposed to be a spare room too, and I do need space to unfold the bed. But I haven't used the tops of the shelves yet, so when I run out of space I'll buy some bookends and start on those. When I run out of space up there I need to get rid of some books. According to LibraryThing I have 435 books, which is plenty. Maybe one day when I have a house big enough to fit them in I can have more.

There are still things in my room at home. The bookshelves still have ornaments and rabbits (of the cuddly variety) on them. There are still things in the cupboards too (including a lot of videos). But the cupboard doors are being used to keep bunny's hammock up, so I can't open them, otherwise her hammock falls down and she falls out.

I had all these things I was going to do. And then I remembered that working is quite wearing, and by the time I've got home, had dinner and a lie down, there's not a lot of evening left. Especially when I have to have a lie down later on. I much preferred not working, I hardly got tired or dizzy over the Christmas holidays.

But I was still going to get lots done this weekend. Until I got dizzy on Thursday. Since this is a random dizziness for no reason, it takes a week to go away. After two days of not working, I'm now bored. Not because I have nothing to do (I have plenty to read and write) but because I feel fine when I'm lying down and want to get up and do things. But I can't. It's so frustrating.

I don't really make new years resolutions because I tend to forget them. Plus you can't change the whole of you all at once, so one thing's enough.

Last year I said I would go on a day trip at least once a month. If you count up the number I did and divide my twelve I succeeded. If you count it by month I failed in October. I knew it as well, I just didn't want to go anywhere.

This year I have resolved to put things off less. Before I was ill I used to try and get things done, then I could sit down and do what I liked. But that doesn't work any more because I have to stop and rest. So instead I am going to write down things I need to do as I think of them, and then do them. And try not to leave them all until the weekend, but it doesn't matter, as long as I do them. And writing them down should mean that I remember to do them. I already have three things on the list...

I only wrote one Yuletide fic this year and it was:

The Three Sisters (2316 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Downton Abbey
Characters: Mary Crawley, Edith Crawley, Sybil Crawley
Summary: Once upon a time there were three sisters and they loved each other very much.

I saw Downton Abbey on the list of fandoms and thought I could probably write that if I tried. It turned out I could. My recipient asked for anything with Mary in and then gave a list of ideas. Given that I have a younger sister, I thought I knew something about what it might be like to have two. Hence why the story ended up featuring all three sisters. But also, Sybil was my favourite character, however, as I re-watched the relevant bits of Downton Abbey (and discovered it was much improved without the Bates and Bates/Anna stuff), that Mary was a lot more interesting than I thought. She might now be my favourite character.

I have managed to read all the fandoms I know in the Yuletide archive before the reveal. I was going to do a recs post but I realised that although I was bookmarking things on A03 to start with, I haven't for a while, so I can't remember what I thought was good any more. Also, the Yuletide comm has so many recs posts, it's just got boring now (and it's not helped that someone's set the RSS feed to just show the first line, so half the posts I have to open just to find out that either the recs are in a different post, or I don't know the fandoms).

So instead, since I've been saving them for this, I'll talk about the fics I got:

everywhere you're leaving something (4308 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Spooks
Characters: Erin Watts, Dimitri Levendis, Beth Bailey, Tariq Masood
Summary: Erin comes to terms with the workings of Section D.

This is a great story about Erin joining the team and getting to know Dimitri. It's just the story I wanted about the time between series 9 & 10.

Star Wars on Bannerman Road (772 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Sarah Jane Adventures
Characters: Luke Smith, Sky Smith, Rani Chandra, Clyde Langer
Summary: Luke is home for the holidays, so it's time to work on Sky's pop culture education.

A bonus Madness story! It has lovely friendship stuff between all four and sibling stuff between Luke and Sky.

I am rubbish about saying why I liked these things, but I did. The best bit is I put both these fandoms on my list because they just had their last ever episodes this autumn and I got fic for them both!

(And why does A03's share button create some lovely html, then randomly put paragraph tags around the summary so it appears two lines below the bit that says 'Summary:'?)

I was having withdrawal symptoms not playing with blogging sites, so I have created a fanfic blog over at Dreamwidth at pa_fic.

All of my fanfic is on my website at http://www.paranoidangel.me.uk/fanfic/. There you can get an RSS feed of the whole thing, or just fandoms and there's a link in the sidebar that tells you how to search multiple tags and/or fandoms.

Everything I've written since March 2009 is also crossposted to LJ at pa_fic. Now pa_fic will have everything from 2012. I haven't copied over the old stuff to LJ and DW because the crossposting plugin won't do that with old entries to communities. And the version on my website gives better options for finding things.

Dad's friend brought round his Samsung Galaxy tablet today. Since my sister had her iPad home I compared the two. I prefer the Galaxy Tab because I can actually navigate the panes (the iPad randomly stops recognising my finger swipe, but always works for my sister) and the screen is nicer to swipe your finger on (although you can only really tell if you have a frenzy banana in Fruit Ninja).

I thought that if I had a tablet I'd be bored with it after a week. It turns out that was an optimistic estimate: it took an hour. There's only so many times you can play Fruit Ninja (or any other game) and I constantly have to hold it at a funny angle to stop the reflections. It drove me mad surfing to find out how to use the thing (there's a manual, but you have to download it from the website). I eventually worked out to click on a link you have to click above it and the keyboard has no delete button, only backspace and it's really hard getting the cursor to the right place in the text.

Given that you can buy a laptop or two netbooks for the price of an iPad or a Galaxy Tab, there's just no contest, given how much more versatile a netbook is.

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
Definitely more! There are quite a few fandom stocking fics up there, but they're all 1000 words or less and half of them are drabbles. But since I spent half the year on a 25,000 word Big Bang, I thought I would write a lot less than I did.

Where did you publish/archive your stories?
Everything's on my website. All the Doctor Who and SJA fics apart from the fandom stocking ones are on A Teaspoon and an Open Mind. The only reason the fandom stocking ones aren't on there is because I couldn't face uploading that many at once, so never got round to it. The Yuletide, Remix and Big Bang ones are on Archive of our Own.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2011?
I did write Boromir and Faramir for the first time ever outside of drabbles. I wrote Sasha/Payson and Sarah/Jo for Yuletide and fandom stocking respectively. I wrote something in Make It or Break It for the first (and so far only) time. Various things I wrote for fandom stockings contain things I wouldn't usually. Basically, writing for other people meant that I wrote things I hadn't before and therefore wouldn't have predicted. The fandoms are fairly predictable though.

I did write a fic entirely in emails, which I wouldn't have expected - it was because it was on a fan bingo square.

What’s your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
My Big Bang fic, The Atlantis Sacrifice. Which is just as well, given that I lived with it for six months! But I enjoyed writing something long and plotty and shippy.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
Based on it being recced on <lj comm>calufrax</lj comm>, John Chesterton: Time Lord. Which I originally intended to write seriously, but I could only think of the ending and I could only think of it being a bit silly. So it ended up being not entirely serious.

Story most underappreciated by the universe?
There were quite a few stories that I posted to a deafening silence, with the exception of a comment, but The Atlantis Sacrifice having just the one (apart from my beta) was, well, expected since it was a Big Bang fic and the last time I did one of those I got no comments at all. But it still felt underappreciated, but since I'd enjoyed writing it so much, I didn't mind.

Story that could have been better?
Quite a few I expect. I can't quite bring myself to read through the contenders and pick one.

Sexiest story?
The most sexy thing that happens in any of them are kisses, but the sexiest of those is probably at the end of Just a Game.

Most fun story?
John Chesterton: Time Lord: see above re silliness.

Story with single sweetest moment?
In my opinion anyway, the hint from Jack that he has feelings for Elizabeth in The Atlantis Sacrifice.

The story that made you cry?
Technically speaking the answer to that is none of these. But the saddest story is probably Go Away Another Day, since it deals with Sarah's Aunt Lavinia dying.

Hardest story to write?
The Atlantis Sacrifice. There was a lot of re-writing going on and a lot of scenes I took out.

Easiest story to write?
Go Away Another Day because it was Sarah's POV of Rain, Rain, Come Again, so I pretty much had the plot and some of the dialogue already.

Most overdue story?
I started Just a Game in 2006...

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I signed up for a 25,000 word Big Bang and I learnt that about that number of words really is my maximum. And hard work. Mostly I wrote for myself, which was fine until I came to Yuletide and fandom stocking and now I'm finding it hard writing what other people want. But I did also do the femgenficathon and girlsavesboyfic ficathons this year, both of which I enjoyed. Although I learnt that with the latter, in the fandoms I write, the girl saving the boy and/or the world isn't that unusual.

Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
Assuming it's running again I plan to write an Ian/Barbara fic for the AU Big Bang. It's only 15,000 words, so I think that should be doable. And I plan to re-read all the Chalet School books so I can write Lynda Day at the Chalet School the year after - or later in the year if a suitable Big Bang presents itself. I want to write a murder mystery to find out if I can.

I've not been home for a whole day and I've finished all the computers stuff. Yesterday I was at home by 10.30 - the quiet roads made leaving at dawn worth it. So then we installed Linux Mint on my old netbook before lunch. After lunch we cloned the hard drive on my netbook, so now I have one that's exactly the same but without errors. And then yesterday and today I fixed the things in WP I wanted to fix and finished customising the CSS for the comment pages in LJ.

All just in time for the Yuletide archive to open, so now I need to read it, while watching my sister play Lego Pirates of the Caribbean. And write my fandom stocking fics.

We also did presents. I read the new Simon's Cat book in bed this morning because I woke up early and now I've started Lis Sladen's autobiography. Dad's reading Gin O'Clock (which was also my present).

According to quite a few people on LJ, they have broken it completely and the world is ending. Or something of that magnitude. It turns out that the bits they changed that I don't like, can be fixed by turning on customised comment pages. So I have now gone from hating them to liking them. Of course the difference is that I hate other people's because 90% of them are unreadable, whereas mine are by definition perfect. And red - you can't go wrong with red.

The trouble with this is that when I customised my layout (and made it less red, but now the red stands out nicely) I didn't bother with anything to do with customised comment pages because I wouldn't need them... 45 minutes later I've managed to change the text to a readable size, rather than a slightly too small to read comfortably size. And changed the border colour. At which point I had to stop and do other things, but I was having fun. Frustrating fun because it's hard to find what LJ has called its CSS elements. But it's better than doing similar things at work because here I can what I like, I'm the only person I have to please, and I don't have to have it done by Tuesday in five minute bits in between dealing with all the other work that needs doing.

So over Christmas, as well as installing Linux Mint on my old netbook and putting a new hard drive in my current one, I am also going to be playing with LJ CSS and a few things that need doing on WP. I have ten days off in a row (including weekends and bank holidays), I need something to do with that time and I've been thinking I need something like that to do, but there's only so many times you can change your layout.

My sole post all week has been the latest Big Finish releases, which included the subscriber special The Five Companions. Which was fun - I want to see more of Ian and Steven teaming up now.

Friday was our work Christmas party, which I've only just recovered from. All I did was to sit around and talk (and stand for an hour) but I was tired from it I slept for 11 hours Friday night, still felt tired and slept for 10 hours last night. Now I don't feel tired.

In the work secret santa for the first year in I don't know how many, I didn't get a Doctor Who related thing. I got a rabbit instead. Which is good, because generally you can't go wrong with with rabbits. However, this one has a hole in it that you're clearly meant to put something in, but no one knows what. There was no packaging, so presumably my santa doesn't know either. The most suggested things at the party were mobile, iPod and remote control. I tried putting my phone in it and the hole holds together too well to get anything in there easily. So I am stumped.

There was also food, which I mostly couldn't eat. The chef wouldn't understand that I just wanted to know what was in it, I didn't care about contamination, which she was more interested in telling me. I don't think she wanted me to eat at all. Fortunately, I brought my own - I remember last year well when I got a salad.

I have things booked for January now. I am going to see the Gymnastics at the O2. It feels like we can't get away from that place. I'm also going to see Spamalot. For the third time. But the first and second times were on Broadway and in the West End, this one's in my nearest city.

I have finished my Yuletide fic. And uploaded it. After I had it opened and the form filled in for ages while I tried to think up a summary (the title on the other hand came quite easily). I usually try to get it finished early, but I don't generally manage quite this early. The difference this year is that work hasn't been so busy for so long and I haven't had Rotaract. Usually I'd be dealing with our stall at the Christmas fair at the start of December, Cheese & Wine in January, various Christmas dinners and all the usual Rotaract stuff. It's actually been a quiet time of year, which makes a nice change.

Next I have six fandom_stockings to write. And I've signed up to write a 2000-5000 word Five Things fic for fivetimesbb. That's 400 words a thing it can't be too hard, can it? (famous last words). The current working summary for it is Five songs Johnny Chess wrote based on the stories his parents told him of their adventures with the Doctor in the TARDIS.

Along the same lines, but not involving actual writing, I am reccing for calufrax the first week in January. I know there were fics I wanted to rec last time but had to narrow it down. If only I'd written them down...

Of course, there's still Yuletide Treats. I haven't decided if I'm going to write any of those yet.

Friday I went to see Coldplay at the O2 in London with my sister. We had to go ridiculously early to avoid the rush hour traffic, so we got to spend an hour in the O2, which is cold, incidentally. Although we did buy a t-shirt each and a program book thing between us. I just got out the plastic rather than consider that the t-shirt was ten times the price I'd usually pay for a t-shirt. But at least they did them in small.

We discovered, when we were bored and joined the queue waiting for the doors to open, that there's a list of things you're not allowed to take into the O2. One of the things on the list is a flagpole. So beware, if you go to the O2, make sure to leave your flagpole at home.

Once we got in we found our seats easily, since they were in the same place as the other week for the tennis, just not so far back. The first band on was The Low Suns who were all right, but not terribly inspiring. After an interval that was just long enough to eat lunch, we had Emeli Sande, who was some generic female singer with an uninspiring tune and lyrics you couldn't hear. So while she was on I beat my sister's high score in Fruit Ninja on her iPhone by a lot and we played some Cat Physics - there's only so much you can do in the dark.

Then we had about 45 minutes before Coldplay went on, so we went out into the cold to stand up for a while, since we'd then be sitting for a while again. When we came back we found two people in our seats. It turned out that they'd decided that P meant F and we turfed them out.

By this point the standing area was nearly completely full, with only some space at the back near the bar. If we'd been down there we'd definitely have had a worse view than where we were sitting. My sister pointed out that as we're short it only takes someone of average height to stand in front of you. And from the back of the stand area we'd have been further away than where we were sitting too. The most bizarre thing was that the song that was playing before they came on was rap!

So then they came on and we discovered that the wristbands flashed. Presumably they were radio controlled. It was quite something to see all these flashing colours in the dark. They only had them turned on for three songs, I think just the three from their latest album.

When they played Yellow, the lights were all yellow (as in the photo) and they released massive balloons from the ceiling. There were some small glittery things as well, but given that they drift down during the tennis, that might not have been on purpose. Eventually the balloons got popped by the people in black standing around the stage.

They had another song where coloured bits came up from the floor and covered the walkway they had going out into the crowd from the stage. It turned out that the area at the end of the walkway was hollow and had people under it... and a piano! The piano came up from below and they did a song down there.

The two people in front of us spent most of the time filming it rather than watching. I didn't take many photos, partly because they don't come out very well in the dark and mostly because I was too busy watching.

There was a point where people were standing up and because it was near the end I could only stand if I was holding onto something because I felt so precarious up there. So I went to the toilet instead - I could hear perfectly out there and it was very surreal to have my wristband flash in the toilets!

Overall it was really good and I'd definitely go to another one. Although I think I'd probably wear an ear plug - I couldn't hear in my right ear on Friday night. When I got home at 1.15am it was buzzing. It's still ringing, but it's down to the level I get when I'm really dizzy, since I'm still tired and dizzy it could at least be partly that.

It's definitely winter - my hands are dry and have started cracking This is even though I wear gloves whenever I'm outside or in the car, and for doing the washing up and when it's cold in the house I wear fingerless gloves. But there's only so much you can do and I'm not feeling desperate enough to wear gloves when washing my hair or showering. It's not as bad as when I had a rabbit because there are some things you can't do with gloves on because straw and food sticks to them.

But at least there's only 11 days of work left. Well, 10 and a half for me as tomorrow I am off to see Coldplay. Annoyingly we have to be there two hours before it starts to avoid the rush hour, as it's on the wrong side of London. And by the time it finishes we'll be on the last train and I'll get home at 1.15am! Which is why all I have planned this weekend is to catch up on some of the stuff on my PVR because that's definitely all I'll be capable of. I know I will enjoy it, despite the fact that I got dizzy last time I was in the O2 and the last time I was up that late at night I couldn't stand up without falling over...

This morning I had a massive excel file I needed to run one macro on. It should have been a case of setting it off on the super computer and coming back when it was finished ten minutes later. Instead it took two hours and involved me running it multiple times when it crashed, opening and closing excel multiple times when it refused to save, and copying out bits of the file when it refused to do anything.

And then my netbook refused to boot into Ubuntu. Fortunately it's a problem I've had before and did actually take ten minutes to fix, rather than the two hours it took the first time.

Don't you just love computers?

I am so glad there's only three weeks left before Christmas, when I get ten days off in a row (including weekends and bank holidays). Although the two weeks coming are likely to be the busiest as we try and fit as many projects in as possible before Christmas in a rush.

In other news, I had mushrooms last night and wasn't ill. They were nice as well, I'd forgotten! Even better, I had them on pizza. Sainsbury's Free From pizza bases don't go completely solid in the oven either. They're just expensive, which is why pizza is a treat. But since the smallest amount of mushrooms I can buy was 150g, I will be eating mushrooms every night this week.

Mushrooms are the last thing I have to try before I'm onto wheat and wheat gluten. It's a tricky one because I don't want to eat something that I'll remember the taste of and then might not be able to eat again, but I could eat half a breaded fish from the fish and chip shop, so I will need to eat quite a bit of gluten to test it. I am intending to have a tube of Pringles because limiting yourself to one or two is really hard. I think it'll have to be pasta - I have plenty, so I can always have half ordinary, half gluten free.

At some point I will have to try an actual egg and not just egg in bread and biscuits. But since I really don't want to remember what one tastes like and then potentially not be able to eat one again, I'm not in a rush.
