Housemate rant
Saturday 23rd November 2002 12:15 am

There's two blogs I've been to now that are unreadable (beyond what you can see without scrolling down) because the background colour is constantly changing. So you can't get of the scrollbar, as its constantly moving, its taking up speed, so you can't do anything else at the same time, and half the time its a bloody awful colour anyway.

Landlady's bogged off over night, although not before first putting some washing on, so I had to take hers out of the washing machine so I could put mine in. On the plus side, someone has turned the heating up so I'm not actually freezing to death at the moment. Although, when I came back in after Tae Kwon Do Jacquie decided, for reasons best known to herself, that in order that people think someone's in, so they won't break in and steal things you need to leave lights on. Which is fine, and why I usually leave the landing and hall lights on, so it looks as though people are at the back of the house (specially as there's not many rooms at the front). Jacquie, on the other hand, also left the lounge and bathroom lights on. Which no-one can see from the front of the house. I assumed she'd locked the back doors, but I doubt it.

I also have this gripe about washing up. What I want to know is why, when it involves more effort, is it necessary to put cutlery in the box thing upside down (ie with the handle at the bottom)? I really don't understand it, and I don't appreciate the extra opportunity to stab myself with sharp knives either. And then there's the soaking thing. When I soak things, I put them on the side with water in. The alternative method seems to be to put everything in the sink/washing up bowl (really can't see the point of those, surely plugs are cheaper?), fill it with washing up liquid and water, and most importantly, the sponge. If anyone knows what the washing up spounge brings to the soaking procedure I would love to know (the comments are working, I've checked) because its been bugging me for ages. Obviously other people know things I don't.

And now I will go to bed before I fall over.

In search of T/T
Tuesday 19th November 2002 11:06 pm

Went in search of T/T fic on Fan Fiction.net. Went in search of decent Alias fic at the weekend on there. It doesn't improve, it really doesn't. There is some good stuff in there, there's just rather a lot of crap as well. The good thing about the Enterprise section is that you can list the fics focusing on certain characters. I will have to finish working my way through the T/T archive sites instead.

Saw The Road to Perdition tonight, as I was ushering at the cinema. It was good, I was pleasantly surprised. The showed the One Hour Photo trailer as well, which mainly consisted of Robin Williams bits, but Michael Vartan was in there a bit too. Can't decide about his hair in it, but will have to wait till it comes out on video to see it and decide properly, as they're only showing it from tomorrow to Friday and I'm busy on each of those nights.

Trip/T’Pol
Monday 18th November 2002 10:20 pm

Work was crap, as per usual. But I did at least avoid insulting too many people very much, which is something at least. Tae Kwon Do was quite good. We did a load of complicated things that I was crap at, although I sort of got the hang of them after a bit. Mind you, just about every one else found them hard as well. I have pretty much got my block sorted out, which is good. I can't do it fast because I need to think about it, but I actually feel like I'm getting somewhere.

I have finally read Differential. I started reading it when it first went up at Fan Fiction.net. It turned out so totally different to what I was expecting. And it was quite good. There isn't much Trip/T'Pol stuff out there, especially now TPTB have decided to go with Archer/T'Pol (what were they thinking?) and a lot of it is really quite bad. I think the trouble is writing T'Pol - she's a Vulcan, which is difficult to humans to grasp the intricacies of it, specially when you need her to be doing emotional stuff (like having sexual tension with Trip).

I almost feel protective of the Trip/T'Pol pairing. I think because I spotted it myself without anyone pointing it out to me. I spotted Sydney/Vaughn too, but that one is canon. T/T was at least up in the air for a bit. But we all know she'll get over Archer and realise Trip's the man for her. And he'll realise he's accidentally fallen in love with T'Pol. I mean, come on, they've flirted for goodness sake. Er, except that does tend to mean nothing, at least in my experience. I think the only times I've done it I didn't fancy the bloke in question, just enjoyed flirting with him. And blokes that have flirted with me didn't fancy me. Damn, I'm disproving my own theory here. I think I'd better stop now while I'm not too far behind.

Character analysis
Sunday 17th November 2002 10:36 pm

I'm on a Trip/T'Pol fic reading mission at the moment. I really don't want to go back to work tomorrow. I've been thinking about various characters in TV/Books etc, particularly the ones that everyone likes, so here's my late night analysis (still thinking 10 o'clock is pumpkin time after last week).

Duncan Lennox (The Bill)
I remember my first impressions of Duncan were that he was a nice guy. And he is, its just that putting my finger on exactly why is more difficult. Up until the fire (I'm not talking about post-fire Duncan at all) he had it all. He was married to a woman who worked in the stock market and therefore earned a lot of money. He had a really nice apartment (ie too big to call a flat) overlooking the Thames. And as other people in CID pointed out, he wasn't the one who paid the mortgage. When Liz was sent threatening letters he made sure she was safe by letting her stay at his place (his wife being away at the time). He and Liz always got on well, but then everyone got on with Duncan. I was thinking that he's always happy, but then he has does his fair share of whinging. I think perhaps people like him because he does all the polite stuff, but because he geniunly wants to know, not because he's honest.

Captain Carrot (Discworld)
Terry Pratchett explains it better than I could, I just haven't read any of the relevant books recently. In a way he's a lot like Duncan, in that he's very honest and he will ask people how they are because he wants to know. It helps that he has a good memory, mind you. He has also got the girl.

Trip Tucker (Enterprise)
Trip is slightly different from the other two. He is also honest, but he is more blunt. He says what he thinks, which isn't so good when he's in command of the ship and has to be diplomatic to other species. I'm not so sure everyone automatically likes him, he's had to work at it. Admittedly, a small group of people thrown together with only other species they've just met for companship, disliking anyone on the ship is a bit of a problem. At first Trip has a tendency to rub people up the wrong way, but I think that they get used to his particular brand of 'honesty'. Having said that, the thing he has in common with the other two is that the polite stuff he does is because he wants to know.

Really shouldn't get into all this deep stuff while I'm tired, but if you disagree with any of the crap I just wrote (or if you agree) send me an e-mail. I'm working on getting a comments thing for this.

Last meme

Last one:

1. What's on your bedside table? My tissue box, clock, lamp, remote controls for TV, video and stereo, teddy and space for my glasses

2. What's the lamest part of your music collection? Um, the CDs that aren't labelled so I have no idea whats on them. They could be videos, mind you.

3. What do you eat when you raid the fridge at night? I don't, there's bugger all in there worth raiding at that time of night.

4. What is your secret guaranteed weeping film? Can't think of any off the top of my head.

21. Have you ever been in a school play? Yes, I was in Oliver in the last year of Middle School. I was one of the orphans and one of Fagan's Gang and actually had one line. Decided I hated acting after that though and would much rather be backstage.

22. Have you ever been in love? No.

23. Do you like yourself and believe in yourself? Um, sometimes.

24. Have you ever done any illegal drugs? No.

25. Do you think you're cute? I can be, its how I don't have to beg.

First meme
Saturday 16th November 2002 10:47 pm

Haven't written in here for a while due to flu. I've had a few Getting to know you type e-mails, so I'll answer them on here for lack of anything else to write really. 2. WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING NOW? I've just finished Night Watch, so I'll be onto Maurice and his Educated Rodents next. Although I'm also partway through Alias: Declassified and I started The Two Towers a while ago, but bored, so I'll wait till I see the film before I finish it.

3. WHAT'S ON YOUR MOUSE PAD? I don't usually use one because I just use the touchpad, but its a free one from Unilever I think that I got at a careers fair because its round, which I like because it fits on the small space on my desk. At work I have the work's one, which is bright green with the 2002 calendar on it.

5. FAVOURITE MAGAZINES? SFX

Terry Pratchett
Friday 8th November 2002 8:24 pm

Everyone seems to have a diary of some sort these days! Added more of them to the top of this.

There was an article about Terry Pratchett in the Guardian. It was quite funny, although the funny bits were unintentional.

"Try the name out on friends and colleagues, and it certainly isn't met with universal enthusiasm, or even recognition."
Well, actually... Although that probably says more about my friends than how well known Terry Pratchett is.

"The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents (published next month in paperback."
Really? Then how come its sitting in my room at the moment?

Pratchett's new novel, Night Watch, is published by Doubleday, priced 17.99.
If you can find anywhere for any more than about 13.99 that's quite impressive. Mine was 8.99, it had gone up 49p in the past few weeks since I last looked.

No Tae Kwon Do tonight, or fencing last night because I've banged my thumb and split my nail about a third of the way down, which is really quite amazingly painful. And the last thing I want to happen is it to drop off at that point, because that will really hurt. I can't put a plaster over it because it still hurts too much for that at the moment. Plus I have the cold that's going round at the moment.

I can't decide what I want for Chanukah at the moment either and its only three weeks away. My sister has her present, but no-one else does. But then no-one else has told me what they want. I havn't asked them, to be fair.

Had fun playing with Weiss today. No, not like that. Get your mind out of the gutter. He's an Alice bot on the ABC's Alias site. I really enjoyed the mission, I've done the second one now (Numbers). The fact that it all links in to the series is really cool. Plus its interesting to type stuff and see how the bot responds. He tells you Vaughn is his friend, he can't talk about Sydney, he has no idea who Jack is. Ask where Irina Derevko is though and that's a really interesting response.

Enterprise has just finished downloading, so will just get it in before Friends and Have I Got News For You, which, obviously, is very interesting at the moment. Then will have to make some CDs as I've filled up 3 CD-RWs, 4 zip disks and my hard drive. Not good. Need new computer with 100Gb hard drives.

Corfe Castle dream
Wednesday 6th November 2002 10:29 pm

I had such a weird dream last night. I was somewhere else, but also where Corfe Castle was. So we went up to it, but we were approaching it from a different direction. It didn't look much like Corfe Castle either though. When we were there (don't ask who we were, I don't know) I saw an eclipse of the moon by a planet. I decided that it was Jupiter and it passed over the moon very quickly, then moved so fast it was out of sight not long afterwards. Then I could see other planets and I nearly got hit by the Earth. I realised that must mean we were in space and we really ought to be wearing spacesuits. But I couldn't be doing with it and we were actually just on a different part of the world.

It was that weird it didn't even make sense at the time!

Got my books from Amazon. Well, 3 of them. The other one will be arriving tomorrow. They didn't charge me extra, but I have to ask: why? Very strange. I only ordered from them because the Internet bookshop didn't list two of my books. Although amazon did say you could pre-order a book that came out on 1st November (I did the ordering on 2nd)!

Another slight change to the look of the blog. The links at the top are to other people's diaries/journals/blogs that I read at the moment.

Whats happened today? People at work wanting the moon on a stick, blowing out my candle last night and accidentally getting wax all over my bedside table and my face (oops! didn't taste very nice either). I can't remember my plan for the rpg so I have no idea where I'm going next! Apart from waking up in the infirmary. Maybe I'll see where it goes from there.

Seven Chevrons and Fandom Meme
Tuesday 5th November 2002 10:41 pm

Some fun for a change.

Seven Chevrons

Chevron 1:
What is your favourite Stargate SG-1 season?
I do quite like the 3rd, there's some good stuff in there

Chevron 2:
Who is your favourite Stargate villain?
Has to be Apophis

Chevron 3:
Who's your favourite minor character?
Martouf

Chevron 4:
Which team (other than SG-1) would you want to be on?
Can I cheat and say SG-D?

Chevron 5:
If you could be on a SG team, what position would you want?
One where I'm not likely to die or suffer from a bad case of snake in the head

Chevron 6:
If given the opportunity, would you become a Tok'ra host? (if yes, what would your symbiote's name be?)
I might actually. Although what a Tok'ra would make of the things that go on inside my head I don't know. Not sure about the name though.

Chevron 7:
If you played a character on the show, what would they be like?
Um, Major Klein perhaps.

A meme I found somewhere (whatever that is, I think I sort of get it)

The one who seduced you and fucked you over and broke your heart in a million pieces and laughed about it: Farscape

The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp in the sheets: Babylon 5

The mysterious dark gothy one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 a.m. at weird coffeehouses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized he really was fucking crazy: Red Dwarf

The one you spent a whole weekend in bed with and who drank up all your liquor, and whom you'd still really like to fuck again although you're relieved he doesn't actually live in town: Time Trax

The steady: Stargate

The alluring strangers whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with: Blakes 7

The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with but ultimately you're just good buddies 'cause the friendship is there but the chemistry ain't: Charmed

The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool guy except it's never really gone anywhere: Star Wars (original trilogy), Andromeda

The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at him and thinking Him? How the hell did he land all these cool babes?: Earth: Final Conflict

The one your friend has fallen for like a ton of bricks and whom she keeps babbling to you about on the phone for hours, and you'd be happy for her except you just know it's going to end badly: Dark Angel, Smallville

I have updated the site at least today. Done a couple of hours of work at work today. Caught up on Angel episodes. Still haven't watched last weeks Have I Got News For You. God, my life is boring. As was the bits of Return of the Jedi I watched while I was hanging my washing up.

Spending money
Sunday 3rd November 2002 4:16 pm

I have updated my site, but the ftp couldn't connect, so I'll try again later. Annoyingly, I don't have a photo of me with Garwin, but I'll have to ask if anyone else does. It was only when I was playing about with my photos that I realised I have to scan in the ones of me with the guests (well, JR and Chris, I have my eyes closed with Jay, so I won't bother). I'm not sure whats going on with the one with Douggie as its so bright you can't see my face. I hate giving my camera to other people, because you have no control over how the photos are going to come out.

Spent loads of money this weekend. I found Never Been Kissed in Virgin. Its strange how much the character of Sam Coulson shares with Vaughn. And then ordered some books. Had to use amazon as the internet bookshop don't seem to have two of the books I want, which is a bit shit, frankly. At least all the ones I want are out, so I can get them all delivered at the same time. And then I bought my Gatecon ticket. My credit card bill next month is going to be hideous, as the hotel bill from last weekend will also be on it!

Have to go back to work tomorrow. That's a bugger. My boss asked my on Friday (as I was leaving and was therefore tired and not in the mood) whether I was feeling motivated to get the stuff I was doing right. If course not! My only motivation in going there at all is that I need the money. Although I did get quite excited when I discovered the printer can photocopy two-sided to two-sided on its own without you having to put the paper back in at all. Its quite sad really.

I've also decided not up update my livejournal any more. I can't be doing with it really, but I'm going to keep the id in case I want to use it again, or comment in other peoples or contribute to any communities.

SG5
Thursday 31st October 2002 9:37 pm

Haven't posted for a while due to being tired. I got 3.5 hours of sleep Sunday night (entirely my own fault) and not that much more any night before that. Then it took me 9 hours to get from Blackpool train station to Oxford train station on Monday, where I was constantly changing trains (busy) and sitting around at Birmingham for so long I thought I wasn't getting home. Not good. And just realised I haven't told my video The Bill is only an hour long tonight. But new Buffy!

Anyway, will maybe do some website stuff this weekend as my photos will be back by then (I took 2 films worth!). Spent serious amounts of money even before Chris Judge's talk on Sunday. Where I paid half of 150 to grope Garwin Sanford (Narim). I'd much rather it had been JR's (Martouf) but he was too expensive, plus it was apparently quite bony. Garwin did at least have a nice arse, even if he is nearly the same age as my mother.

Er, what else. All the usual stuff really. Will put something on my site maybe, or write it in here when I'm feeling more inspired. I must do something with this as well, I've been getting inspiration from reading other people's recently.

SG5
Wednesday 23rd October 2002 10:56 pm

I almost wish I hadn't watched the thing on Human Instinct now, it was gross. And kind of scary. And reading angsty Alias fic with lots of UST, probably not helping. I so need the time off this (long) weekend, work's getting a bit stressy now. I think we should get more time off a year, it would really help. Plus if we didn't get so overworked. Not that I can really complain, given that I start and finish on time nearly every day, although I have done some overtime every week since August now.

Looking forward to SG5. Considering how I can convince Jay and JR to pick me up so I won't look so short in the photo :) Will have to hatch some plans when I meet up with everyone on Friday. Looking forward to going up to uni as well. I haven't been there since term 2 last year, so its been a while. Its always strange though, because it feels like home, apart from the bits that have changed, those feel weird. Plus being able to walk across campus and not recognise a single person. That so rarely happened while I was there.

Have thought about packing, but still working myself up to it! Will do some in the morning when I'm feeling more awake, hopefully going to get a lie-in. Instead of planning to go to bed at 11 and getting there at quarter to 12, I am going to stay up and watch Buffy. So it will be at least tomorrow by the time I get there. Which will doubtless be my earliest night until Monday, which will be ridiculously early.

So little time, so much to watch
Tuesday 22nd October 2002 10:28 pm

Have lots of Buffy, Angel and Alias to download but no time to download it in! Was really busy at work today just after lunch, then there wasn't very much to do later on. Which was probably just as well. We're being checked for ISO a week on Thursday, so really need to find the time to go through all the projects and check everything is there and signed.

Only one more working day to go! Really looking forward to seeing Jay Acavone again, he was so funny last time. Having said there's no way I want my photo done, I can't help thinking that one with Jay and JR Bourne would be quite nice :)

CDs
Monday 21st October 2002 11:27 pm

I have the tendency to get tired and go to bed before I get the chance to write in this. Maybe I should get round to it earlier in the day. Have finally done some CDs today, I've filled up 2 CD-RWs with crap now, so I will have to sort it all out at some point. Have managed to get nearly 800 words for my Stargate essay, whilst watching Insurrection. Although if I stood near my computer the static was so bad I could hear it! The rest of the time at least the sound was clear. Pity the film's not much good then.

I'm definitely stewarding at SG5, which is cool. I can't wait till I go! And going up to uni on Thursday which could be kind of strange because I haven't been back since about March, so a lot has changed since then. Was going to watch Buffy tonight, but I'm not going to get it in, so I'll have a search for some more good Alias S/V fic instead.

Alias
Saturday 19th October 2002 11:59 pm

Okay, so that wasn't quite what I was expecting. Next to Sydney Vaughn looks like sucha wimp, being as she can run faster than him and kick his arse if she wanted to. I don't think he is, it's just the comparison. Its the same as Xander looking wimpy next to Buffy and Vila being a coward in comparison to everyone else on the ship. They're the normal people and that's probably how most of us would act in the same situation. Its the ones who can kick arse who are different. And I have to say, I feel sorry for Sloane. I just can't get over the fact he shares his name with a bad guy in Deep Space 9 and looks like Rene Auberjonois (if you don't look too carefully).

I got loads done today, which is good. I have to do some stuff with CDs though tomorrow, so I could watch some more of the Stargate film while I do it I suppose. I could always re-write my essay on the train next weekend. Maybe I'll be bored enough to finish reading The Two Towers, although I doubt it somehow.

Alias went to London on Channel 4 today. You can tell its London because they showed a red bus in the establishing shot. Because of course you don't get those anywhere else. Yeah, right. I doubt they really shoot a few seconds worth in all these different places somehow. I finally remembered to watch Casualty tonight. It was kind of weird to see him in a completely different role but looking the same. I only saw hin in two scenes though because Chris rung in the middle of it and the entire point of Russell Boulter is to listen to him. Not that watching's nice too, but its not quite the same if he's muted. Plus I didn't really want to watch too much of it being as I would quite like to sleep tonight. I'm really going to have to get some sleep in this week in preparation for getting ridiculously tiny amounts next weekend.

Alias
Friday 18th October 2002 10:58 pm

At last the week is finally over. I have watched so much Alias this week, and gone to a load (ok, a few) websites and read some fan fic. Oh, and got stung by a massive great but wasp. On the bottom of my toe. Which was really fun. Or not. I am going to update my website this weekend. I think Michael Vartan is going to get added to the guinness list. Not that I'm obsessed or anything. I keep thinking I need something to take my mind off him. I just need to see the rest of Alias, that I can get hold of, then once a week on Channel 4 won't prove much of a problem.

I can see how people get really into Alias. Its the same thing as Farscape, and a few years ago, Babylon 5. And that's only considering American TV. The only trouble is that you have to watch every episode in order to have a clue what is going on, and specially to appreciate it. Alias is the only one of the two that I've seen from the beginning. The trouble is that B5 faced not getting a fifth series (which might well have been a good thing in the end, but still) and Farscape is in imminent danger. Hmm. Doesn't bode very well for Alias then.

Think I will go to bed and watch some late night Friends to put me to sleep (okay, so I taped it earlier so I could watch the film).

Computers and work
Tuesday 15th October 2002 11:41 pm

Haven't written anything for ages! On Thursday I couldn't get online due to my modem/computer dying. I found out at the weekend it was the computer getting confused, poor thing. Then I've just watched loads of Alias really! Apart from Tae Kwon Do last night, which I am only now starting to hurt from. My stomach muscles, which I didn't realise I used ache, specially when I cough or laugh. Which is really helpful. I'm going to get a bruise on my arm where I blocked (sort of) a kick. And my left thumb really hurts, which is just weird.

Really annoyed that a nasty project at work got cancelled just as it was finishing. So I thought that meant I'd have a fairly easy week, as opposed to a bloody awful one. But no. Its actually meant more work. And whats more is that in a few weeks we have to do the entire thing all over again!

My landlady bought a new CD thing, so I've got hers. I didn't realise how many CDs I have. Mind you, two-thirds of them are videos. And I need to make some more as well. Really can't think about much past Michael Vartan at the moment. *sigh*

Lots of things
Wednesday 9th October 2002 10:38 pm

Meant to write in this yesterday, but got tired and went to bed about half ten. Then couldn't get to sleep, so ended up watching a bit of Stargate Director's Cut at quarter to midnight. I have noticed some differences as well. Not entirely certain if they're better or worse yet though. Still totally indecisive about going travelling, hence the not sleeping. I should just see how it goes really, try to do some more IT at work, and if I want to go, it doesn't necessarily have to be next summer. I did realise that I really want to see the Northern Lights (can't spell technical name!). Everything I can pretty much take or leave to be honest. Then I'll have seen just about every stellar phenomena there is.

Been watching loads of Alias recently. I've just realised how good it is. Stupidly went to find some websites and accidentally read some spoilers for episodes I haven't seen yet, which is annoying. But I think some of them won't really make sense until I get to those episodes anyway, and I might well have forgotten them. I found some read hair dye in Boots, that is pretty much the colour I want and only lasts 3 washes, which is good. Unfortunately, you need blonde hair for it to work. Bugger.

Run out of other things to do now! Meant to do some work on my website, but haven't got round to it. Need to stop typing though, hand hurts. Will go and watch Stargate instead maybe (bugger all on TV of course).

Poor hand
Sunday 6th October 2002 11:04 pm

Didn't manage to stay up late to watch Star Trek after Monday because it was just too cold. Hurt my right hand this week by doing loads of writing for work. Halfway through The Bill on Wednesday I had to stop cross stitching because my hand hurt a bit. I had noticed it wasn't too god at work but didn't think anything of it. Until I did some epee Thursday night! Luckily hardly anyone was in on Friday, so I got away with not doing very much work. I had to use my left hand for the mouse and type with my left, which I am quite quick at, but I did get quite frustrated with it though. But every time I used my right hand it hurt too much! I haven't done much with it this weekend, so hopefully it'll be fine for all of Monday.

Went to STA Travel on Saturday. So now I've got all of these brochures and I'm getting quite excited about going. There is the matter of a job when I get back though. I think that if I go next summer, then when I come back I can sort my life out, live somewhere nice and buy a new computer. Not sure. I'm going to talk to people who've done it though, and about what I might need to go into IT. And exactly what I can do in the industry as well. I will have to make a decision soon though. I'm not sure if its possible to spend all that time away and only life on stuff you can carry with you!
