Enterprise rant
Sunday 22nd May 2005 8:32 pm

I have been good and updated my website, and more importantly, written up my Australia diary (beware of loading times, there are 46 photos on that page).

I am confused though, due to watching The OC and Enterprise on a Sunday afternoon (usually while doing other things). From the first episode of The OC, Ryan really reminded me of Trip Tucker. For no reason at all. But when I watch one after the other I can't quite get it into my head which character I'm watching.

I'm also very glad last night's Doctor Who was early because I got to watch it just before I went out. On the one hand I kind of don't want my phone to ring now - last night's episode was a bit scary. But I'd kind of like to ring someone and say 'are you my mummy?'. Which would only work on someone who'd seen it and had the right sense of humour. Or at least, my sense of humour. Which pretty much narrows it down to my dad.

I also have a big Enterprise rant. Or at least, an Enterprise fan fiction rant. NOTE: THIS RANT CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR POTENTIALLY EVERY EPISODE OF ENTERPRISE EVER. See, the thing is I've been reading some Enterprise fic recently (well, Trip/T'Pol) and it hasn't improved. I read some when the series first started and I was disappointed at the quality but it was a new series and a minority ship. So you'd think that four years later and a canon ship would help but it hasn't seemed to. Perhaps I've only found the bad stuff, I don't know, I would love to be disproved on this.

Admittedly, a lot of my problems with it are found generally in ship and slash. There's a lot of cutesy living happily ever after in there that you need a sick bucket to wade through. I checked the Star Trek Encyclopedia (which came free with one of dad's computer magazines) because I felt sure Spock was the first Vulcan-human hybrid and Sarek and Amanda the first inter-species marriage. Except that I couldn't find any evidence for this beyond a post on a message board where someone said that Gene Roddenberry always assumed this to be the case.

So, canon isn't entirely against Trip and T'Pol marrying and living happily ever after, it's just unlikely given the xenophobia on Earth (and Vulcans aren't too keen on hum

TV and Real Life
Sunday 15th May 2005 4:42 pm

I thought last night's Doctor Who was sad, but not sad enough to make me cry. It didn't help that Rose's eyes looked so black I couldn't help but wonder at the amount of make-up she was wearing when I should have really been being sad. And the Doctor's smiles are getting distinctly Avon-esque - I get worried when he smiles now.

I also saw the last ever episode of Enterprise. I got all nostalgic and actually sat through the theme tune without muting it, for possibly the first time ever since they changed it for the beginning of season 3. I enjoyed it, it made me cry. Although whether the episode was any good I can't tell yet - I wasn't expecting to miss Enterprise at all. It didn't help that it managed to make me miss Star Trek. Although as I haven't seen all of the original series, it's not finished yet.

Alias has been interesting although I can't quite work out whether Jack likes Sloane or hates him. It's all got a bit confusing.

Real life

I managed to stay up till 2.30am election night, which was just after my constituency, Mid Dorset and North Poole (I'll have forgotten what it's called in a few months) announced. It's gone from a 392 Lib Dem lead over Conservative to a 5000-odd lead, mostly from Labour. Although it's impossible to tell how much that was people switching allegiance and how much was tactical voting to stop the Tory getting back in.

Interestingly, the constituency I'm actually living in now has a 8000-odd Tory majority over Lib Dem. Up till now Labour and Lib Dem have been equal, but the Lib Dem's edged ahead this time. It will be interesting to see what happens in 4/5 or however many years time.

I also opened my presents and got: rabbit socks, chocolate bunny, rabbit cross stitch, a rabbit hot water bottle type thing and a photo album. And a contribution to my DVD writer, which arrived last week and is very cool. I wrote a CD on it in two minutes. I now have six CD players, three CD writers and three DVD players. And technically, a DVD recorder as I also have a TV card.

I'm in the process of writing up my Australia diary but it's going to take a while, as I also need to sort out the tenses in it, explain a few bits, put it into HTML and sort out some photos to go with it. And find some time to fit that all in.

Enterprise and Money
Friday 4th February 2005 10:27 pm

Enterprise's cancellation is obviously big news - it made my BBC news e-mail and The Guardian. It's not really a surprise though, I can't say I've been rushing to watch it (I will get round to it though, I'm only two episodes behind at the moment). It seems a shame when you compare it to Voyager, which was also crap, but didn't get cancelled. I saw every episode of Voyager - there should be medals for that.

I discovered recently that My Money can tell you all sorts of things about what you're spending your money on. I only started using it so I didn't have to add up all the things I'd spent every month, because it would inevitably go wrong and I'd end up having to do the sums at least three times. So from the beginning of January I started putting all my spending into categories and the results are quite interesting. The only trouble is that it's a bit difficult to write down where all the cash I get out of the hole in the wall goes to. It accounts for my second biggest spending, after rent, but I'm just not sure how to deal with it.

Manic Monday
Tuesday 12th October 2004 9:50 pm

I had a bad day yesterday. I was the first one up and discovered one of my landlady's cat had crapped on the kitchen floor. Despite there being two litter trays in there, and they had access to outside. I'm quite glad I still don't have my sense of smell back.

Then at Tae Kwon Do (I ache after that in parts of my legs I didn't know existed) I got kicked in the throat. Which is really unpleasant. It still feels funny when I swallow sometimes. That became the least of my problems when I got home, though, because I banged my head really hard on the underside of the stairs. My head still hurts, and I'm really hoping concussion won't kick in tomorrow.

And then I got to my room to find my video wasn't recording Spooks (so pressed record, but I had missed the first fifteen minutes). I had a play with it later and found it had recorded over Rosemary and Thyme (taped in case it was the episode they filmed here). Well, actually, the first ten minutes were there. Which I can't make sense of at all.

I had to tell people not to talk about Spooks today at work until I could see it. I did get round to watching the latest Enterprise. Which wasn't as bad as I feared. Still crap, of course, but it could have been worse. Possibly.

I'm also really tired because I keep waking up much earlier than I need to. It doesn't seem to make much difference what time I go to bed, I still wake up after seven hours - and usually at least once in the night as well. I can survive on seven hours sleep but not indefinitely. It's driving me mad.

And my cold's still lingering, which isn't helping my throat because it doesn't like being dry at the moment, but the not being able to smell is quite nice. Or would be if it wasn't for the fact that the only thing I can smell is cigarette smoke. Pleasant.

Sunday 14th September 2003 4:08 pm

I've been spending this weekend getting my life back. I've confused myself by watching series 2 and 4 of The West Wing and have two episodes of Smallville left to go. I've seen the new episode of Enterprise and updated my website. I've looked into moving this blog and decided it was more trouble than its worth. Not least because I've just noticed it's got a spellchecker!

No spoilers in particular but T'Pol actually looks pretty with the new clothes and haircut. I've been reading that TPTB want to do more with Trip and T'Pol which can only be a good thing. Daniel Dae Kim (last seen in Crusade and Angel) gets about a bit. Beyond that it wasn't particularly exciting. I had to get a new version of DivX player to see it. But The West Wing won't play in it, so I have to go back to the old version to watch that. Except that it keeps crashing. *sigh* You just can't win.

In search of T/T
Tuesday 19th November 2002 11:06 pm

Went in search of T/T fic on Fan Went in search of decent Alias fic at the weekend on there. It doesn't improve, it really doesn't. There is some good stuff in there, there's just rather a lot of crap as well. The good thing about the Enterprise section is that you can list the fics focusing on certain characters. I will have to finish working my way through the T/T archive sites instead.

Saw The Road to Perdition tonight, as I was ushering at the cinema. It was good, I was pleasantly surprised. The showed the One Hour Photo trailer as well, which mainly consisted of Robin Williams bits, but Michael Vartan was in there a bit too. Can't decide about his hair in it, but will have to wait till it comes out on video to see it and decide properly, as they're only showing it from tomorrow to Friday and I'm busy on each of those nights.

Monday 18th November 2002 10:20 pm

Work was crap, as per usual. But I did at least avoid insulting too many people very much, which is something at least. Tae Kwon Do was quite good. We did a load of complicated things that I was crap at, although I sort of got the hang of them after a bit. Mind you, just about every one else found them hard as well. I have pretty much got my block sorted out, which is good. I can't do it fast because I need to think about it, but I actually feel like I'm getting somewhere.

I have finally read Differential. I started reading it when it first went up at Fan It turned out so totally different to what I was expecting. And it was quite good. There isn't much Trip/T'Pol stuff out there, especially now TPTB have decided to go with Archer/T'Pol (what were they thinking?) and a lot of it is really quite bad. I think the trouble is writing T'Pol - she's a Vulcan, which is difficult to humans to grasp the intricacies of it, specially when you need her to be doing emotional stuff (like having sexual tension with Trip).

I almost feel protective of the Trip/T'Pol pairing. I think because I spotted it myself without anyone pointing it out to me. I spotted Sydney/Vaughn too, but that one is canon. T/T was at least up in the air for a bit. But we all know she'll get over Archer and realise Trip's the man for her. And he'll realise he's accidentally fallen in love with T'Pol. I mean, come on, they've flirted for goodness sake. Er, except that does tend to mean nothing, at least in my experience. I think the only times I've done it I didn't fancy the bloke in question, just enjoyed flirting with him. And blokes that have flirted with me didn't fancy me. Damn, I'm disproving my own theory here. I think I'd better stop now while I'm not too far behind.

Character analysis
Sunday 17th November 2002 10:36 pm

I'm on a Trip/T'Pol fic reading mission at the moment. I really don't want to go back to work tomorrow. I've been thinking about various characters in TV/Books etc, particularly the ones that everyone likes, so here's my late night analysis (still thinking 10 o'clock is pumpkin time after last week).

Duncan Lennox (The Bill)
I remember my first impressions of Duncan were that he was a nice guy. And he is, its just that putting my finger on exactly why is more difficult. Up until the fire (I'm not talking about post-fire Duncan at all) he had it all. He was married to a woman who worked in the stock market and therefore earned a lot of money. He had a really nice apartment (ie too big to call a flat) overlooking the Thames. And as other people in CID pointed out, he wasn't the one who paid the mortgage. When Liz was sent threatening letters he made sure she was safe by letting her stay at his place (his wife being away at the time). He and Liz always got on well, but then everyone got on with Duncan. I was thinking that he's always happy, but then he has does his fair share of whinging. I think perhaps people like him because he does all the polite stuff, but because he geniunly wants to know, not because he's honest.

Captain Carrot (Discworld)
Terry Pratchett explains it better than I could, I just haven't read any of the relevant books recently. In a way he's a lot like Duncan, in that he's very honest and he will ask people how they are because he wants to know. It helps that he has a good memory, mind you. He has also got the girl.

Trip Tucker (Enterprise)
Trip is slightly different from the other two. He is also honest, but he is more blunt. He says what he thinks, which isn't so good when he's in command of the ship and has to be diplomatic to other species. I'm not so sure everyone automatically likes him, he's had to work at it. Admittedly, a small group of people thrown together with only other species they've just met for companship, disliking anyone on the ship is a bit of a problem. At first Trip has a tendency to rub people up the wrong way, but I think that they get used to his particular brand of 'honesty'. Having said that, the thing he has in common with the other two is that the polite stuff he does is because he wants to know.

Really shouldn't get into all this deep stuff while I'm tired, but if you disagree with any of the crap I just wrote (or if you agree) send me an e-mail. I'm working on getting a comments thing for this.

Davis Cup
Sunday 22nd September 2002 10:57 pm

Good weekend. We won! I got to see British players win a match for the first time! It was quite boring in comparison watching today's winning match, partly because doubles is more exciting - much quicker rallys, involving more volleying - but also because there was more doubt about the result. Although its quite hard to sit in those seats for 4 hours. Watching it on TV afterwards just isn't the same. Why didn't I do this years ago? I am so going back there for the next one (assuming I'm still it the country, February's could be away).

Then got to see the season premiere of Enterprise. Woo hoo! It was so good to see a new episode, and it was good. Watching the one on today, wasn't so good in comparison either. And I slept in till 10 this morning, which I've been wanting to do for ages, but haven't. It comes to something when you think 10 is a lie-in. I need to get less sleep during the week, and maybe I'm make it till lunchtime again.

Going to try Tae Kwon Do tomorrow night, assuming I leave work on time. Have to leave the house when Farscape starts, so I'll be in to press record. I have seen it twice already, so not really needing to see it again that much just at the moment. Specially after seeing new Enterprise, and new Buffy is this week too.
