Fun and games
Saturday 30th July 2011 12:19 pm

I am trying to be back in the real world after a long weekend at the windmill. It was fun, apart from the earwigs in the windmill, the ticks on the walks and the stinging nettles (I got stung, but no ticks - after seeing them on the cat I think I prefer the stinging nettles).

I ended up reactivating my Facebook account (I never completely deleted it because I didn't trust them to delete my data). After the end of Rotaract dinner with people I hadn't seen for years I thought I really ought to keep up with them. And then at the windmill there were people I hadn't seen for a year, so I knew nothing of what had happened to them during that time, but they all knew about each other.

So I ended up going back on Facebook. It looks like I can see all status updates on TweetDeck and post from TweetDeck and I am assured that these days emails to say you have a message tell you what the message is. So I shouldn't have to actually go to Facebook itself. But it is purely a real life thing - I only have Rotaractors and people I knew at uni on there (plus Emma who is the only person from school I still talk to).

And then after that I got curious about Google+. So I used my netbook, where I'm trying out Firefox 4.0. I found that it's much easier to change the privacy settings on Google+ than Facebook. And that's the only thing I've done on either of them really. I don't intend to use Google+ for anything, not least because it seems to have chosen one of my Gmail accounts to associate with my Googld+ account. Which isn't a bad choice, but I wish it had warned me in advance.

On the topic of old friends, I'm off to London this afternoon to meet [info]livii - and [info]shinyjenni and [info]sillycleo too. It's been very handy having people come here, when I can't go anywhere. This year I've also seen [info]selenay936, [info]hhertzof, [info]just_ann_now and [info]munditia and I've only had to go as far as Coventry and London.

Big update
Sunday 30th May 2010 4:28 pm

I haven't updated a while. First I didn't have time and then I didn't want to catch up and then I got dizzy... But these are all the things I might have posted about had I got round to it sometime in the last couple of weeks: Read more...

Pre-Wimbledon update
Sunday 21st June 2009 3:35 pm

Wimbledon starts on Monday! I have my fantasy team assembled, which includes Federer and Murray and an assortment of women who's names I liked, since I know nothing about the women and don't care about them either. I must remember to find my radio from wherever I put it when I moved in six months ago.

After deleting my Facebook account it started sending me notifications. So I had to undelete it to find out what was going on and found that not only had it ticked every notification box but it had also allowed my profile to be seen by everyone! So I reset it, but now I don't trust them to actually delete it, even though it looks as thought they do now, so I haven't. But after fixing all that I see no reason to ever visit the site again.

I had an epiphany about Twitter too and what I actually wanted to use it for. There's loads of people I follow who I'm just not reading and who aren't following me so we can't have a conversation over it and when they post interesting stuff I want to ask about, I can't ask on Twitter. So I have temporarily shunted everyone I don't think I want to read into a column and I'll see if I miss them, or if they've said anything I do want to read in a few days time. But I did discover there's a Wimbledon feed, which is vaguely interesting. There are also feeds for various courts and Henman Hill! Tim Henman has an account he rarely posts to but interesting, Andy Roddick has one that he uses and posts interesting things to as far as I can see. Unlike Andy Murray...

I am looking forward to [info]melliyna coming to visit on Wednesday because I want to see her, but also because it'll be someone to talk to. Blogs and Twitter aren't really the best replacements for a social life. But, I am up to 13 fast on the first exercise. Or I was on Friday - I spent yesterday too tired and dizzy to do anything and today too dizzy to do anything except for the things I really need to get done this weekend.

I was unimpressed to find that Scrabulous on Facebook has been taken away for US and Canadian users. It was even in my BBC News email, which only gives the three top stories in each category. There is a Scrabble application on there, but there are separate ones for North America and the rest of the world. Although I don't know what's to stop anyone from installing both, I haven't tried.

However, it turns out this isn't a problem because it turns out Scrabulous has the same application on their website that not only works all over the world but also emails you when it's your move. Which is a big improvement. So anyone that wants to play with me over there, use my gmail address and I'm up for a game. Let's see if this version gives me consonants even when I'm winning.

Recently I found out what the use of Facebook was - it's the status changes that tell you what people are up to. Like blog posts, but in one sentence. The trouble is, when I go to the 'home' page I can see some status updates but they're buried in among the friend adding and application adding that goes on constantly.

However, it turns out there's an RSS Feed that just gives you your friends' status updates. So now I have that instead of the notifications RSS Feed - because that just told me when someone else had started a Scrabulous game with me, or, really unhelpfully, when I'd started a game with someone else (do they think I didn't notice I did that?).

So what Facebook really need to do now is sort themselves out with RSS Feeds or something to tell you when there are new posts in your groups - just like every other forum out there!

Terrible internet news
Thursday 17th January 2008 8:42 pm

It was in my BBC news email this morning and the Technology section of The Guardian this morning, but Facebook's Scrabulous is under threat. Which is terrible because it's the only reason for Facebook to exist!

The other terrible piece of news is that Pandora is finally US only. Fortunately, when I first heard that it might I copied down the list of songs I'd thumbs upped. I just have to remember where I put it, since that was a while ago now. I was hoping I could get there through a proxy but they either don't load Pandora at all or give a technical error. If anyone has a proxy that will work, please tell the world. In the meantime, I'm playing my mp3s.

Asthma, Facebook, TV
Friday 4th January 2008 11:13 pm

I possibly have the lurgy that's going round. I have really bad asthma. At the moment I think the things that set it off most are heating and cold. I have a cough but that's probably caused by the asthma. I have a sore throat but that's probably caused by the coughing. I have a bit more of a blocked up nose but that's probably caused by the cold. The practical upshot is that I'm not going to be going swimming this weekend. And have an inbox full of emails I haven't had the energy to reply to yet.

I've started playing Scrabble on Facebook, which is possibly the only thing it's useful for. Except that it doesn't send you notifications to tell you it's your go and there's no way to turn it on that I can see. Granted, I have turned off email notifications to everything because they always turned up blank, which was completely pointless. But I have discovered the RSS Feed of my notifications - although RSS Bandit refused to believe it was really an RSS Feed. Yes, my home page is full of crap telling me who got messages and cards and all sorts of stuff I just don't care about. And it also doesn't tell you if any discussions in any groups you're in have been updated and I have better things to do than to check them all by hand.

I have my Channel 4 and Radio 4 working on my TV again! Or at least it looks like it is. The problem is that 850MHz doesn't have a great signal, and that affects all of Channel 4's channels and ITV2, 3 & 4. So I have a couple of boosters which help a lot. The trouble is, they don't like the rain. Or the signal being split. The solution I've found is to unplug the lead to the TV so I can only watch TV through the PVR. Which I do anyway. So basically, my TV might as well not bother having a tuner in it at all.

Radio 1, 2, 3, 4 for some strange reason stopped working. I discovered when I brought up a list of my channels that it's because they're on there twice, once working and once not. I deleted the non-working ones and now it's happy. Bizarrely, looking at my list of TV channels, More4 is on both channel 13 and channel 14. So I deleted one of those and some others that were doubled. So now I just have UK History and Dave on the same channel (12). If I type in 12 I get UK History. One channel up is Dave. Two channels up from channel 12 is channel 13...

A new year
Wednesday 2nd January 2008 8:57 pm

Someone at work summed it up perfectly when he said that the Christmas holidays seemed like such a long time but once we went back to work it seemed like no time at all.

I did get lots of things done over Christmas, which was great. I feel all caught up now.

But then I had to come back. My upstairs neighbours are still away, which normally I'd be happy about, but it just makes my flat feel more quiet and lonely. And the evenings seem so long I don't know what to do with myself. Even though I'd had entire days...

I have started using Facebook to play games, if anyone wants to play any. I have just about everything disabled on it, but have discovered the RSS feed of my notifications, so I might actually know what's going on now.

I decided that I will resolve to leave the house every weekend regardless of whether I have anything planned or for how long. Or have someone round. So anyone who wants to come round at/for the weekend, or wants to meet up, I currently have a relatively empty diary and need to put things in it.

I also need to write a chapter per day on my TARDIS Big Bang fic - starting tomorrow, as I gave myself today off to recover from having to get up early and go back to work.

I don't get Facebook. Every time I think I understand bits of it I find I don't. You have to sign up with your real name, although you could make something up, thinking about it. But then there's more than one person with each name. So when you try to find someone you have no idea whether they're the right one unless they have a photo which you recognise them in. It won't let you see people's profiles unless you're their friend.

Or you're in the same network. But you can only change networks once a month, which isn't terribly helpful for stalker potential. Neither is if they're not in a network. People have told me it's like Friends Reunited only better, in terms of getting in touch with people you went to school with. I use Friends Reunited to find out what the people I hated at school are up to. And generally they're living sad little lives. I can't keep up with them all on Facebook - I don't want them to know I'm stalking them and can't change my network enough.

So I'm kind of thinking of it like a list of people I know and interests. There's no point writing anything on it because that's what this is for. There's no point uploading photos to it because that's what flickr is for. And my website is for anything else. And the wall is like email only requiring more effort.

I've joined groups, mostly when Emma invites me and I just agree to anything on that front. And then I discovered that all sorts of conversations go on on these. You have a news page that gives you all sorts of useless information but not when one of the discussions you're interested in has updated. So it's more useless than RSS Feeds, Message Boards and email.

So I don't just get it. Apart from just agreeing to when anyone friends/requests confirmation/invites me to a group what am I supposed to do with it?
