Commenting on fic
Sunday 14th January 2018 8:03 pm

Last year, as part of Fandom Snowflake (I think) I said I would comment on every fic I read and liked. I did. And now that I've made myself feel like kudosing is lazy, I'm going to continue doing it

It has changed my fic reading habits, though. I do have a tendency not to get round to reading things for a while because I know that if I like it, I'm going to need to comment. So if I don't have the energy for commenting right then, I don't read it.

Initially some of my comments were just "I like this" or something along those lines. But after a while I told myself I have to think of something in particular I like. But how much I comment is less to do with how much I like the fic and more to do with how much time I have and how much I've read.

I always said that kudosing (for me) was like saying "I like this but I don't have anything in particular to say". Except that there have been occasions when I've read something, thought it was all right, but not much more than that. In those instances I might have kudosed it. Now I don't allow myself to use the kudos button. And having discovered that it does mean that in some instances, I now can't use it at all because although the authors might not know how I mean it, I do. And I just don't feel like I can damn them with faint praise.

So continuing commenting it is then.

In unrelated news, the person who wrote the crossposter I'm using suddenly re-appeared after not having done anything to it for years, and updated it to work with Dreamwidth's https. So if you're reading this on Dreamwidth it should be back to normal paragraph gaps again.

Still not gone out
Sunday 23rd October 2016 5:31 pm

I think my cold might finally be getting better. Although this might be because last night I felt awful. And this morning I don't feel like my face is going to explode from the pressure.

It's been frustrating - I thought this week I'd get lots of things done around the house. Maybe even get the spare room cleared so I can get to things. I did drop off a load of stuff at the charity shops, so I can now get to the curtains even with washing drying on the airers in there, which is a definitely improvement. But that's about all I've had the energy to do really. The house needs cleaning and that's not done, but since I'm the only one who'll see it, it can wait.

I had thought about going swimming this weekend, but obviously that's not something you can do with a cold (even if I had the energy to).

But it has been nice to just sit on the sofa, play on the internet, watch TV and read, and have it feel like it was endless. It's not though: I have to go back to work tomorrow.

In amongst that I've been enjoying writing. It makes a change not to be trying to fit it in around everything. The evenings that I'm in I only have about an hour free, in between dinner and Missy. So I can either write or watch TV or read forums or reply to emails etc. It's pretty much just one of those and not all. Then at weekends I try to get a lot of other stuff done. I used to sit down in the evenings and write then, but that doesn't work so well now I have Missy.

Although it doesn't feel like I've been productive, because I'm still living in a bit of a mess, I have got myself ahead on Public Call and Yuletide. If I can get them (mostly) done before things get busy in the evenings (the week after next - everything stops for half term next week) and before things get busy at work (late November, probably) then I won't have to worry about them when I don't have time to do them. And will maybe have more time for treats when things calm down (about a week before Christmas).

Not going out
Friday 21st October 2016 7:23 pm

This week I am on holiday from work. I haven't gone away anywhere, the plan was to go out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and stay home and recover/get things done the other days.

It started out well: Monday we went to Windsor Castle, which was good, but tiring. Tuesday I got a cold, but was still going. Wednesday we got up early to do a tour of the Bodleian Library (very interesting) and Oxford Castle (fun!).

Thursday my cold was worse, today it's even worse and since my friend is also ill, we ended up not going anywhere today. Being ill on holiday is crap because I'm not going anywhere and I'm not getting a lot done. But it beats working, which would just wear me out more.

Being in today meant I got some writing done. I have more words on my Yuletide fic, although some of them are: stuff goes here. I did some canon review for my Public Call fic and have written the first draft. And I finished off my DW Minor Characters ficathon fic:
At Last a Dragon (983 words) by paranoidangel
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: John Chesterton, Tenth Doctor
Summary: John Chesterton doesn't believe in Father Christmas, the Tooth Fairy or the Doctor.

(And yes, I did steal the title from an episode of Press Gang)

Sunday 12th September 2010 4:39 pm

I've been meaning to post for days but have been distracted by too little sleep and a kitten. These things are mostly related.

I'm having a week's holiday from work at my parents with the new kitten. Who is mad. He was scared of me at first, but this morning, just after I'd caught up on my sleep and then stayed up late listening to the tennis, he wanted to play with me at 7am. Whereas I wanted to sleep... But I have been putting up photos of him on flickr. Basically, he's small, sweet, talkative and a complete pest. Whatever's going on, he wants to be in.

In between playing with the kitten I have read the latest Discworld book, I Shall Wear Midnight, which was good. And I've been reading lots of LOTR fic. Well, lots of Elrond fic, to be specific. I'm on the MEFA nominees that haven't been self-nominated now. I intend to write some reviews, but then I intended that the first year they ran and I still haven't written any...

At some point I will write some fic. But I looked through my archive and I have written a lot of drabbles. So I really want to write stuff that isn't drabbles. And I've decided to take this month off to do other stuff, like go through my bookshelves and get rid of some rubbish because I know the telephone manual is there, I just can't find it. And play some games - I've played a bit of The Fellowship of the Ring the Lego Harry Potter so far. I like that the former is third person but has a first person option. The latter is a bit of a pain because it doesn't recognise the mouse, and I'm used to using it to move with.

TGI the weekend
Thursday 9th April 2009 9:30 pm

I was going to write something exciting, but I got bogged down in Conference stuff and lost the will to live a little bit. So instead I'm going to finish off my packet of smarties (they're pretend smarties, so they come in packets, not tubes) and watch some more stuff off my PVR.

But I wanted to say that I got a fantastic fic in the TARDIS Gen ficathon: The Inestimable Value of a Good Pair of Shoes which stars Harry.
