Atlantis ship names
Thursday 5th January 2006 10:17 pm

Something that occurred to me ages ago but I had forgotten all about until I was surfing around and was reminded about. In Atlantis, Sheppard/Weir is also known as Sparky, to save it being Shweir *sudder* Those sort of names are only good when they're funny (like McShep, which I find funny for some reason).

Only trouble is, Sparky is one of Rygel's nicknames in Farscape, given to him by Crichton. So I think all the ships should have a Rygel nickname. There's even a site with them all listed: Crichtonisms ( could only remember four: Sparky, Spanky, Buckwheat and Napoleon XVI). Maybe if we run out, we can go for other character's nicknames, there must be more than there are pairings, even when you get to multi-ones.

This did completely confuse me the other day when I was reading sga_newsletter and they mentioned a new community with spanking in the name. It was referring to, you know, spanking. Except that my first though was 'ooh, I wonder what pairing that is.'

Monday 2nd January 2006 2:07 pm

I got all excited when I came to post yesterday, as I discovered a new version of WordPress is out, and some of the new features look really useful. Except then I found that Live+Press doesn't work with it, and since that's the plugin I use to automatically post my posts to Livejournal, it's a bit useless without it. Although having said that, it does keep thinking I want to post with my Atlantis OTP icon, rather than my default, and yesterday it decided not to post at all, which I'm hoping is just a hiccup.

I've just decided what train I'm going to get home. I'm so looking forward to going back to a cold, dark and noisy house and going to work tomorrow.

On the plus side, the 2005 Shelly Award results are up, so now I have lots of Farscape music videos to download.

Farscape again and some other stuff this time
Thursday 21st October 2004 9:49 pm

I'm feeling slightly more rational about Farscape now. There was an excellent homage to 2001 in the last twenty minutes. So much so (and bearing in mind we're talking about my favourite film here) that I have no idea what happened in that scene. Except there wasn't enough breathing. It did remind me that I really want 2001 on DVD, but then it would also require a big widescreen TV and surround sound to watch it properly, so no rush.

I can't help wondering how different the mini series would have been if it had been a whole series. And whether it would have been better or worse. But what really clinched it was when I watched last night's Bill earlier and it was a two sick bucket job, at the end. And let's not even mention the whole of the rest of the episode. I should watch tonight's but I've finished my cross stitch, and I can't watch another episode without one, I'll get too bored. Mind you, I'm really tired from going to bed really late all week, so I might be in the right state of mind for it.

I spotted our next Davis Cup match is before I go to Australia, but it's in Israel, which is no help. I hope we get through it and get a World Group qualifying match at home.

I won a packet of jaffa cakes in a raffle last night. Well, I got to pick the prize, but frankly everyone in the room was eyeing them up, so we shared them amongst the club. We also came fourth in the quiz, which was fairly respectable, although Langley and Iver beat us again, annoyingly.

Half term started today. We're on the new six term system, which I forget how it works now, except that half terms are longer, summer holidays are shorter and all terms are six weeks, regardless of when Easter is. What it meant was there was no-one around when I walked to work today. Which only goes to show how much of the rush hour traffic is school-related (although this is only a market town, so rush hour pretty much means there are cars on the road. Apparently this wasn't the case before they built the bypass).

Ever since the article in the Guardian Online the other week about workplace bloggers I've been reading two of them that particularly interest me:
The Policeman's Blog - who has some good advice about how to deal with crimes and the police, and lots of stuff about what really goes on
and Doing Less Harm - who works in IT in the NHS. Today's entry in particular made me laugh, because I come up against similar stuff myself.

Blogger is being really slow and annoying me, and I really need to sleep. I stayed up late to watch new Farscape and I really wished I hadn't. But not in the way I thought I would. If I'd stopped watching about twenty minutes before the end I would have been fine. I was warned that the last 5 or 10 minutes were cheesy, but actually, the last 20 you need a sick bucket for. In fact, a fair bit of the John/Aeryn stuff in part two required one.

I was thinking yesterday, after I'd seen part one, how I really want it on DVD when it comes out. Although I at least now know which bits to skip, I suppose.

Two cool links: Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars Trailer. Very exciting. I just hope that the BBC show it, and after 9pm. It's not a children's program, BBC, take note.

I have also just found some of the Orange adverts they show at the cinema to remind you to turn off your phone. These are usually someone pitching a film and the Orange guys ruining it by putting mobile phones in it. You can't get to the Clockwork Orange advert for Orange Wednesdays but the Lord of the Ringtones one is there (generally agreed to be the best one so far, it even stands up to multiple viewings).

Harry Potter
Saturday 5th June 2004 8:56 pm

I finally got to see Harry Potter today. I can't believe it's only been out six days and it seems like everyone has seen it already. I'm most upset they've changed the uniforms. Okay, so it's nice to watch it without cringing but my Harry Potter scarf is no longer a Harry Potter scarf!

My external hard drive no longer works. I eventually got hold of a cable the right size at both ends and it still doesn't work. Which is not good because I have all my videos on it - the ones I haven't managed to put on CD yet.

On a better note, there are pictures from Farscape:Peacekeeper War (ie the mini-series).

Friday 4th April 2003 11:29 pm

Yay at Blogger! We'll see how long it lasts though. I'm up to 650meg for my CD of mp3s. A few of those need re-downloading though. I'm running out of things I can think of to download (although there are some things I want that I'm not quite so desperate for, so maybe a second CD at some point). Can't listen to Bohemian Rhapsody without thinking of the dirty version though - at least the bits I can remember. Have completely failed to make it to bed before 12.30 any night this week. And I have to get up at 9 tomorrow morning.

My books have arrived! Only took a week. So I've been reading the latest Jedi Quest book. It's nice to get back to TPM after I've been reading practically nothing but LOTR. Can't help feeling I should write some Obi-Wan & Ani stuff. It's interesting looking at the two of them together. Obi-Wan's trying to be more like Qui-Gon, but is actually more like Anakin. So it's kind of a case of 'do as I say, not as I do'. But Obi-Wan/Anakin slash? Ugh! And ew! Despite the fact they're closer in age, I'm happier with Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan. Not that I see their relationship like that, but I think it easier to deal with slash when the two characters already love each other.

I can just about cope with Elladan/Elrohir, as nasty as that is. But sometimes Aragorn/Arwen can squick me if I think about it too much - they both think of Elrond as their father, that's just weird. Have worked out how to use Scorpius/Braca in the unnamed-Farscape-epic. In fact, I think it'll solve some of my plotting problems. Should maybe start writing them down. I was thinking about the number of pairings in it, and as well as the aforementioned S/B, there's John/Aeryn and Crichton/Chiana. Also Chiana/D'Argo and Chiana/various Peacekeepers I suspect. That gives me an idea - Crichton/Peacekeeper red-shirt. Must go and read now.

The William Shatner Acting Simulator is so funny. You click on buttons to get him to say random words (complete with silly actions) and it makes a sentence the same way the real one does! That picture of Aragorn from my last post is a very nice one. Can't write much because I keep looking at it, and also because I'm cold. Might have to go to bed to watch something.

Farscape - they're not dead, I tell you! Denial is not just a river in Africa - not least because they had plans for a fifth series and didn't get any time to change the last episode. So there.

Smoking rant
Tuesday 4th March 2003 7:50 pm

I would update my template to put March's archives on there, but sadly, Blogger can't find it. Which isn't very helpful really. I want Blakes 7 on DVD. Having said that, the videos of people who buy it on DVD, not least as it'll be cheaper. I can't remember which series 2 episodes it is I've missed and I can't remember the ones I have seen very well. I only have 6 episodes of series 4 to go though.

General smoking rant: actually I'll cut it short and just go why? and attempt to answer my question.
I can't say I've done extensive research on this, nor can I prove it with statistics or a pretty graph but, smoking is inversely propoertional to intelligence. In other words, only thick people smoke. I have learned this through observation. The explanation: what a bloody stupid way to kill yourself. Smells horrible, kills you slowly, annoys everyone else while simultaneously killing them (slower) as well. Hmm, perhaps there's a conspiracy at work here.
Solution: Add something into cigarettes to make everyone who smokes them sterile. Then they won't have kids who grow up thinking smoking is normal, plus the average intelligence will go up. Problem solved!

Scorpius/Sikozu makes me go *bleurgh* the idea of Scorpius/Braca is not so bad though. Not sure why.

Monday 27th January 2003 11:47 pm

I thought of all these things to write in here this afternoon, as I didn't have much work on and now I don't remember any of them. I think last night's Alias (in America) was big. I don't know why, I don't even remember the episode name and I don't want to know whats going on till I see it. Preferably soon! Fight scenes on Buffy are very weird when the picture is 8 seconds behind the sound. And Angel was gone for so long I'm trying to remember whats going on. I don't think its as good as Buffy, but then I have just seen the 12th of Buffy and the 8th of Angel, so perhaps I shouldn't judge.

Would anyone like to explain tonight's Farscape? I knew it wasn't Aeryn, given the amount of shapeshifting they'd been showing us, but does that meant there's more than one Grayza? Was the one we saw the real one? My video ran out half way through so I can't re-watch it either. Should have put a new one in. Never mind. 6 episodes to go. Ever. Thats quite a scary thought. Specially as we still don't know whats going on this series!

I changed my alarm clock to match the other ones - I got tired of looking at it and having to subtract 2 minutes to find out the time. Strangely, the fact that my clock never says the right time doesn't bother me. Anyway, despite the fact that I'm sure I only changed the minutes, I thought it was midnight when I went to bed (which was annoying as I wanted to go to bed early) and noticed that my clock said eleven. As did my video when I checked. Good thing I did, otherwise I'd have got up at quarter to 7 and probably not noticed. Then I couldn't get to sleep, despite being completely knackered on the way home, so gave up at midnight and read a bit.

Won a fight at the county competition yesterday! I think the other person got 7 or 9, I can't remember. And I lunged. And slid as well, but hit her. So I'm not quite so bothered about my right leg hurting today. I think I've got my chest bruised as well. I think it must be just above my chest protector. Really wish the free version of Blogger had a spell checker cos I'm too tired to check this.

Thursday 23rd January 2003 6:31 pm

I was in the queue in the newsagents at lunch and a woman carrying a couple of books joined it behind me (why on earth would you buy books there? they're so expensive). I say behind me, it was more to the side really. While the slightly incompetent woman was looking for my magazine I noticed out of the corner of my eye she was looking at the cigarette display behind the counter and shaking, like drug addicts who need a fix do on The Bill.

I thought it was just my imagination, but as I turned to go I discovered that she smelt of cigarette smoke. And when I say smelt, I mean worse than anyone else I've smelt it on. And that's saying something. It was almost as if someone had lit one and blew the smoke into my face it was that powerful. I didn't stay long enough to find out if she bought any. But I'd say its a fairly safe bet to assume she did.

Have put paragraphs in this time 🙂

My dream last night had Gandalf in it. Which isn't really unusual given that I'm working my way through the DVD and the book. I'm not sure I ever read the prologue (concerning hobbits) before, so that was really interesting stuff. What was unusual was that the Gandalf in my dream was the Bagenders version. Legolas was mentioned, something to do with singing, although I never got to see any of it. Which was probably just as well really.

Farscape on Monday was really good. I felt guilty for suspecting D'Argo partway through, but the stuff with him in it was quite gripping. The mental guy I could have done without and I can't work out what Scorpy's game is at all. The BBC Cult site on the other hand, hated it. Which is the exact opposite to Stargate.

I taped The Bill last night to watch Stargate as it sounded quite good from the description in the TVQuick. Sadly, it was another clip show and by the time I realised I had missed too much of The Bill to watch that instead. It was worse than the other clip show, Politics, which at least had the redeeming feature of
a) having the cast in it and
b) it was hard to disagree with Kinsey's conclusions.
This time though, we all knew he was up to something in advance, they shouldn't have bothered trying to pick a few countries (everyone can find at least one to object to not being there). Thor was good, but a tad ridiculous. And there were people on the UK-SG1 list who liked it. Were they watching the same episode as me? Watching it live wasted an hour as well, as opposed to 40 minutes if I'd just downloaded it in the first place. (I'd have got further through the writers commentary as well)

Tuesday 14th January 2003 7:48 pm

I have now watched every documentary on the Lord of the Rings DVDs. And I worked out how to get to the Two Towers trailer. I found a really funny set of fics yesterday - Bagenders. Its a cross between LOTR, The Young Ones and Father Ted. Its one of the few stories that have made me laugh out loud, the others being The Sith Academy (where Darth Maul is given menial rage-honing tasks to do by his master, Darth Sidious) and Daniel Jackson's Diary (similar to Bridget Jones's Diary).

I wasn't that impressed with Farscape last night. The story's been done before (Polymorph springs to mind for a start) and the ending seemed a bit contrived. The writers probably had it mind the whole time, but it doesn't explain why he doesn't tell her earlier. And Scorpius gobs in his eye. Ugh. He gets more gross with each episode.

Wife Swap
Tuesday 7th January 2003 10:16 pm

Further Farscape thought - if it is 2003 in last week's ep and Christmas in this, is it set now(ish) or a year in the future?

Watched Wife Swap - the idea is that the wife in two families live in the other's house with their husband and kids. They live by the household rules for the first week and set their own for the second. It was so funny. I still find it quite odd when the bloke does stuff like cooking and cleaning cos Dad's completely useless. How he survived till he met mum I don't know. But having seen it I can quite easily say that if I ever decided to live with a bloke he would so be doing half the work. I thought I was into cleanliness but one of those sets of people were really OTT about it. Although I'm don't do nearly as much as my mum, I wouldn't clean every week for a start. Although my room does seem to last a few weeks of me looking at it and thinking about cleaning it. In my defence I'm not in much and I really can't clean any time except first thing.

Tuesday 17th December 2002 10:44 pm

I'm gradually adding more blogs to my collection of ones I read. I will update this page at some point to put them along the top. Annoyingly there's one I can't seem to get to here (I tried twice yesterday and it crashed ie twice), but there was a recommendation for a Farscape music video there which was Right Here, Right Now. If you've never seen the video to the song then its kind of a history of the species. The Farscape version is kind of a history of Farscape and its really cool.

I watched Celebrity Wheelchair Challenge on Channel 4 this evening, which was really interesting. The idea was that three celebrities would spend a couple of days in a wheelchair. They had specific places to get to and they all had such problems. It really showed what life was like for disabled people, wheelchair users in particular. It also makes me really grateful that however crap I think life is, at least I'm not disabled.

I did three CDs at work today. For some strange reason it will write on the 32x CD-Rs at 40x, but only 32x on the 40x CDs. In what world does that make sense? The faster ones are at least bigger and its not actually that much slower. I took the time to write down some plot for my planned Farscape epic and a few things about it sprung to mind. So I now pretty much have the backstory down, I just have to think about whats going to happen and where the story will start and finish. At the moment I can see three possible endings:

  1. They win and everyone lives happily ever after
  2. They lose and everyone dies
  3. They win one battle but are left at the end to carry on fighting the war

I can see the picture of Trip in the bottom half of this window as I write this and my eyes keep straying!

Monday 16th December 2002 10:05 pm

Actually kind of bored tonight, as I didn't go to Tae Kwon Do because my asthma's not totally better and I didn't want to risk it. Tonight's Farscape was weird. According to TVQuick it was called Unfazed Reality. One word out of two ain't bad. It does set up the rest of this series to change. A lot. Not only do we have to wait two weeks to see it, but I won't be in for it. Or any of the rest as I leave for Tae Kwon Do after the first five minutes. But for this one I'm going to the Star Trek Adventure. Which should be quite cool. Or at least it had better be the amount of money they're charging for the privilege!

This site is so funny.

Farscape fic
Tuesday 3rd December 2002 10:58 pm

Reading this at the moment. Its a Farscape fic based on what might have happened if Tauvo Crais had been on Moya and Aeryn had hit the module, but missed the asteroid. Its good so far, but also very long. I'm still reading part 1 out of 3 very long and one shorter part. The Farscape fics I've started are probably the closest to being finished, so I need to get into Farscape at the moment. Looking forward to the weekend - off to The Bill studios then going to see Rocky Horror. And its going to get colder, which is great when I'm going to be spending lots of time outside.

Bond fencing!
Monday 2nd December 2002 7:52 pm

Saw Die Another Die today. Very interesting fencing kit Madonna's wearing. But the rest of it was so white! I know thats because its new (and expensive) but even so. And I liked the way Bond was magically hooked up to the electronics.

The definitely cut a bit out of Farscape. When they're in the doctors office and D'Argo is feeling Noranti's 'intense pleasure' he goes towards Crichton, who tells him not to come near him when he's feeling like that. I remember it as well. Only one more episode, then we'll be ahead of the Americans, yay!

Have actually updated my website, must upload it, write an e-mail to the mailing list and update my bookmarks as well - I'm getting to the point where I can't see all of them any more.

Farscape Cancellation!
Sunday 8th September 2002 8:26 pm

Really must post more often - so much has happened!

Still in a bit of a state of shock, Farscape has been cancelled (see for the chat transcript). As they finish filming season 4 on Tuesday, we'll get a cliffhanger ending, as usual. The Sci-Fi Channel says it has low ratings, but thats because they've treated it so badly. On the plus side, I won't miss any of it while I'm away (every cloud has a silver lining).

I now have something to read as Judith's finished the Stargate story she's been talking about. I'm trying to save it for next weekend, but I've already skimmed through the first 2 pages (whoops!). I have no willpower. I've been introduced to Highlander as well, which isn't a good thing. Although that could well have something to do with the silly comments we were all making through the episodes, as I've not been terribly impressed with it before. Mind you, I don't like Duncan McCloud, he's boring. Methos is interesting though, and Peter Wingfield. And Tracy Scoggins sounds completely different from when she was in Babylon 5.

So looking forward to going back to work tomorrow to fix the printer, which made me late on Friday, so I didn't get home till 10pm (if I leave on time I can be there by 8.30 cos the trains work out better then).
