Emails, Rotaract and TV
Wednesday 2nd August 2006 7:26 pm
I've been trying to keep on top of my emails this week, yet they never seem to go down much. There's a few people I've been meaning to email for months and still haven't got round to.
I was going to say that I've done Rotaract stuff every night this week but since last night's consisted of going down the pub, that probably doesn't count.
I have spent most of the day keeping up with a thread on sarahjane_fic about a rumour for a Sarah Jane spin-off that was in the Outpost Gallifrey news feed this morning, so that kept the day interesting. I do seem to be working my way through friending most of the members of the comm, though, which I'm trying to keep down because otherwise my Feeds list just gets out of hand.
Tonight, though, I am having a TV night. With emailing and Rotaract stuff in between. Tonight they're repeating the first part of Three Men in a Boat that I didn't see the first time round. The second part I watched because they went through the town I live in. It's almost appropriate it's being repeated because in the book the only disease he doesn't diagnose himself with is housemaid's knee, and mine is playing up at the moment for no particular reason, and really isn't liking stairs.
I remember in an interview Tom Baker said he hated having to kneel down to K9 because he didn't want to get housemaid's knee. Which leads me nicely into the other thing I'm watching tonight which is the Hand of Fear DVD commentary, in my amazon rentals 'due out on 25th July month'. The other two DVDs in the month are Drop the Dead Donkey series 4, the first one of which turned out to feature the one episode I remember - where Dave pretends to be Helen's girlfriend because she doesn't want to tell them she's gay. But now because I've seen earlier stuff, and in order, I know what else is going on because Dave is in love with Helen.
I was thinking at some point this week I might do some writing. Um, maybe tomorrow.

Catching up
Monday 24th July 2006 9:42 pm
How did it get to be 10.30? I'm sure it was 9pm a minute ago.
So, what have I done recently? The Saturday before last was where it all started. I was at a Rotaract thing and they had a kid's wooden climbing thing. And a seesaw. So at lunchtime I'd been on the seesaw, then thought I'd go up the climbing thing so I could go across the wooden bridge and down the slide. Except that I climbed up a selection of horizontal logs which necessitated me looking down at them and therefore I didn't see the one at the top painted with red and white stripes and consequently hit it with my face. Quite hard. My bendy glasses were not that bendy, I cut my top lip and worst of all bruised my nose where my glasses sit and behind my ear where my glasses sit. And possibly my forehead.
So after that I started feeling tired and dizzy, which wasn't really a good sign. As I had a driving lesson the next morning I ended up speaking to four different nurses. NHS Direct decided that because I couldn't concentrate and my memory wasn't great I should go to A&E or have someone with me. So I called a friend of mine who lives round the corner, who happened to be a nurse. She made me ring the out of hours doctor, who turned out to be a nurse. She recommended I go to the Minor Injuries Unit, which was a whole lot emptier than A&E. Fortunately, my friend's mum drove me there. The nurse there eventually concluded that I either had a mild concussion or was coming down with something and it might have gone by the morning.
Turned out to be flu and I could have skipped the whole thing.
So, anyway, I spent a week desperately trying to cool down (eventually discovered a cold flannel on the face and feet is fantastic) and watching & listening to lots of Doctor Who and some Avengers.
The first Avengers on the DVDs had Steed and Peel fencing at the beginning. Which was partically him trying to convince her to go to Little Bazeley-by-the-sea and also so he could have cream in his tea. Then they had a wonderful scene on the train where they had to 'rough it' due to there being no restaurant car, at which point Steed had a definite Mary Poppins bag, the number and size of things he pulled out of it.
I also saw Carnival of Monsters, which is a Third Doctor and Jo episode, and a good one as well. I discovered the commentary was quite handy for lying down with your eyes closed too.
So then this weekend I've been feeling better, so spent it catching up, and I've just done, in time for doing a whole load more Rotaract things tomorrow in preparation for tomorrow's meeting.

Is it winter yet?
Wednesday 19th July 2006 11:31 am
Not only is it far too hot but I also have flu. For the third time this year, I think. My immune system is not good. The really annoying part is that if I was at work I'd be sitting in a cold air conditioned office, rather than lying on a hot bed, heating my computer up by watching lots of Doctor Who.
Although I have now watched lots of Jon Pertwee, who I think I actually like better than Sylvester McCoy's Doctor.
DCI Burke from Taggart was in POTC last night (lovely cold cinema) which was slightly surreal. I loved the wheel fight towards the end but overall it wasn't as good as the first one.

I feel quite shit
Monday 12th June 2006 7:29 pm
I've gone off this driving thing - my left leg hurts. And by hurts I mean the muscle is really painful even when I'm not using it. And what doesn't help is that because it was hot last night when I went to bed I decided to leave the window open a bit. Which turned out to be a really bad idea because not only could I not sleep because the bed didn't get cold enough but I also couldn't sleep because my eyes felt all funny and my nose was horrid. Tonight I have put the bunny in the freezer, so I can freeze my feet off instead. I really need it to rain quite a bit and do something about all this pollen.
Three people have posted their stories for the Doctor Who Fic Fest already, including Always which is for my Sarah & Harry audio request. I vaguely know how mine starts but still don't have any sort of plot yet.
The long one I'm writing (working title: Sarah Jane drinks lots of tea*), I'm still partway through version 2 of. Except that last night I added a new bit of the plot in, as when I read it through I realised I'd laid down loads of clues but not explained anything. Mostly because I still hadn't decided exactly whodunnit. But now it has added Tenth Doctor and Rose in it.
And now the sun's going down it's getting cooler - my computer's fan has even gone off! - so I might actually be able to stay in the vicinity of my computer to actually do some work on it.
I have also discovered the usefulness of Word. And by Word, I mean word processing packages that are more word processy than WordPad and are not Word. If you type teh it changes it to the! If you don't quite hit the shift key at the beginning of a sentence it capitalises it for you! And you can see how many pages you've done, which is very cool. My only trouble now is deciding whether I want to use Word Pro or Open Office. Oh, decisions, decisions.
* I counted and in the first draft she explicitly drinks six cups, in 11,000 words.

Mostly Doctor Who
Sunday 2nd April 2006 5:50 pm
I can't believe it's the evening already. Although possibly that's because I only just had lunch. I slept for 11.5 hours last night. I'm nearly recovered from the flu but still a bit tired!
Dad told me about The Guardian's April Fool which was about Coldplay's Chris Martin supporting David Cameron. It's really impressive - they redid the song 'Talk' and everything.
The BBC have put the new Doctor Who series trailer up. I'm guessing from the ending of it it's on TV too, but that assumes I watch any I would be all excited about it, if it wasn't that I have to wait until I get back from the Lake District to see it - and they'll have shown two episodes by then.
I watched a Peter Davison story yesterday. It could be due to seeing Christopher Timothy in Doctors this week, but I had to keep reminding myself that he was the Doctor. Although at the end, for some reason, I couldn't get over how young he looked.
I also listened to a Big Finish CD. When I was in Bournemouth I was ambushed by Sophie Aldred being on a free CD with Doctor Who magazine. I'm glad I bought it though, because it was a good story. The Doctor wasn't in it at all, it was just Five's companions, Peri and Erimem, and Seven's Ace and Hex. I really liked Ace and Hex in it, they were funny. Peri I've heard in one other and not seen at all, and Erimem I'd never heard of before, but I really liked them too.
Some people also have Tom Baker 'singing' Common People. Having listened to it I can't help agree with Sel that he would be a bit much for a SatNav. But as cool as it is having John Cleese direct you (which my sister does), it would be very cool to have the Doctor do it.

A good similie goes a long way
Thursday 30th March 2006 9:53 pm
I feel like I've been on a ten mile run while weighlifting, and stopped by running face first into a wall. Note to self: don't go to work with flu. I bet I don't even give it to anyone.

Concussion
Sunday 27th April 2003 10:08 pm
I meant to write something in here ages ago, but then I got concussion. Self-inflicted as well. I spent the whole weekend (and Friday) trying to think of what to write for this weeks Farscape Drabble. Just managed to write something (although it's currently only 96 words). I won't get it posted on time though as it will need revising and that will have to come tomorrow. I really haven't done anything to write about in the past week and my short-term memory's gone, so I really can't get anything coherent written down. Really must go to bed as I have to get up early tomorrow for work. Only 5 more days to go and then 3 off. Woo hoo!
