Fandom Questions Meme

The last set!

43. What ship do you feel needs more attention?
I want to say, all the really tiny ones that have very few fics, but I have a tendency to get into ships because they're tiny and have very few fics. So perhaps the answer should be none of them

46. Archive Of Our Own, Dreamwidth, LiveJournal, or Tumblr - where do you prefer to post and why?
My website, for everything. Stories of Arda for LOTR stuff, Teaspoon for Doctor Who stuff, Wraithbait for Stargate Atlantis stuff, Archive of Our Own for exchange stuff because I have to, and rare stuff which people are unlikely to look anywhere else for. I stopped posting on a very long time ago because it meant having to format everything differently and I seem to remember you had to upload a whole file, you couldn't just paste in the text.

I stopped crossposting from my site to LJ and DW a while back, when DW went https and the crossposter stopped working, on the basis that the only people following the LJ one don't use LJ any more and no one was following the DW one. So it was the simplest way to fix the crossposting problem.

I have a Tumblr account, but I don't log into it, it's just a copy of the Tumblrs I'm reading by RSS. And my Tumblrs, I mean Clients From Hell.

47. Do you leave reviews when you read fanfiction? Why/Why not?
I'm assuming that by reviews it means comments. In which case, I do. For everything that I get to the end of and like. I started doing this years ago, when I was in LOTR fandom, then got out of the habit when AO3 made it easier to just press the kudos button instead. I got back into writing comments instead a year and a half ago.

I don't remember why I did originally, but I remember being persuaded by some reasoning, I forget which. When stuff was posted on LJ it was good for getting a conversation going (sometimes - fics didn't always lead to that). But AO3 is an archive not a discussion (at least that's how it feels to me). It just feels normal to me, that if I liked a fic I read, I say so.

48. Do you care if people comment/reblog your writing? Why/why not?
I'm interpreting this question on people commenting on my fic. If they're reblogging it something has gone wrong somewhere. I like people to comment - if they liked it. If they hated everything about it then I'm happy for them to keep it to themselves. It's just nice to know that someone other than me has read it and liked it.

49. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?
I don't really remember. I remember being in the Bugs fandom and I feel like I must have written fic, but I don't think I did. I just remember wishing I was interested enough in the post-series 4 fanfics to read them because I'd have liked the cliffhanger resolved. Whether I read anything in it before then I don't know. I mostly just visited the locations and took photos.

I think it was in the Star Wars TPM fandom, in the day of mailing lists seeing other people's fic and reading a lot of it that made me think I could write it too.

50. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!
Not a massive rant, really, but I hate that exchanges have got so big and there isn't much in the way of fests, where you can sign up to write whatever you like, rather than for someone else. I feel like there used to be more prompt fests. But, of course, it's always possible that they're going on elsewhere and if they're not advertised on Fandom Calendar then I wouldn't know they exist.

To balance it out, on the love side, I like that fanfiction can give you more of the thing you like. Because there's never enough of the thing I like! And it can go places where the original canon couldn't. You can kill people off, you can resurrect them, you can change an event and explore the consequences.

Fandom Questions Meme
Friday 13th April 2018 9:00 pm

I skipped some questions that are just not applicable. These are all apparently supposed to be about my current fandom, but since everything is current I just answered generally.

18. What ship have you written the most about?
Sarah/Harry, for which I have written 21 fics. Next highest is Ian/Barbara at 13. Nothing else gets into double figures. It doesn't surprise me, I wrote a lot of Sarah/Harry back in the day. There's a lot of unrequited shipping on Harry's side, but not so much on Sarah's side (in fact, I don't remember any). So that's still something I want to write.

19. Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?
I'm not sure why this question says them - I'm sure it should be it. But regardless, I don't think there are any. There are ships that I hate that are big or hate the way they're written as fluffy when they should be complicated, but that includes ones I ship as well as ones I don't.

20. Any ships which you surprised yourself by liking?
Yes, a few. Missy/Master, because I never thought I'd like any pairings involving the Master. Thirteen/Missy because I don't ship the Doctor. Although I think it's because we haven't seen the Thirteenth Doctor yet. I suspect that once we do, I might go off it. Or not, who knows. Riker/Crusher, because I am very pro-Riker/Troi and I couldn't see it at all, until someone requested it in an exchange and their prompt convinced me.

Fandom Questions Meme
Wednesday 21st March 2018 8:04 pm

This seems like the sort of unimportant thing I feel like talking about today.

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?
The Bill. When we first got the internet in 1996 I came across the official site and the forum. And then when they changed the forum design and decided I'd come back when they put it back to how it was... I forget when I did go back, but it was after I had a pseudonym to use on the internet. I only left when MikeB's site shut down (it had become the alternative forum when the official site got rid of its forum).

2. What is your latest fandom?
It's a toss-up between Carry On (Simon Snow) and Victoria (Drummond/Alfred). With the former I wrote a fic for Yuletide and I have been reading some fic. I keep meaning to read more but there never seems to be the time and I am really behind on B2MeM reading. With the latter I got into it late last year when I watched the second series of Victoria quickly before the Christmas special. I have written a couple of fics and started reading most of the fics on AO3, but they're pretty much all terrible (like missing capital letters, missing punctuation levels of terrible). Judging by the author's notes, I am not touching the fandom beyond that with a bargepole.

If I count things where I've read or written at one fic but nothing else, then I could also count Daisy Dalrymple, Taskmaster, Discovery and Belinda Blnked. I don't know what the bar is for saying you're in a fandom.

3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?
I think it would be The Bill. I'm still friends with people I met in that fandom and they live on the other side of the world. It was when first used a chatroom (on the official site) - we used to have chats at 12pm on Sundays and after an hour the UK people would go to lunch and the Australians to bed.

And I enjoyed what we called London Trips. They started off as trips to the studio, to hang around outside and accost actors and crew, and then go to the pub. As time went on we spent less time outside the studio and more time in the pub.

4. Do you regret getting involved in any fandoms?
No. But they've either all been nice or I've just read some stuff occasionally and then that's not something you regret in quite the same way. They haven't all been great. I was in Stargate fandom when it was ridiculous and people literally couldn't understand how I could be friends with Jack/Daniel shippers when I was a Sam/Jack shipper (I later also became a Jack/Daniel shipper - I imagine shipping both would have blown their minds). The Bill fandom got a bit horrible during the soapy era (with accusations of homophobia and the coining of the word heterophobia). I ended up only going to the off topic side of the forum, but then it turned out that was the best part anyway. So I don't regret being involved in either of them.

End of year fandom meme
Friday 29th December 2017 3:06 pm

1. Your main fandom of the year?
In terms of fic writing and reading it's probably been Doctor Who. I don't tend to talk about it much because I find it's best enjoyed without thinking about it much.

2. Your favourite film watched this year?
I watched two films this year, Rogue One and Kinsgman. So my favourite is therefore the one I liked: Kingsman.

3. Your favourite book read this year?
Looking back, I really didn't write a lot of Reading Wednesday books this year, so I can't remember most of what I read. It's probably a tie between Carry On by Rainbow Rowell and Knowing the Score: My Family and Our Tennis Story by Judy Murray.

4. Your favourite TV show of the year?
Red Dwarf XII. Which is just as well because when I did this meme last year I put it down as my biggest fan anticipation.

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year?
The only ones I use are LJ and DW, so those.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Carry On, given the speed I got through the book. Although there's so much fic there I don't know where to start (so I haven't yet, but will when there's less Christmas exchange reading to do).

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Star Trek: Discovery. It got better when there weren't Klingons on it, but I can't stand Michael and it turns out she's the main character (I thought we were well rid of her after the first two episodes).

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Probably Jonnie Peacock.

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Diana Rigg, for her performance in Victoria.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Diana Rigg in Victoria. I either hadn't known she was in it or had forgotten, so I was pleasantly surprised when I finally got round to watching the latest series this month.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Exactly the same answer as last year: Stargate Atlantis, caused by reading SGA Secret Santa fics (particularly the Shep/McKay ones).

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Given the rate I keep acquiring them, I don't need any more.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
I'm excited about the Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, despite the time difference. And hoping Jo Konta does better this year (overall, not just at Wimbledon). I can't think of any answers that are non-sport ones!

End of year fandom meme
Thursday 22nd December 2016 6:58 pm

1. Your main fandom of the year?
I couldn't decide how to count this, so I looked back through my blog and I talked about Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Star Trek, The Bill, The Avengers, The Guild and Star Wars.

2. Your favourite film watched this year?
The only films I've seen this year have been Star Trek, Fantastic Beasts and Finding Dory. I liked them all pretty equally, but if you were to hold a sword to my neck and force me to choose, I'd go for Finding Dory.

3. Your favourite book read this year?
I looked back through my Reading Wednesday posts and there's nothing that particularly stands out.

4. Your favourite TV show of the year?
Red Dwarf XI. "He shouts formica and invents gravy." Can't be beaten.

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year?
LJ and DW, being my only online fandom communities.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
The Guild and Green Gables Fables. I rattled through both of those pretty quick.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Maybe the news that the new Star Trek TV series is going to be on Netflix. Or no Graeme Garden on ISIHAC.

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year?
I suppose the man that was on my TV that I was most excited about was Tosh Lines.

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Felicia Day.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Charlene being back in The Librarians.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Reading SGA Santa fics has made me miss Stargate Atlantis. Watching late 1980s The Bill makes me miss that it's not on anymore.

12. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I think I have quite enough to be going on with, thank you.

13. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Red Dwarf XII. Although that won't be until autumn, so that's more my fan anticipation for next year. For New Year it's more Charlene on The Librarians, as I'm assuming/hoping she'll be back at the end of the season (I am happily unspoilered).

Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favourite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

[info]lost_spook gave me Spooks, Blake's 7, Chalet School.

I was going to be all productive today, but then I wasn't much. I did play with the cat in the garden a bit. I hadn't seen him since Christmas and now he's a fully grown cat. Pictures to follow once I get round to uploading them.

But I did sort out, with my sister, what Olympics tickets we want to apply for. We ended up with the maximum number of sessions at £1550 between us... But think we'll only get half of them, if we're lucky, so it won't cost too much. And it'll be the price of a holiday, so it'll be my holiday for the year.

In an effort to wake me up from the hot weather and holiday stupor, have a meme, that I saw on [info]lost_spook's LJ:

Give me the name of a character and I will tell you the following:
1. How I FEEL about this character
2. All the people I ship romantically with this character
3. My non-romantic OTP for this character
4. My unpopular opinion about this character
5. One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon.

PS Doctor Who was good, I liked it. And if anyone's not following Stephen Fry on Twitter, who announced it this morning, John Sullivan (writer of Only Fools and Horses) has died. It's clearly that sort of week.

Fandom meme
Sunday 3rd January 2010 10:23 pm

I am going to bed really. I just got used to going to bed about 11pm ish and waking up at 9am ish. I just have to get used to getting up at 7.30am when it is dark and cold.

First, a toast - to the Professor, since it is Tolkien's birthday.

And a meme from [info]melliyna that looked fun:

Pick a fandom! And then I will say who from the fandom I would...

1. bake cupcakes for:
2. trust with the keys to my car (if I had a car):
3. put thumbtacks* on their chair:
4. have a crush on:
5. pack up and leave if they moved next door:
6. vote for President:
7. pick as my partner in a buddy movie:
8. pair up:
9. vote off the island and into the volcano:
10. wheedle into fixing my MP3 player:

*Bonus question: What's a thumbtack? Is it a drawing pin?

Top 5 meme responses

[info]hhertzof asked for top five bunnies (real or fictional)

Since it was supposed to be a fannish top five, I thought I ought to go for fictional ones:
1. Pancakes (The OC)
2. Anya's bunnies (Buffy)
3. The bunny from Pulling Princes etc
4. The ones on my ruler my sister brought me back from France
5. Er, now I've run out. That was a hard list to do

[info]hhertzof asked for five Chalet School characters who should have travelled with the Doctor:
1. Joey - she'd have loved the adventure
2. Jack - I think she'd have surprised the Doctor by understanding the TARDIS and knowing how to fix it
3. Jem - it would certainly open his eyes
4. Miss Annersly - the Doctor would have obeyed her every command 🙂
5. All of Joey's children at once - because it would be funny

[info]melliyna asked for top 5 parent and child relationship moments:
1. Jo leaving the Doctor because it's so sad
2. Elrond giving Aragorn Anduril in the ROTK film because you don't get many parent/child moments with those two, apart from in the Appendix. And also it's a very beautiful sword
3. Sarah talking about her parents with Luke
4. When Mickey tells Jack about being raped
5. Qui-Gon dying and Obi-Wan being all upset because that was so sad too. Er, it's all about the sad stuff really...

[info]lost_spook asked for top five Harry moments (I won't necessarily specify which Harry, that's up to you) and I was going to do Harry Sullivan, except I realised I already have (and amazingly, managed five too). So I did Harry Pearce instead and this probably shows my lack of memory of Spooks specificness:

1. When Ruth calls him and asks him to come round to hers and he pauses, not sure what she's actually asking
2. In the last series, taking off his tie and killing the man following him
3. I forget what actually happened now, but the start of the series before last where he orders a bombing, or something like that
4. At the end of the one with the bombing of Parliament Square where he turns out to be alright in the end and for a moment everyone would've cheerfully strangled him for knowingly putting him through that
5. When he knows he's about to be pulled in, but sits quietly with his drink and his music and waits for them

Midsomer Murders and a meme
Monday 10th August 2009 9:44 pm

I've just watched the latest three episodes of Midsomer Murders. They always take me a while to get round to because they're so slow you have to do something else while they're on. It was quite surreal because the first one had Vila from Blakes 7 in, the second had Peter Davison and the Borg Queen (and a couple of other people I recognised but couldn't be bothered to look up) and the last had that woman from Ultraviolet - with exactly the same hairstyle. Although it says everything about my visual memory that I can't remember if it's the same colour and I only saw Ultraviolet a few months ago.

And now for the meme that's been going round and I hadn't got round to putting up yet:

Ask me my fannish Top Five [Whatevers]. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! And I will answer them all in a new post. Possibly with pictures.*

* There won't be pictures.

Fandom meme
Wednesday 5th March 2008 8:35 pm

I had to go to bed last night even though I hadn't got everything done. So then because my brain was still working I couldn't sleep. I was fine this morning but once I got past lunchtime it's been a struggle. So now I've got back from my meeting, I've given myself the rest of the night off, so I'm going to watch Monday night's program on Black Holes that I thought was on on Tuesday. Thank goodness for 4oD. Slightly brain dead is probably the best state to watch physics for the masses because it tends to be too simplistic (cf last night's Horizon about searching for intelligent life).

But in the meantime, a meme from and :

Give me a fandom and I'll tell you...

1. The first character I fell in love with
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
5. The character I would sleep with anytime
6. The character I'd want to be like
7. The character I'd slap
8. Favourite character
9. Five favourite characters
10. Five least favourite characters
11. Character I am most like
13. A pairing (or more!) I love
14. A pairing (or more!) I despise
15. Five favourite things about the fandom
16. Five least favourite things about the fandom
