So I did Harry Pearce instead and this probably shows my lack of memory of Spooks specificness:

1. When Ruth calls him and asks him to come round to hers and he pauses, not sure what she's actually asking
2. In the last series, taking off his tie and killing the man following him
3. I forget what actually happened now, but the start of the series before last where he orders a bombing, or something like that
4. At the end of the one with the bombing of Parliament Square where he turns out to be alright in the end and for a moment everyone would've cheerfully strangled him for knowingly putting him through that
5. When he knows he's about to be pulled in, but sits quietly with his drink and his music and waits for them

Elrond (Lord of the Rings)
Elrond's just great. He suffers so many tragedies: losing his parents, then his brother, then his wife (albeit temporarily, although that's not entirely certain), then his daughter. And possibly his sons too. And yet it never breaks him. He never shies away from situations where he might be exposed to more heartbreak. Nor does he ever just give in - he carries on helping other people. And is always as kind as summer (although not this summer, clearly).

Elizabeth Weir (Stargate Atlantis)
Not my favourite character on Atlantis, and I can't be doing with the endless discussion on how good a diplomat she really is. However, she has become my favourite character to write. I don't know why. But I want her season 2 hair.

Estel (Lord of the Rings)
I wanted to stick to what I did last time and pick characters from something different each time, but I couldn't not include Estel. The human boy brought up fatherless in a world of elves, never learning who he truly is until he's 20 years old. Endlessly fascinating. Although what's most fascinating is his relationship with Elrond, which is only ever really hinted at in the books.

Evelyn Smyth (Doctor Who)
She might only be in the audios, but that doesn't stop her from being awesome. She's older than the Doctors usual companions and not afraid to give the Doctor what for. And she makes great chocolate cake. Okay, so it's not real, but then even if it was I wouldn't be able to eat it and I have to get my kicks somewhere.

Esme 'Granny' Weatherwax (Discworld)
My mum used to have stick insects called Esmerelda, then I read Discworld, then I met an Esme in real life. It was a very surreal experience. I feel like I'm cheating on this one because only Nanny Ogg calls Granny Weatherwax Esme, everyone else calls her Granny. But she's not a character easily left out. Of anything.

I'm not sure I'd say a lot. But they all have layers - they're not just a case of what you see is what you get, there's actually a lot more going on than you see, or they let you see.

2. Is there a favourite parent/child relationship that you have?

Elrond & Aragorn. Probably because there's most angst there

3. Give me three story ideas you haven't written yet, but want to?

If I include in this story ideas that I've started but haven't finished then:

  1. A long LOTR fic about Gilraen's life from the time when she marries Arathorn to the time when he dies. And to make it a bit more interesting, if I read the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen slightly sideways, although he says that he loves her, it doesn't explicitly state that she loves him. So it'd be getting into why she does it, how she copes with it all and just what she's like. I have bits that I wrote a long time ago and a desire to go back to it one day, but that's it.

  2. Some Harry/Martha because I haven't yet and I want to. I do have plans to write something for an unprompted churchontime fic, if I can just get round to it.

  3. Some sort of murder mystery/crime thing. I love my cop shows and murder mysteries and crime novels, so it's almost strange that I've never written anything like that. I say almost because I'm not convinced of my ability to work it all out - my trouble with plots is that I can set the characters a problem, but not be able to find a solution. But I've tried quite a few genres, so that must be one of the few left to try, I think.

4. A character that the rest of fandom doesn't like, but you do?

Jo Grant doesn't seem to be well-liked. Yes, she does scream a lot, but she's just as good as Sarah Jane Smith. Who also screams a lot. Adric is hated quite a bit, but I think he was just under-used. Elizabeth Weir isn't terribly well liked for her lack of diplomatic skills. But since I know nothing about that area, I don't really care that much.

5. What would be five stories that you wish someone would write?

I don't really have anything specific, so this is a list of things I think there should be more of:

  1. Jack O'Neill/Elizabeth Weir because there is so little of it.

  2. Sarah Jane Smith & Harry Sullivan because they're so good together.

  3. Elrond & Celebrían.

  4. Time Trax fic - because there is so little of it out there.

  5. Doctor Who fic where no one has any vague romantic feelings towards the Doctor in any shape or form.

The ones that I saw at uni were because I kept hoping the BBC would repeat it so I could see some. And they rarely did. They still rarely do - apart from the new series which is on every day.

Yes, but not because they were in Doctor Who. I've been to Winspit Quarry because it was in Blakes 7 (and a very good place for a waterfight). I've been through the village where they filmed The Android Invasion because my sat nav thought it was the best way to get to the motorway (it isn't, but then neither is following the signs a good way). The Invasion was filmed over there *points out lounge window* although before they built a housing estate on it. I've been to Cardiff, both before they filmed there, and more recently because I'm on the crew organising the Rotaract National Conference there in 2009. And I've been to London, of course.

15. What do you think of The Curse of Fatal Death?
Better than canon.

16. Do you have any fannish opinions that you think are fairly unpopular?
I don't ship the Doctor at all, which is quite rare. Also that the Daleks are sweet, not scary.

1. The Doctor at no point fancied or slept with any of his companions, except Benny. None of them ever fancied him, except Martha. Which is not to say that none of the rest never loved him, or he never loved them, it's just a platonic love.

1a. The only companions who had any romantic feelings for each other were Ian & Barbara and Steven & Dodo, but nothing ever happened while they were travelling with the Doctor.

1b. The following pairs of Doctor/Companion had parent/child-like relationships:
Three & Jo, Five & Adric, Seven & Ace

2. The Doctor came to like Earth after he and Susan lived there for five months - it's the longest he's lived anywhere apart from Gallifrey, so it feels a bit like home.

3. After they get back to Earth Ian and Barbara get married and live a long and boring life, which makes them both very happy. Ian doesn't realise he loves her until he's faced with the prospect of not seeing her all the time. Barbara works it out far sooner.

4. Steven and Dodo had a crush on each other but neither of them quite got round to doing anything about it.

5. Steven was good at being the leader of a group of people he'd not known long. So good, in fact, that once he introduced him to the idea of democracy they got rid of him.

6. As much as he complained about travelling in the TARDIS, afterwards Harry couldn't quite go back to an ordinary life. Which is why he ended up working for MI-5 and NATO and going on hush-hush missions.

7. Sarah and Harry love each other like brother and sister - which is to say that they snipe and bicker and compete about everything but are really the best of friends.

8. Nat is Sarah and Harry's daughter.

9. Harry's not dead.

10. Season 27 happened in that eventually Ace ends up on Gallifrey and shakes the Time Lords up rather a lot.

Having watched four First Doctor stories, I really like Ian. And I've discovered there's a story where they go to the French Revolution, which I definitely have to see. My next amazon DVD is The Aztecs, which is apparently where Barbara is great, so I am looking forward to that.

1.The Monster of Peladon - Admittedly I saw this before The Curse of Peladon, but I'm not convinced it would have made me like it more anyway. It's just so boring - nothing happens at any point in any of the episodes. And I just can't bring myself to care about Peladon (the planet) either.

2. The Talons of Weng-Chiang - I feel like I should like it because so many people say it's one of the best episodes. Although it did have its moments I just found it too strange.

3. Castrovalva - Three companions really is too many, even though they had more to do than the Doctor. It doesn't help that this is a Fifth Doctor episode and I can only see Peter Davison as Tristan. But I also didn't understand what was going on, and it had the Master in it, who bores me.

4. Silver Nemesis - It ought to be good because it has Seven and Ace and Cybermen but it also has loads of other people I just can't bring myself to care about. If it was half the length and cut out the other people I don't even remember who they are, it might be all right.

5. Pyramids of Mars - I think the trouble with this is I really wanted it to be good - Sutekh means a combination of Doctor Who and Stargate and how can that be a bad thing? Because nothing happens in this episode either.

5 FAVOURITE ARCS:

1. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances - Because it has Captain Jack and is one of only two arcs so far to scare me.

2. The Ark in Space - I like all the characters in this, and especially the way Harry & Sarah bicker. And that both companions actually have a use, as well as the Doctor. And even though I know the monster is made of bubble wrap, it freaks me out completely.

3. Carnival of Monsters - I'm not that keen on the entertainer or the alien planet, but I love all the stuff with the Doctor and Jo and the mystery of where they are.

4. Black Orchid - A murder mystery, and because it's only two episodes it zips along well. Nyssa, Tegan and Adric are like squabbling siblings in it, and I actually quite like Nyssa in this one.

5. The Robots of Death - Because it's a murder mystery! It did remind me of Blakes 7, possibly because Chris Boucher wrote it, or possibly just because quite a few of the 70s and 80s episodes remind me of Blakes 7.

5 LEAST FAVORITE FEMALE COMPANIONS:

1. Mel - It's Bonnie Langford and she screams. Admittedly, she's not quite as useless as she first appears, but the trouble is she's not Ace and it's Ace that I'd rather see the Seventh Doctor with.

2. Susan - Because she's so far proved herself to be completely useless, and she grates.

3. Nyssa - The trouble with Nyssa is that she never really makes an impression. If I had to describe her I'd have trouble.

4. Tegan - She's just annoying. Although I like her a bit better when she's arguing with Turlough.

5. Barbara - although I hear she improves, I have only seen the first two arcs with so far.

5 FAVORITE FEMALE COMPANIONS:

1. Ace - I wanted to be Ace when I grew up. She was cool, she caused explosions and she got to do than just ask the Doctor questions.

2. Charley - I like her attitude, which is a bit 1930s and a bit ahead of her time.

3. Jo - Because she did more than just scream. Admittedly, she did tend to need the Doctor's help quite a bit but she also rescued him and they worked really well together as a team.

4. Sarah - She was quite capable of doing stuff on her own and didn't need the Doctor. Although I prefer the older version, she's more interesting.

5. Evelyn - Because she's the one who tells the Doctor what to do, rather than the other way round.

5 LEAST FAVORITE MALE COMPANIONS:

1. Adam - It didn't help that I recognised him from Coronation Street (which I don't watch). But he was totally pointless and up his own arse.

2. Turlough - He was just unexciting. He spent all his time angsting about killing the Doctor or not, and going home or not, and just bored me.

3. Yates - for not being as great as Benton
And all the others are either on my favourites list, or I liked and didn't quite make the cut. And yes, that does include Adric.

5 FAVORITE MALE COMPANIONS:

1. Harry - He's so delightfully old-fashioned and out of his depth, he's fun to watch.

2. Ian - He's the most competent person out of the first TARDIS crew. He's almost more use than the Doctor!

3. Jack - For just being so entertaining. And sex-obssessed and not apologetic about it.

4. The Brigadier - It's great to see the way he learns more about how to deal with aliens and not necessarily try to blow them up as soon as possible.

5. Jamie - I've only seen one arc and one episode with him in but I really liked what I saw of him.

5 FAVOURITE VILLAINS:

1. I looked through a list of them on Wikipedia and I can't really get excited about any of them

5 FAVOURITE DOCTORS:

1. Three - I think I like him best because it was easy to see how much he cared about Earth, being stuck on it. And the people he was stuck with. And I love his cuffs, they're great.

2. Seven - Because he's my Doctor

3. Ten - He's so fun. And crazy.

4. Eight (audios) - I don't really like the version in books, he's a bit strange. But the audio version is fun and a bit useless, which makes him interesting.

5. Nine - He's angsty but excited about life. And can get away with not necessarily being nice to people.

These are in order of preference, which means, that yes, I do like Jo better than Sarah.

The doubles luge is definitely insane, though. Hurling yourself down a track on a tea tray is mad enough, but strapped to someone else? I am looking forward to the skeleton tomorrow, though.

It's quite nice to just watch be able to admire the impressive skiing/skating/insanity/whatever, without thinking about GB getting any medals (except in the curling). It's good to see people getting excited about coming in 14th, for example, because that's still 14th in the Olympics, which is pretty amazing, when you think about it.

I had entirely forgotten about the top 5 meme a while back. Avon asked me for my top 5 senior officers in The Bill:

1. Burnside. The original and the best. Okay, so he wasn't first, but he was DI when I started watching. He left such a big hole when he left that they no-one could quite live up to him. Until...

2. Deakin. I didn't think much of him when he started as a DS. But he grew on me - he was a better DI than he was DS. He left a hole when he left too. He also had the distinction of the best last line ever: "Up yours, Jack."

3. Gina Gold. I hated her when she started because she was nasty to Auntie June. But she was so good to PoG (post-personality transplant) and was great with Smithy. She was a good leader of the relief, given she was effectively doing the Chief Inspector role too. I kept hoping she would leave so I wouldn't have an excuse to keep watching any longer.

And, um, that's it, really. Everyone else is pretty much equal, much lower down.
