Missy and Writing
Monday 12th June 2017 8:40 pm

Did you know, that in the middle of the planks of laminate flooring is wool-like wood? Neither did I, until Missy half-demolished the one by the back door. She thinks it'll get her out of the back door. Occasionally she tries chewing the door too, but since it's plastic she doesn't get very far with it.It's the reason why my back door mat has a corner taken out of it. And why she's now working on the opposite corner, since I turned it around. The trouble is that she thinks anything put in her way is just a challenge to be overcome…

She's also gone off the cornflake-like pieces in her food. They used to be her favourite. With the other bits she's not keen on, she just leaves them in her food store and eats the bits she likes best first. Which seems to include bits of sweetcorn - I keep finding half-eaten bits of it buried everywhere. But with the cornflakes, she leaves them in her food bowl. Until yesterday, she was taking them off me, if I offered one to her. But yesterday I gave her one, she took it, thought about it, then dropped it.

She has yet to learn that just because she wants something, doesn't mean she'll get it.

I've been reading some Chalet School books recently, which I will post about on Wednesday. They really made me want to get back to Lynda Day at the CS. Although the trouble with that is I know how it starts, I just don't know how it goes on from there (aside from not what I wrote in the first draft).

For Unconventional Courtship I really wanted to write a pairing from a different fandom every time I did it. I was thinking of writing Harry/Ruth next because a bit of undercover stuff could fit well with a summary. But there's been a few things recently that have made me want to write Tarrant/Dayna, despite having written Tarrant/Servalan/Avon for the first Unconventional Courtship. I think the trouble is that Tarrant/Dayna fit the ridiculousness of the whole thing well.

What all this thinking about writing means is that I'm too busy for writing. But more awake and less dizzy than I was. We'll see how long it lasts.

Missy’s exploring
Monday 24th April 2017 8:58 pm

Missy has found exciting new places to explore! Courtesy of me, of course. After she spent some time looking up at the windowsill last night, I put her on it tonight. She ran about, sniffing it, decided she wanted to get out of the window at the corner, then end up wandering around the corner, where there's only really a thin sliver of windowsill. Fortunately I was ready and she fell off into my hand.

Missy on the windowsill

We had a holiday at my parents, where she got to run around in the hall. As I expected, once she found the cat litter she immediately thought "I'll have this" and tried to pouch it. She had to be removed from the cat litter tray.

She also tried to chew the mat. It's fine at my house, because mat's are cheap and it keeps her occupied. And in the light of her obsession with the sofa a mat seems much more harmless. But at my parents house their mat is built in and consequently doesn't need bits taking out of it by a hamster. She was surprisingly hard to remove from it when she had her teeth in it. She knows what "No" said firmly means and at one point looked at me when I said it, then carried on anyway.

She also discovered the stairs. Once she was up one she was up them all (until I stopped her climbing to the top). She wasn't quite so sure about coming down until she'd done a few.

Things
Sunday 12th March 2017 1:50 pm

I've been busy, no surprises there. But after being out three nights, playing with Missy when I've got back and not going to bed until late, then waking up annoyingly early on Friday, I ended up too tired to do anything yesterday (and Friday). So I did the two things I had to get done this weekend and then just read, watched some TV and dicked about on the internet. It was nice. I'm looking forward to two weeks time when I have four weeks off where I only go out twice on weekday nights. Of course I'm then busier at the weekends, but that's not nearly as tiring. Although on the nights I'm in Missy gets up after dinner (if I'm lucky, sometimes it's during) and that's my evening gone.

Although Missy hasn't forgotten about her desire to live in the sofa. She's just got more crafty about it. She doesn't fill her pouches up so much before attempting to run to the sofa and avoid me catching her. I have got similarly crafty and wait until she's busy stuffing her pouch (rather than chewing) and attempt to catch her. I am amazed what big pieces of cardboard she can fit in there. In her cage she absolutely stuffs her pouches full of bedding, so then I don't let her out. After a while she empties one and I still don't let her out. She gets to come out when both are empty. At some point in this process she throws a strop because I'm not letting her do what she wants.

It wasn't just tiredness that led to me not doing much yesterday - I've also hurt my feet, so I'm spending the weekend resting them. I think what I've been doing is wrapping my feet around the legs of my wheely chair at work (even though I have a footrest). And then I went to ballet, which finished them off. After standing up quite a lot at choir, I then attempted to limp on both feet on my way back to the car.

Missy
Thursday 26th January 2017 8:47 pm

Missy is a hamster who knows what she wants and is determined to get it. Which is why she's been chewing up my back door mat - she think it'll get her out the back door. One place there is no way she is going ever.

She hasn't chewed it for a while because she's had more important things to do in the evening: she wants to live in the sofa.

Missy

It started when she found a gap between the sofa and the material across the bottom of it. She had a great time in there - I don't know what she does but I saw her climb and heard her jump. I found where she got in and patched it up.

And then she found another way in. I don't know where because she didn't either - she chewed her way out. I can't patch that up (yet) because she went in there while I was cleaning her out. She 'helps' me clean her out and one of the ways is that she pouches her food store so I can't throw it away. Which actually is helpful because her food store is where most of her pooh is. She went in the sofa with pouches full of food and came out with empty pouches. Since it's dried food it'll be fine in there for a while but I don't want to patch up the hole and have hamster food living in there for years.

Missy

Since then she's filled her pouches with her bedding and asked to be let out of her cage. And come out, filled her pouches with cardboard and then I've had to catch her and put her back in her cage so she can't put that cardboard in the sofa and use it for bedding. Fortunately I've got good at catching her. After that she gets all stroppy.

So I currently have a nightly battle with a hamster, which I'm really hoping will end with her taking the food out of the sofa...

Things falling apart
Sunday 15th January 2017 3:29 pm

My computer's AC adaptor is being a pain and sometimes acting like it's not plugged in. Which happened before and I bought a new one, not that long ago. I could buy yet another AC adaptor, but my computer is also annoying me with how slow it is. I tried to do a bit of work stuff this morning (our software is online) and it made my appreciate how powerful my work computer is, even thought it takes 20 minutes to turn on and be usable. I can't open any links in Tumblr - it used to be ok and then Tumblr would put other posts you might like on the same page and that killed it. I open them on my iPod, which is much quicker. So a new computer is on the cards. And as much as I hate setting them up, doing it while the old one is still alive is much easier. Even though I like the KDE flavour of Linux, which is designed to be as hard as possible to set up.

My hamster thinks that chewing things is the way to get out of the back door. My back door mat has plastic spokes and she's been chewing them off. And then she started on the mat itself. And then she started on the laminate floor in the corner by the back door.

Although she doesn't chew cables, she was obsessed with the Sky cable. But that was easily fixed by chopping it off and filling the hole in the wall with Polyfilla. I now have a cable going from a satellite and ending in the wall, but if someone later buys this house and decides they want Sky that's their problem.

That was fine, the router cable was not. She had a couple of evenings of being really interested in the wall it was plugged into - presumably my neighbour was doing something she could hear and I couldn't and she wanted to get the other side of the wall. She was mostly trying to climb the wall, but also chewed the router cable. I thought I'd got to it before she could make a hole in it, but then my internet went down... I now have a new cable.

And then she got in the sofa. I'd noticed it wasn't looking great - I've had it about seven years and it was second hand and looking a bit worn when I got it, so that's not unexpected. But she found the bottom had come away and would have happily spent all evening in the sofa. When she finally came out I moved something in the way. I have now velcroed it up. Since one day I'd like to move I'm hoping the sofa will last until that day, since I might end up wanting one that's a different size.

So that was my week. You wouldn't believe that Missy has plenty of toys (I currently have bits of egg box around the floor) but of course chewing the house is more fun.

Things
Sunday 20th November 2016 4:29 pm

On Wednesday I sneezed and made my pulled muscle worse. And then on Friday it was suddenly so much better. At first I thought switching from paracetamol to ibuprofen had made the difference, but then it never got more painful after that.

I have had a busy weekend, getting lots of things done. I learnt that hoovering with my left hand hurts just as much as hoovering with my right, but hoovering with both was better. I went to the pet shop and wanted to take all the rabbits home. Especially one that came to see me when I spoke to them, and then licked the glass.

I bought Missy a toy that hangs up and has wooden things on it. It's the sort of wood she likes chewing, but she's spent most of her time with it on the string - she doesn't like hanging things, she always takes them down. It's safety pinned to the sofa, so it'll take her a little while as she can't spend the whole night working on it.

I got my Public Call fic done, which was just as well given that the deadline is this evening. I've also finished my Yuletide fic, for a given value of finished, given that I keep tinkering with it.

And I've started rewatching The West Wing. Since my pulled muscle means it hurts to laugh I had to find something that wasn't funny. And since I've been watching a lot of funny stuff on catch up, I keep using up my internet, so it had to be something I didn't need to stream. I've been wanting to rewatch The West Wing since I introduced my parents to it a few years ago and then caught an episode when I was home one weekend. I keep racing through it, partly because there's not a lot on at the moment, partly because I want to get to the bits I vaguely remember, but don't know when they are (and I am avoiding episode guides because I don't want to know in advance).

It was only after I started that I looked at my DVDs and thought that I should have considered The Bill - I have quite a few DVDs of half hour episodes from the 80s that I haven't watched. Or The Avengers - I have all the Emma Peel episodes and I've seen all the ones 'in color' but I can't remember which black & white ones I've seen. But now I've started The West Wing, I'll finish it first.

Of course this week has been tennis. I am disappointed that they won't show the doubles (of course) or the evening matches, and that Jamie and Bruno got knocked out in the semi-finals. But it is exciting that they're the number one doubles team this year. And Andy is the number one singles player this year. There's just the match in a couple of hours to decide who ends up number one in the rankings. I am hoping for a Murray victory of course, but I'd like either a decisive Murray win or a very close match with either winning. And come February there'll be another round of Murray vs Raonic when we play Canada (away) in the Davis Cup.

Things
Sunday 24th April 2016 8:20 pm

One day I will update more often. This week has been crazy. Our department of six at work was pretty much reduced down to me for some of the time. By the time I went food shopping on Thursday I was going round there like an old lady because I was too tired to think. Hopefully things will calm down after the bank holiday weekend.

Missy is good for stress, though. You can't think about work (or anything else) while playing with her. Mainly because she has no fear and I have to be ready to catch her. In the past three evenings she's fallen off me/the table four times. I have caught her every time. She's never at all worried about this - and even when she ends up on the (hard) floor she just thinks it's somewhere interesting to explore - but fortunately she is easily lured away by food.

I need work to calm down so I can attempt to get back to writing. Apart from the things I've had half-written on my hard drive for a while, I also have my [info]dw_guestfest to finish before next year's fest. I signed up for [info]unconventionalcourtship to write a Sarah/Harry fic, as I found a great prompt after last year's fest. But I had to do research as it felt like so long since I've written them! And then I'm currently contemplating my sign up for [info]not-primetime. I really want to do it, I just can't narrow down when I want to write and receive.

Where did March go?
Monday 28th March 2016 12:26 pm

March is a busy month. Two weekends ago I went to Rotary Conference. It was good, but did only involve 13 hours sleep over two nights. And I did [info]selenay on the way home when I came off the motorway and then got back on it again. The next junction turned out to be one where you couldn't get back on the motorway going the other way, and the sat nav was trying to take me through a city I have no intention of driving through ever (aside from that one driving lesson where I didn't have a choice). So we went the pretty way home, which involved mostly ignoring the sat nav.

After that I was out nearly every night and finally managed to catch up on my sleep last weekend. And then I got a cold. I can't have just a cold, because I don't have the energy to spare to deal with it, and it sets my dizziness off. But I hate having to stop everything just for a cold. After a week it's still not completely gone and I am still sleeping sitting up because it set my asthma off.

So all the things I was going to last week and this weekend, since they were petty quiet, haven't really been done. I have done a whole load of things off my to do list that needed doing. I have done some cleaning. Some things will just have to wait until I'm properly better.

While I was away a friend came in to feed Missy. But she didn't like that there wasn't someone around to talk to her and play with her. So it didn't help that I then wasn't in in the evenings and then was too ill for a while to be sitting up playing with her. I think she's forgiven me now.

I have proved (to myself anyway) that she can definitely see me on the sofa from where she is. There are times when I've looked over at her and her reaction is to stick her nose out of the bars, even though I haven't said anything (if I speak to her she sticks her nose out of the bars). She definitely watches me as much as I watch her and wants to know what I'm doing.

She is definitely cat-like in one aspect. There are times when it's convenient for me to play with her, but I can't convince her to come out and play. But once I'm sitting down watching TV, then she wants to play. She doesn't like being stroked or picked up, so I can only play with her when she wants to.

Didn’t mean to not post for this long
Thursday 10th March 2016 8:40 pm

I kept meaning to post, but just not getting to it. Which is the theme of this month really. I've got 400 words on my [info]dw_guestfest fic, but no idea where it really goes from there. And keep not being motivated/awake enough to poke at it. I seem to be in a period where my body has decided I don't need to sleep much past 6am, even on days when I don't have to get up early.

Last weekend I went to the tennis in Birmingham. It was good fun, but I disliked the hype before the match with t-shirt shooters and a DJ. I don't mind the music at changeovers, or Stirling Uni Barmy Army, but other than that I like the quiet. But we won, so that's all that matters 🙂 My sister pointed out that she could take a photo from her Apple Watch - so I held up her phone and she took the picture. Completely silly.

Missy has met her first stranger and was very good. Mostly she was just confused about something different going on. She also, on a different night, fell off my lap when I wasn't quite quick enough to catch her (she likes to hang off my knees). She's been a bit more restrained since, but I don't know how long that will last.

I'm looking forward to it being the end of next week when things will calm down a bit this month.

More things
Sunday 28th February 2016 8:34 pm

It's been a pain, reading my Livejournal feeds by the LJ friends page. I started off going to the LJ home page to login, but it takes so long to load it drove me mad. And then I found that my LJ layout is not quite right for my friends page. And my LJ. The comment pages are fine - usually those are the only ones I see.

But I don't have to read via LJ any more because I put all my public-only (ie communities) feeds through freemyfeed.com. I moved the people who crosspost everything to DW over to DW. And the rest I set up emails when they post. So now LJ feeds are working again. I can't quite be bothered to reverse all of that just yet.

Missy is still crazy and entertaining. This week she decided she wanted my dressing gown belt and tried to carry it off, but didn't get very far because it just did the knot up tighter. On Friday she decided she wanted the end of my shirt that was sticking out under my jumper. Except it was too big for her pouch and she didn't get very far in trying to chew it off. She also ended up on the floor (for the third time...) although it was partially my fault. She kept pretty much just falling off the end of my lap into my hand and I tried to move her back up my lap and she took exception to being picked up and jumped.

I have a photo from this morning when I'd made a noise and she'd woken up and looked up to see what I was doing - and had some cardboard from her bed on her head. Read more...

Missy
Sunday 24th January 2016 9:04 pm

Someone on a hamster forum said that hamsters were like the cats of rodents. I can see the comparison. Missy only wants to play with me when she feels like it. She stops to wash. She has a comfy bed, but has been known to sleep next to it or move all the wood shavings and sleep on the floor of her cage. She has a deep bit for digging in, so digs on a shallow section. She wants her toys/treats where she wants them, not where I put them. Her favourite toys are the free ones. She's intelligent, but an idiot. But she did pose for me recently: Read more...

Hamster
Monday 4th January 2016 8:26 pm

I will get back to Fandom Snowflake, but I bought a hamster yesterday, so I'm going to talk about her instead. Back in autumn I went to a friend of mine's whose teenage daughter has a hamster. I got to hold him and thought that I'd like a hamster. And then, later in the year, when I was stressed, I really wanted a pet. A hamster is not too much work or responsibility and doesn't take up too much space (or bring home headless mice).

I went out to buy one yesterday and ended up with Missy. Her favourite activity is attempting to destroy her cage. She's yet to work out that her wheel is for running on and not just for dumping stuff on.

I bought her because she was curious and when I got home she investigated her cage and wanted to know what I was doing every time I made a noise.

It's been very distracting writing this post because she's been awake, so I gave her some food between the bars when she stuck her nose out and have been watching her play. I'm looking forward to the time when she's happy to be picked up.

Here's a picture of her, beneath the cut/more: Read more...
