Rain, rain go away
Saturday 23rd June 2007 4:33 pm

I like thunderstorms when it's been really hot and you can stand outside, watch the lightning and go 'please rain'. It's a lot less good when it's rained every single day since I got back and isn't really very warm.

I just did my finances and I have paid myself back the money I owed myself to go to Romania! So I now have no money till I get paid on Friday, but this is an improvement on minus amounts. Now I need to save some so I can buy a new TV and have a very cheap long weekend away somewhere in Britain (possibly Cardiff, possibly somewhere else if I think of anywhere else reasonably close I want to go that's not in Dorset) in September.

I discovered that BT will give you a bill in pdf. I've had paperless bills for a while but I've always just downloaded my calls as a csv file. I don't know how long the pdfs have been there, but it doesn't help that they like to move everything on the site round on a monthly basis (or that's what it seems like - I can never find anything). Looking at it, I discovered that they're charging me £1.50 for the privilege of not paying by direct debit (so I actually pay the amount I owe them, not the amount they'd like me to owe them), which is a bit much. It doesn't help that they also charge £10 a month just for the line - which I use for my broadband connection, and occasionally for phone calls. My calls this month were particularly expensive at 71p.

Money
Monday 23rd October 2006 7:16 pm

I think I am addicted to saving. I got a statement today from my nice high interest savings account with some nice big numbers on it. I keep thinking that one day I'll be rich enough to buy all the DVDs and books I want but I realised with the amount I save per month there's actually nothing to stop me. Except then I wouldn't be putting so much money away each month and my system can't quite cope with that. It's a bit silly really because apart from being emergency money so I wouldn't starve/would be able to buy a new computer and so the saving up for it afterwards, it just sits there, hopefully gaining me more money than my student loans are c
costing me

It is better than the opposite though.

Money
Saturday 10th September 2005 11:25 pm

I seem to have had an expensive week. Wednesday I went to see The Importance of Being Earnest, which was for my Rotaract Presidents Night, so I can't really complain about that one (not least because it wasn't that much money). Plus it was really funny. I really enjoyed seeing it done live. It's been a while since I read it, so if they deviated much from the original text, I didn't notice. The butler was the funniest - purely by the way he moved. Algy was the best looking 🙂

Thursday I handed over large sums of money for guitar lessons. I need to give them more money for a guitar as well, but as they don't start for a couple of weeks, I'll wait till then. I'm looking forward to it, though.

Afterwards I sat down to watch stuff I'd videoed. The Dead Zone, I discovered, was the last episode of series 2 and Channel 5 are going straight into 3, so that's good. My video didn't quite manage to tape Lost though (at least it's repeated tomorrow), even though I re-set the date on Wednesday morning. At the moment it thinks the week goes ...Tuesday, Tuesday, Thursday..., which is unhelpful when you want to tape anything on a Wednesday.

So I've bought a new video. It's silver, so won't show up the dust so much. It definitely gets Meridian, so I can tape Monkeys in future (which is great). It's annoying though because when you set it to record you can't type in the info, you have to press the left and right buttons to change the numbers, which takes so much longer. But if at least acknowledges the existence of Wednesdays it'll be something. I considered getting a DVD or hard disk recorder but I'd still need a video to play my videos on. And I technically already have DVD and hard disk recorders - on my computer. Which will only work when it's turned on - which it isn't when I'm out.

I've also managed to sort out the main template for my WordPress blog. There's still a load of pages to sort out, but hopefully it'll get easier from now on. The stuff I was doing on it today wasn't helped by me looking at it in Internet Explorer and discovering a whole load of things that looked totally different. It looks identical on dad's computer now (and would on mine, except I have the font size turned up as default).

Enterprise and Money
Friday 4th February 2005 10:27 pm

Enterprise's cancellation is obviously big news - it made my BBC news e-mail and The Guardian. It's not really a surprise though, I can't say I've been rushing to watch it (I will get round to it though, I'm only two episodes behind at the moment). It seems a shame when you compare it to Voyager, which was also crap, but didn't get cancelled. I saw every episode of Voyager - there should be medals for that.

I discovered recently that My Money can tell you all sorts of things about what you're spending your money on. I only started using it so I didn't have to add up all the things I'd spent every month, because it would inevitably go wrong and I'd end up having to do the sums at least three times. So from the beginning of January I started putting all my spending into categories and the results are quite interesting. The only trouble is that it's a bit difficult to write down where all the cash I get out of the hole in the wall goes to. It accounts for my second biggest spending, after rent, but I'm just not sure how to deal with it.

Bad Week
Friday 11th June 2004 10:06 pm

I've had a bad week and here's why:

  • It was really hot at work on Monday and Tuesday and to make things worse I was migrainy Monday, but I didn't notice because it was giving me the same symptoms as the heat. So I didn't make it to Tae Kwon Do because I felt too ill. My hayfever also went rampant due to the heat. Having said that, it has improved since then and we are getting air conditioning at work the week after next (bets on how hot the next couple of weeks are going to be and how cold it'll be after we get it?)
  • A friend of mine who is an IT technician at the school came round to look at my external hard drive. He couldn't fix it. It could possibly be the connector, but could also be the actual drive. I have all my videos on this drive (the ones I haven't got round to putting on CD yet). So I'm now trying to re-download them all. I should be mostly okay though, which is something. I've also bought a new external hard drive, which will be 60GB (the old one was 40GB) so I'll have more space on it, at least (since you can never have too much).
  • That, coupled with spending more money on my glasses than I was planning to put away for Australia means I won't be putting any money away for it till August. The plan was to save for it before I went, so I would come back and have money. Don't think that's going to happen now.
  • My computer at work is knackered, frankly. So since my boss is away I thought I'd use hers. But she has XP and I don't, so when I log on as me there are practically no programs loaded. I've been nagging the IT guy about sorting this out for weeks now, and guess, what? He still hasn't done it.

Apart from all that, there's just been a constant list of things to do and people needing me to do stuff. I really need to get some writing done and I haven't done any.

On the plus side I have now seen every episode of The West Wing, including the ones at the end of season 3 I saw before I had a clue what was going on. It was odd, going to that from season 5 - I hadn't realised how much I'd missed Sam until I saw it with him in again.

This weekend I am going up to uni, so I am determined to have a good time. And next week I will make it to Tae Kwon Do, twice; I will eat fewer biscuits; and as I'm only in one night next week I suspect I'll be rushing about, then relaxing at the weekend. Which I enjoy in a masochistic sort of way.

Appraisal
Monday 31st March 2003 10:49 pm

I've got an appraisal/MAPs review crap thingie tomorrow. Its all a complete load of bollox cos frankly I've done last years goals (apart from the one that says I will do my job (well, d'uh!)) and have entirely new ones for next year. Like, maybe, Ruler of the Universe. I lie, actually that's planned for the year after. Pay rise would be nice though, but suspect this meeting is to review this years goals, then we have another one to make up next years. Who knows. Indeed, who cares? Not me, that's for sure.

I looked at my pay for the (tax) year to date on my pay slip today and it came to an odd 999.98. Which is fine, except, I want my 2p! I earned that 2p and I intend to spend it! (won't be hard, let's face it). Can't decide whether to stay up and watch Dead Poet's Society, or tape it and never get round to watching it. Oh, the decisions!

What I’m worth
Sunday 23rd March 2003 10:39 pm

According to humanforsale.com I'm worth $1,362,000. Not sure anyone's going to buy me though. I've sort of sorted out my life this weekend, which was the plan. I have a job-related plan at least. I got myself all excited about the idea of getting a car as a solution to my fencing-related crisis but I realised yesterday that I would actually much rather spend the money on other things - holidays for instance. Getting excited about booking for Las Vegas this week though.

I meant to work on some fic today, which I did a bit of this evening. Had an idea for some serious Elrond-angst so had to write that up this morning. I think its a reaction to all this happy stuff, my head can't cope with it. Fan fic is all about making the characters unhappy, that's the whole point!

Going to have a busy week next week, which is good, as everything is back on. Work is going to be boring, I can already predict that, but then it always is. But only four weeks till Easter. Sod it, haven't had enough sleep this weekend. Going to do the puzzle instead.

SG5
Thursday 31st October 2002 9:37 pm

Haven't posted for a while due to being tired. I got 3.5 hours of sleep Sunday night (entirely my own fault) and not that much more any night before that. Then it took me 9 hours to get from Blackpool train station to Oxford train station on Monday, where I was constantly changing trains (busy) and sitting around at Birmingham for so long I thought I wasn't getting home. Not good. And just realised I haven't told my video The Bill is only an hour long tonight. But new Buffy!

Anyway, will maybe do some website stuff this weekend as my photos will be back by then (I took 2 films worth!). Spent serious amounts of money even before Chris Judge's talk on Sunday. Where I paid half of 150 to grope Garwin Sanford (Narim). I'd much rather it had been JR's (Martouf) but he was too expensive, plus it was apparently quite bony. Garwin did at least have a nice arse, even if he is nearly the same age as my mother.

Er, what else. All the usual stuff really. Will put something on my site maybe, or write it in here when I'm feeling more inspired. I must do something with this as well, I've been getting inspiration from reading other people's recently.
