Yuletide Recs
Friday 31st December 2010 12:33 pm

Somehow I managed to read all the Yuletide fics before New Year. The Madness ones I read the same morning they opened. It helped that the static version was really quick, no matter what time of day. But the real versions seem to be pretty quick now, even when the Americans are up, so I'll link to those.

Here are my recs (in alphabetical order of fandom): Read more...

Wardrobes and fic recs
Monday 19th January 2009 10:14 pm

I now have a wardrobe in my bedroom. And right across my right hand hurts from screwing screws into wood where there were no holes. The pack had 80 screws in them and we used... more than 20. So it's quite shoddy but not really quite shoddy. I've filled it up and it hasn't fallen over or fallen apart anyway. I still have more unpacking to do, five weeks after I've moved. The trouble is I have too much stuff for the space - I need a two bedroom house to fit it in. Although then I'd have to bring up all my books and videos and other stuff from home and goodness knows how I'd have the space for everything...

I'm still feeling a bit temporary and like everything is on hold until I get my main laptop sorted and get my flat sorted of piles of crap. So in the meantime, have a couple of long Doctor Who fic recs with Harry in:

Saving Horse Feathers by Weimlady. It's unfinished, but there's another long one to read first. They're both Ten, Sarah and Harry and although I started off not sure about them, I still couldn't put them down.

The Trouble with Harry by Azar. It's a crossover with NCIS starring Ten, Martha, some Harry and some NCIS characters that I vaguely recognise the names of. But even not knowing anything about NCIS, I still liked it.

TARDIS Big Bang recs
Monday 14th July 2008 9:21 pm

I have finally managed to read through all the TARDIS Big Bang stories and have a list of recs. I also liked all the art and vids, and commenting on art was a new thing for me because I never usually look at any of it. In order of author: Read more...

43 Yuletide recs (or these are the ones I read and enjoyed)
Wednesday 26th December 2007 12:33 pm

In the following fandoms: The Avengers, Spooks, Chalet School, 10 Things I Hate About You, Coupling, Midsomer Murders, Little Miss Sunshine, Vorkosigan series, Wonderfalls, Discworld, Blakes 7, Ugly Betty, Pushing Daisies, Quantum Leap.

First the ones that were written for me:

The Avengers
A Funeral for Mrs Peel - This is just like an episode and has just the right amount of everything. It had everything in it that I asked for, which I am amazed about.

Spooks
The Book of Ruth - This was an unexpected treat and such a lovely Harry/Ruth fic, with some fabulous description and a great way of reuniting them.

44 Remix V recs (or these were all the ones I read that were good)
Thursday 26th April 2007 8:25 pm

I've been on a remix reading spree and read everything I liked the look of. Of those, these are the ones I liked the best. The ones I thought were particularly good I will be reviewing for Haven Reviews after the authors are announced.

I really enjoyed reading through these. I tend to read more varied stuff for remix - and more fanfic period, than I have at the moment - so there are all sorts of interesting gems in here.

32 Remix IV recs (or these were all the ones I read that were good)
Saturday 1st April 2006 10:07 pm

I finally managed to read through Remix IV while it was still anonymous. I wrote a list of all the ones I got to the end of and enjoyed - which was most of the ones I started. The only ones that didn't fall into that category were just because they were something I wasn't that interested in. In general, all of the stories on there seem to be really good. With some quite funny funky remix subtitles (I particularly liked Remixes Lead to the Dark Side). I still need to leave feedback for these, and go back and read the originals (and leave feedback) but that will have to be another day.

There's a list of various people's recs posts here. I'm really excited that my remix fic got recced!

B2MEM: Fics
Monday 27th March 2006 6:42 pm

For Back to Middle-earth Month, I thought I'd work my way through my (long) list of LOTR to read emails/bookmarks/RSS feeds. I have nearly made it but it doesn't look like a lot of activity. So I thought I'd write about what I'd been reading. Although it would be easier to remember what I'd read if I hadn't been deleting the reminders as I read them!

History Lessons: The Third Age by Nilmandra: This one's been the easiest to keep up with because there haven't been that many updates in the past (quite a) few months. It's all about Elrond, so you can't go wrong with that one really ๐Ÿ™‚ But mostly, these are the stories Tolkien should have been writing - he just didn't realise how important/interesting Elrond was ๐Ÿ™‚

Arwen's Heart by Bodkin: I started reading this when there were just a few chapters, so by the time I came back to it I had about ten to read. I was expecting to just deal with Arwen during the time when Aragorn was Estel, but it goes right up to the end of the Third Age, which was not an unpleasant surprise. Bodkin makes Arwen really sympathetic in this, and there are all sorts of other interesting things going on with other women in the story too.

A Lesser Treason and A Midsummer Night's Dream by Jay of Lasgalen: Every time I think I've caught up on Jay's stories, she goes a posts a new story or chapter. Both of these are Jay's usual twins stuff. Both really good, of course. A Midsummer Night's Dream has some great action scenes in it, A Lesser Treason has some great emotional family moments. I'm caught up now, Jay, you can finishe A Midsummer Night's Dream!

Don't Panic! by Boz4PM: Nilmandra recced this one in her LJ, so I had to go and see what it was all about. It's a realistic girl dropped into Middle-earth story. There's loads of interesting stuff in there about how they did ordinary stuff at the time, as well as loads of Middle-earth knowledge. There's a sequel but I haven't started that one yet - it took me long enough to read this one (it's quite long).

Atlantis
Monday 26th September 2005 7:54 pm

In last week's Supernanny she commented that to the mother everything seemed 'this big because she was tired' which is pretty much how I felt this morning. I got sick of my dinner last night for being so dry and I desperately wanted some normal bread and as a result everything little niggle seemed like a major insurmountable crisis.

I'm not sure what it was that happened between then and now (specially as I was at work!) but it's all seeming a lot smaller this evening.

I read an Atlantis fic the other day, Day Break ,which suddenly made me believe in the Sheppard/McKay pairing. I think it was entirely due to one comment, where McKay off-handedly mentions that Sheppard is in McKay's meeting being Sheppard's pretty. And I thought that seemed exactly like something McKay would say. So now I can see Shep/McKay, Shep/Teyla and Shep/Weir. And I thought shipping Sam/Jack and Jack/Daniel was complicated.

Before I know it I found myself writing a Shep/McKay fic while I was writing a database this afternoon (which explains why my database was full of errors). It's fairly drafty but for once I don't care - it might make it into a longer fic at some point, I might never do anything with it again, but here it is anyway. Let's see if I can remember how to do this this simultaneous LJ-cut thing...

What a week
Thursday 7th July 2005 9:14 pm

It's definitely been a full week (apart from work, in which I have done very little). So far this week I:

  • Have been abused for doing my (voluntary) job
  • Had my first friend get engaged
  • Another friend has got her dream job
  • Discovered I am intolerant to something but I don't know what, by being really ill Monday night and so tired since I can barely stay awake until it gets dark
  • Actually seen the last episode of Blakes 7 I had missed (which taking my mind off the fact that I might throw up)
  • Not this week, but possibly managed to improve my job (not to mention pay)
  • Also not all this week, spent too much money on ebay and banned myself from buying any non-food items

I have every intention of going to the Beeblebear's picnic on Saturday, assuming the tube is back to normal. I don't intend to stop eating anything, even though I really have no desire to experience Monday night again, I also don't intend to be intimidated by terrorists. (Although keeping a food diary doesn't half make you think twice about that sneaky iced bun). The way people drive round here I'm far more likely to be killed crossing the street.

I was really impressed by the way livejournal became so useful. Although I know people who work/live in London it wasn't well enough to ring them (not least because I don't have any mobile numbers) but I found out they were all okay at lunchtime by checking LJ.

I also have links:
Three Way Switch - a funny Blakes 7 story (Sel, this is the one I've been talking about)
End of the Circle - A long Seventh Doctor & Ace (unfinished) fic that is a whole lot better than most of the stuff I've found
History Lessons III - Elrond + angst + Nilmandra + lots of chapters = perfection ๐Ÿ™‚
Overheard in New York - Just proving there's nowt as queer as folk

I'm still not entirely awake so that's as coherent as you're going to get.

I should be doing other things really, but I went out to play tennis and ended up playing on the climbing frame in the park. Who wants to be grown up anyway? Certainly not me.

iwantoneofthose.com It's basically like a big Gadget Shop - full of really cool stuff that you don't need but really, really want. Like a gadget to make orange juice flavoured shot glasses (for putting vodka in). The kitsch section is particularly fun.

Cat User's Manual Written as if a cat is a computer. The difference between a warm and a cold boot is the presence of absence of a shoe. There are other cat jokes on the site as well.

And some Harry Potter recs:

First Signs of Magic: Hermione Granger Dr. and Dr. Granger have a perfectly ordinary evening, when something very odd occurs. What do they do? "As a family, they made the decision to panic." Includes vampires, uncomfortable chairs, and singing hospital orderlies. The mystery of lost paperwork is solved.

Scrabble The Slytherins play. Who knew Scrabble was a wizarding game?

Stealing Harry What would happen if Lucius Malfoy got to Peter before Sirius did? And if Sirius followed his godson, forbidden to do more than watch him from a distance? Until, one day, Harry found Padfoot... (Sirius/Remus and has kid friendly sections as well)

TPM Rec
Monday 21st June 2004 11:04 pm

And there I was thinking I wouldn't be able to think about anything except Wimbledon for the next two weeks. This isn't really a fic, but it's funny if you've read any slash, specially if it's TPM.

Drabble and rec
Friday 2nd January 2004 5:32 pm

I actually managed to write a drabble for LOTR100: Be Careful What You Wish For. Now I just need to get myself sorted and write one every week - and for TPM100. And read them all as well. Hmm. I'm still trying to catch up on all my reading as it is.

I have a new rec though - Darkest Before the Dawn by Losseniaiel - with a nice bit of Elrond angst - what more could you ask for?

New computer and ADSL

Maia of Ulmo
You are a Maia of Ulmo, Lord of Waters

Whose Maia are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

A couple of recs:
History Lessons: The Second Age - it's only just started by, judging by the quality of History Lessons, it's got to be good.
Further to Fly - I'm on a bit of a West Wing kick at the moment and this one is long and good with lots of people having crises.

This weekend I spend just over ๏ฟฝ2000 on a new computer and various accessories. The computer itself is arriving on Friday, although sadly it's being delivered to my parents house. Which means I won't get to see it until Christmas and won't get to use it much until the end of January. On the plus side I am getting broadband! It only works out as a few quid more a month than I'm paying now and freeserve is really quite amazingly crap. I had 303 ZoneAlarm alerts in half an hour last night and I wasn't even doing anything!

LOTR Recs
Sunday 19th October 2003 8:54 pm

Haven't updated for a while because I've been busy. Not sure what I've been busy with mind you...

A couple of angsty twins recs: The Search and Lost

Neither finished, but a nice bit of angst over missing Elrohir's. I've also been discovering the Stories of Arda site, which is nice and quick, has a search function and you can leave and reply to reviews.

I went to the Lord of the Rings exhibition at the Science Museum yesterday which was very good. Made me want to watch the films again to see all the things in the exhibition! It was good to meet up with people I'd only met online as well.

I'm going to America in two weeks! I'm starting to get excited, think about packing, and its kind of scary at the same time. I've never been on such a long flight before. I think going to SG6 and meeting up with people the night before will help and take my mind off it. And it'll be good to see my friends again as well.

Angel, Dead Like Me
Tuesday 7th October 2003 8:35 pm

First up a rec: How I Spent My Summer Vacation by Elladan son of Elrond. Its completely ridiculous and very funny.

I finally saw the new episode of Angel the other night. Looks okay so far - not enough Wesley though!

I've started watching Dead Like Me as well, which is really good. Its funny, although its possibly slightly worrying when you find yourself laughing when someone dies and their blood gets splattered over George's shirt.

I was going to get all sorts of things done tonight but I ended up reading the sequel to the above rec instead. And now I only have half an hour until Taggart, Wife Swap and (at 9.30) They Think It's All Over is on. Thank goodness the latter is repeated so I can safely tape one of the others.

Date
Sunday 30th March 2003 11:57 pm

It's really crap that it's nearly April and I still can't publish my template (ie update the archives). The address of them is fairly easy to guess from the addresses of the others though. I have another recommendation that I will add in there for when it eventually decides to behave. It's another LOTR fic (have I been reading anything else recently?) called Captain My Captain. It's VERY long and has, if not all, many of the Mary Sue cliches in it, but it works. And is very good. And I think I've fallen in love with her Elrohir. And I haven't even finished reading it yet.

Today is special. Mother's Day, first day of BST and its a palindromic date: 30-3-03. Although we'll get a few of those this year. In fact every month except for February, October and December. It occured to me last night there is no such time as anything from 1 to 1.59am on 30-3-03. Which is quite strange to think about. It's like when we lost 10 days in September all those years ago when they changed the calendar. It's reallt hard to understand because it just doesn't make sense. The trouble is the days go on one after another, we just assign arbitrary days and times to them. Which, unfortunately, don't work because they don't give us whole numbers.

Hopefully, now we'll have darker mornings I won't wake up at 7am (8 on weekends). Thought I was doing really well this morning by waking up at 9, but I didn't go to bed till after 2am (BST) and my body clock is still on GMT. I know this, because although the clocks say midnight I'm hungry. Which always seems to happen about 11pm. Should maybe go to bed with an undemanding Buffy book.
