RPing
Monday 26th November 2012 8:58 pm

Back in January 2007 was just after I moved house (and SJA showed their first episode - I only remember that because it was just when I'd moved house). Someone had posted a fic and I had been browsing and followed some links and discovered the murky world of roleplaying on LJ.

I'd done it in the past on Yahoo Groups, but back then you couldn't play a canon character. On LJ you could. I started off playing an AU Harry Sullivan and it went downhill from there (but there was a lot of canon Harry going on too). Last week I ended up ending it after nearly six years. I had a lot of fun during that time, but for a while it hadn't been fun.

Along the way I wrote a lot of Harry short un-betaed fic, met some great people (none of whom I'm still in contact with), ended up in charge of a prompt community (until prompts fell out of favour) and had my own game too (until I closed it last week).

The whole thing was a lot like collaborative fiction - writing a story with someone else, but you could never write what their character did and you could never be sure exactly what they were going to do. It certainly made writing banter more interesting (not to mention harder).

But because you were writing with someone else there was a part of it that always felt like an obligation - if I didn't do my part then they couldn't do theirs. I always put myself under pressure to do my part and I am terrible under pressure - especially when it's pressure I put myself under.

So now I've stopped doing it, I feel great! No pressure and a lot more things I just don't care about. I haven't ended up with much more time because I wasn't doing a lot anyway.

Summary of my life
Wednesday 25th August 2010 8:50 pm

I keep thinking I should update, but then I have nothing to say. I feel like my life has nothing going on it at the moment. Or at least nothing interesting. Which I've just realised is a terrible lead in to this post, which is a summary of what I'm up to... Read more...

The State of Me
Sunday 15th June 2008 6:25 pm

I have just added a few people to my friends list - mostly people from TR or names I've seen often in various places. Friend back, don't friend back, I don't mind. As far as I'm concerned, my LJ friends list is a copy of my RSS Feeds and is just a reading list.

I'm really disliking hayfever season. It's not helped by spending last night in a Barn in a field that was open. I'm currently on medicine, nose spray, eye drops and the maximum dose of my inhaler, but for the past week I haven't been able to lie around in bed after I wake up because I just can't breathe. It does go away a bit during the day, to come back in the evening, but I'm really looking forward to the end of the hayfever season.

I'm really looking forward to Wimbledon now, after the taster that was the Stella Artois semis and finals this weekend. Especially today's between Djokovic and Nadal, which was such a good match. The question is whether any of them can beat Federer, who won in Halle.

After having it on my rental list for months, Amazon have finally sent me the first DVD of Sapphire and Steel. I've had it for a week now and have so far watched none of it. All TV except Doctor Who has finished, but I keep not being in for that and then just don't get round to putting the telly on.

I had such a long list of things to do this weekend that I wrote them down. Then got all the more urgent things done yesterday, but I still have to clean, spring clean, make bread and do some Rotaract stuff. Today I don't seem to have managed much at all.

After the big, long post the other day about roleplaying, I have almost decided to drop Gene and Ian in favour of spending time on Harry & Jo and other non-rp things. Almost.

Although I haven't started any of them yet, I am still taking fic requests. I am already feeling guilty about not thinking about them and refusing to let myself write anything else, so it's sort of working.

Roleplaying decisions
Thursday 12th June 2008 11:11 pm

I'm talking about LJ roleplaying (RPing). If you haven't got a clue what I'm talking about, the roleplaying tag will have some explanations (that leads to my blog, since I've only just got an updated LJ crossposter that posts my WP tags to LJ tags, rather than my WP categories). Read more...

About roleplaying
Monday 14th April 2008 10:06 pm

I've been meaning to do this for ages because I don't talk about roleplaying much because I know most of the people reading this will either not have a clue what I'm on about, or will be thinking of a different type. So this is a bit of a story of my experiences with roleplaying. Read more...

On RPing again
Thursday 6th March 2008 4:57 pm

Something that I just don't get about prompt comms and how they're different to every other comm on every other website I've been to.

Everywhere else, the mods or admins always make themselves know. And it's always easy enough to find out who they are, even if it's just a name. The RPs I'm in, if I don't know the names of the mods, I at least know where to find out. I might not know anything about them, but I at least know they're a person.

Prompt comms on the other hand, with a few exceptions, there's nothing anywhere ever that tells you who the mods are. Believe me, I've looked. I suppose there's nothing to stop me asking, but there's no way to get that question across without sounding like you're a bit of an arse.

That's why on the profile page of I made it said who the mod is (well, it gives Harry's LJ, but on that it has a link back to mine). It just seems like good manners to me to have it there. And it reminds people that the mod is only human and is therefore not omniscient or infallible.

But what's the difference with RP prompt comms? Why the secrecy? On the drabble and flashfic comms there's always a way to know who the mods are and they're quite a similar thing.

It could lead to misinterpretation like one I've read recently. On it, the mod says that they're affiliating with various other comms on the basis that they're non-wanky (fandom definition). But for all I know, it could actually be that they're all run by the person writing the post. It's probably not, but there's nothing to say otherwise.

Talking about roleplaying
Tuesday 4th March 2008 11:05 pm

It seems the thing to do in one of the games I'm in at the moment, and I've actually been meaning to talk about the characters I have at the moment anyway. I just know that most of the people reading this won't have a clue what I'm talking about, or care. Read more...

An update on everything
Sunday 10th February 2008 4:32 pm

I keep feeling like I haven't written in here much because I've just been so busy. So, an update, with headings in place of LJ-cuts, because on WP once you cut you can't come back (not without a plugin anyway). Read more...

Christmas holidays
Thursday 27th December 2007 11:35 pm

I have finally managed to sort out all the tags and categories on the blog. Although I have 187 in Other Stuff that I don't quite have the energy to go through. And they're in there in the first place because they didn't really fit into any other category.

My sister bought herself a Wii for Chanukah (me and mum just bought ourselves books, and I thought I was extravagant for spending £15). I'm alright at bowling on it, but terrible at tennis and working the menus. And being able to strap the remote to myself. It gives me a headache too, although not as bad as the PS2.

I'm also up to date on my prompts so I am getting through the things I need to do over Christmas. There's just some bits that are more urgent really that I haven't quite go to yet...

Sunday
Sunday 11th November 2007 11:01 pm

Happy Birthday ! I assume it's today as I've only seen messages on other people's LJs today.

This afternoon I watched Pirates of the Caribbean with a friend who hadn't seen it before. It's been ages since I saw it and I'd forgotten how good it was.

I was good and did some prompts. For Ian and Jo it was just thetenspot, Harry it was ROTM as usual (I like their prompts) and I wrote something long for alt!Harry that wasn't angsty. But did involve him and women as per usual.

And I was much more coherent earlier, but I need more sleep. Specially as I have to get up early on Friday to collect for Children in Need before work.

Fanfic and RPGing
Thursday 12th April 2007 9:30 pm

I was having a bit of a surf last night and came across some stuff on various LJs about RPGing that is buried in my History somewhere. But it got me thinking about it and my experiences of it.

I wasn't expecting it to get that long, though... Read more...

What I’ve been (failing) to do on the internet
Wednesday 24th January 2007 10:06 pm

A friend of mine told me she had a myspace page but couldn't work out how to change the look of it. I can't quite get my head round myspace - I mean, what's it for? - but I thought that should be simple, I mean I know monkeys do it. So I created one (here, incidentally) and I managed to change the font colour of some text. The rest I just don't know how it's done and the help is incredibly unhelpful.

Trillian's been driving me mad too. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Trillian Astra because currently I can't send or receive files (which is a common problem), get anyone to see any messages I type in Google Talk (also a common problem), add contacts in AIM (guess what?), or join an AIM chatroom without being invited (that one's a bug).

The latter I've discovered as I ended up joining a Doctor Who RPG: Relative Space and they use AIM. I refuse to download or use AIM on principle because it's AOL and I refuse to have AOL on my computer. And I don't see why I should have to because Trillian should work, dammit! I have paid for it after all.
