Lynda Day at the Chalet School
Monday 26th January 2015 7:30 pm

For the first time ever (as far as I can remember anyway) I have dropped out of a ficathon. In the first three or four months when I signed up for Small Fandoms Big Bang I managed 3000 words of Lynda Day at the Chalet. I was expecting the end of the year to be busy, but not how busy it was.

I did get 5000 words done in the couple of weeks after Christmas, so I ended up with a finished first draft. But by then I resented the amount of my time it was taking up and couldn't face the re-writing and editing it needs.

So I dropped out, as the deadline is the end of March (plus I didn't want to send my first draft in for the draft deadline at the end of January).

But I promised to finish it by the end of the year. Hopefully putting that in writing in public will make sure I do it 🙂

Sign ups are open on [info]dw_remix! Come and write a remix, you know you want to (you only need to write 500 words). The post looks like it's empty, but people have signed up - it's just screened so people can give their email addresses.

For Yuletide I think the three fandoms I'm going to nominate are Press Gang, House of Elliot and Wizards vs Aliens. I haven't changed my mind on this for a while, so I might well not change it come nominating time. Handily, assignments go out around the time [info]dw_remix is due, so they don't overlap too much.

I am considering signing up for [info]sga-santa. I need more ficathons at this time of year like a hole in the head, but I had a look at the sign ups and got all nostalgic. I'd have to rewatch quite a bit (what a hardship!) as I only vaguely remember some bits. But the sign ups don't close until [info]dw_remix assignments go out, so I am waiting to see what I'm going to write for that before I commit to this. And it does have two months writing time, which sounds more do-able.

And then there's Lynda Day at the Chalet School, which is ongoing over all of this. I haven't actually written anything on it since Wednesday because I've had other things to do with the time that I'm in the house, but I do have about 2600 words. I'm just about in the (apt) troublesome middle where I don't know what I'm doing, beyond trying to get to the vague idea I have for an ending. I probably need to watch more Press Gang and read more Chalet School (another hardship).

A few things
Tuesday 9th September 2014 8:20 pm

Work is really crazy at the moment - 9 hours days are normal (and that's 9 hours of full on working hard too). It really takes it out of you - I nearly cried at 5.15 (we finish at 5.30) when I thought someone was telling me they'd changed something on a project that meant doing a lot of work. It turned out to be not a lot of work when I calmed down a bit and understood what they were telling me.

I got my hair cut at the weekend because it was getting long and annoying me (this is how I know when it needs cutting), but it ended up shorter than I really wanted. Which is fine because it means I don't have to go back for a while, but doesn't look that good, so I've been taking to wearing it up at the moment. So it's just as well that it's warm. It looked fine in the hairdressers, but of course it was damp then, so less curly.

I have been writing Lynda Day at the Chalet School in bits and pieces, generally 200-300 at a time and I've managed to accrue 1600, which is over a tenth of the way there, based on the minimum word count for Small Fandoms Big Bang. I am liking Written? Kitten, partly because I get a kitten for doing writing and partly because it has a fairly small box for writing in, so I'm not faced with a lot of blank screen. Although it is annoyingly buggy and by the time I think I've written more than 100 words I have to refresh it in order to get a kitten when I get to the next 100. So far in the story I have Lynda, Julie, Sarah, Kenny, Daphne Bettany and Geoff Maynard.

Ficathons

This year's round of [info]dw_remix has officially started, with sign ups for people willing to have their fics remixed. Sign ups for people wanting to write a remix open next week.

And today I signed up for Small Fandoms Big Bang. I now have until the end of January to write Lynda Day at the Chalet School. And work out the plot past the beginning. I've been thinking about it all summer and haven't got anywhere, but maybe the time pressure will help...
