Elections and Spooks
Saturday 9th May 2015 7:56 pm

On Thursday night I stayed up for two and a half hours. By the time I went to bed the birds were singing and there were so few seats declared it was obvious nothing was going to happen for a while. Annoyingly I still woke up at 7am, despite having the day off. I could have slept all night and got up at 4am - I'd have had more sleep and seen more excitement. Still, it was exciting that we were down to the last 7 seats, near lunchtime, before there was a result. Even if it was a depressing result. To make it worse, one of my local results was all Conservative and the other was six-sevenths Conservative. But the UKIP candidates on the first all came bottom. And, for once, considering that I live in a Conservative safe seat, I actually felt like my vote counted.

I decided to go and see the Spooks film yesterday, to cheer me up. Then I realised that wouldn't work, so I went to keep myself awake and take my mind off things. It did, but it was depressing. It was good though. I liked that the main character was a 60 year old man - how many films can say that? And it had Harry being Harry, only without Ruth, even more so.

One of the things that depressed me was that they'd changed the Grid. I'd been watching series 10 to remind myself of the non-Harry and Ruth characters and in the film it has a completely different atmosphere. But then I watched some earlier series and it has a completely different atmosphere in those too. So it is very Spooks-like in that everything changes (except Harry).

I was going to say that watching older Spooks is less depressing because you can choose what to watch. So in series 10 I skipped all the Elena bits and both the deaths. And fell in love with Dimitri and watch series 9, minus the Lucas secret bits and deaths. But then I decided to go back to my favourite episode, I Spy Apocalypse. And now I'm depressed. It's such a good episode - I know it's not the end of the world, but it still feels like it.

Talking about Spooks (without spoilers)
Tuesday 25th October 2011 8:54 pm

I don't generally talk about Spooks much here because I know various people are behind or haven't seen earlier series and I hate to spoil people, or offer up temptation. The latter I discovered before series 8, so I read forums and therefore knew things I'd rather have waited for the episode to find out. But the last ever episode (sob!) made me want to talk about it. But I will endeavour to do so without spoilers. Read more...

What I’ve been up to
Tuesday 20th September 2011 8:25 pm

Last Wednesday I randomly got dizzy. Which is crap, but on the plus side, at least it wasn't this Wednesday, as that's when ballet starts again and I finished my Girl Saves Boy ficathon fic last Tuesday. Once I had the idea I sat down for an hour on Sunday evening, Monday evening and Tuesday evening and then it was done. Minus betaing obviously.

So my life for the past week has been very boring. Apart from discovering a big spider on my bed last night, which is the sort of excitement I can do without.

And Spooks is back, yay! Sadly only for six episodes. But this week's featured Dayna from Blake's 7 (I spent the whole of the first scene she was in trying to work out if it was her). When I went on the website to check the credits I realised I knew why I recognised Elena - she was the Borg Queen. Only First Contact was quite a long time ago.

Being organised
Monday 17th November 2008 11:00 pm

I finally managed to get myself out of holiday mode and cleaned the house yesterday. It's hard to motivate myself to do it when I know I'm going to be moving out of it, but I'll be even less motivated when I'm not living in it, and the dirtier it is then, the worse it's going to be to clean. But it does all look so much better now I have cleaned it.

I also finished the book I started while I was away and it felt never-ending. I'm now a third of the way through The Graveyard book. I have two piles of books from the ones I bought in Canada and the Pratchett I finished just before I went. They're just the right size to fit my laptop on in front of the TV, so I can plug the TV into it. Now I've changed the books the two piles are more level too.

I made the mistake, when I got back, of watching all four Spooks episodes, which included the one from BBC3. So although I put it on last Monday because I was too tired to take it in much the first time, it's not the same as watching it new. So now I am back on watching them on Mondays because Monday needs something to look forward to, since I only watch SJA every other week. Suffice to say I enjoyed tonight's, even if I spent most of it wondering where I knew the bad guy from. Turns out it was one of the recent Poirots.

And just to make all the other people doing Yuletide jealous: I have a first draft of mine. At 1200 words I'm doing better than last year where I managed 1006 (but any padding to that one would have been just that, padding). I'm aiming to get it finished by the end of the week and hopefully writing every night will get me back into it and who knows, I might even get round to the requests I asked for back in June that are sitting in my inbox...

Spooks and SJA (spoilers for SJA)
Monday 22nd October 2007 9:44 pm

Tonight I travelled in time and watched tomorrow night's Spooks through the magic of digital TV and my PVR. I don't think it was as exciting as last week's ep, but it will be interesting to see what the repercussions of it will be. I wouldn't be Harry for anything, though, he has such a hard job.

The most interesting thing in it was when one of the spies introduced herself to a member of the public using the false name of 'Bernice'. Which made me sit up because that's not exactly a common name. Then when said member of the public starting speaking I thought she sounded awfully like Lisa Bowerman. And sort of looked like her, but she didn't say much and wasn't shown in a very clear light. I happened to not quite stop it after the trailer for next week's episode and discovered there were credits (since when were there credits on Spooks?) and it was her. I can't believe that name was coincidence.

Then I watched SJA: Warriors of the Kudlak. SPOILERS follow:

Tuesday 16th October 2007 9:20 pm

A bit of a round-up of things I've been watching. And not watching in one case.

In Doctor Who, I've been working my way through The Key to Time and recently finished The Androids of Tara, which was okay but not particularly exciting. But, there was fencing at the end. Some of which was actually proper fencing, even if they were just playing about with parrying and riposting at one point. And their moves were all far too big. But, it's still a lot more realistic than a lot of the sword fighting you see on TV.

I'm sure amazon changed my rental DVD list around, but it meant I got to see Revelation of the Daleks, which was my first Sixth Doctor story. I haven't been putting him off for any reason, I just haven't got to him. I liked the Doctor and Peri and the interactions between them. I hated the story, but then I'm not that excited about Daleks and I haven't really been that keen on any Dalek story.

After that I went back to the Second Doctor. I listened to The Moonbase while I was away, which I enjoyed - not least because I had no idea it would have Cybermen in it. I'm three-quarters of the way through The Tomb of the Cybermen now. The Cybermen don't look scary, since they're obviously just wearing material. And some of them don't have chest plates. But I love their voices, their appropriately horrible. I'm really liking Jamie so far, and Two. Jury's still out on Victoria since this is only the second story I've seen her in and I don't feel like I know her yet.

There was SJA on TV yesterday. My PVR decided not to record it though. It did that once before with Life on Mars. The BBC iPlayer, which doesn't quite work anyway last time I tried it, only has the BBC1 episode on. So next week I'm going to watch the BBC1 episode followed by the CBBC episode - so both parts of Warriors of the Kudlak in one go. Which I was considering anyway because I hate cliffhangers.

Then tonight there was Spooks. And another Harry, they're breeding like Jacks. I wasn't convinced at all about them doing one 10 week story, rather than 10 (or however many episodes they usually have) stories. So this one did take a while to start up but it was exciting once it had. How on earth they're going to come back from that I don't know. The strangest thing, though, was the Glenister brothers between them being in all Kudos productions - Philip Glenister is in Life on Mars & Ashes to Ashes, and Robert Glenister is in Hustle and Spooks.

I know the next episode starts soon, but everyone at work just watches the BBC1 one because the BBC3 one is too late at night. And since I'm out most Tuesdays, I'm taping it to watch Monday (plus if the PVR decides not to tape it again, I have the BBC1 one to fall back on, since the BBC hate repeating things).

Monday 13th November 2006 7:05 pm

Why is it that there are only about four things worth watching on TV, but two of them are on at the same time? Whose bright idea was it to put the Science Fiction Britannica up against the series finale of Spooks? Annoyingly, Spooks is easier to tape but then I have to watch it tonight so I don't get spoiled at work tomorrow.

And ISIHAC started again tonight (which I didn't realise cos The Bill forum's been down, I suspect) but that's going to have to wait till later in the week to listen to.

Bunny island
Tuesday 10th October 2006 6:20 pm

I only came up with my adventure weekend post after I saw a short program on Friday night about an island of bunnies: Skomer Island, off South West Wales. It's open from April to October but given that we are talking about Wales here (although it apparently has less rain than the mainland) it's going to be better in summer. Plus there should be more baby bunnies about. So that's something I'm going to do one weekend next summer. Expect lots of bunny photos. (Incidentally, the one in my icon my dad took when they went to Monkey World - they have a few bunnies there, so dad took some photos of them specially for me).

On the theme of bunnies, this reminded me that the Donkey Sanctuary not far from here has bunnies. You can only really get to it by car, and as it's nearly on the way to Tescos I ought to be able to drive there myself. So at some point, in the light, I'm going to up there to prove I can, then see about being able to help out with the bunnies.

On an entirely different note, last night's Spooks, noooooooooooooo! I'd say more but anything I tried to say non-spoilery and therefore cryptic would give the game away to Melli. I had started on the second draft of my SJ ficathon fic just before it, intending to continue later but I forgot Spooks tends to make you not able to think afterwards. I think I need it on DVD.

On the plus side, my ZoneAlarm is now fixed. Phew!

Friday 29th September 2006 9:48 pm

I'm feeling really brain-dead now and completely knackered. I've just driven to Tescos, which is ten minutes away. Except that I went with a friend of mine who lives ten minutes in the opposite direction. And then I got confused on the way and we went the back way. In the end I was out for two and a half hours.

There's a war on between the Jamie and the Sarah supporters on the drabble tag, so I've been busy writing Sarah drabbles. There's a list on the SJ comm, so come and play! Since the last time I posted about it I've written Ten/Josh/Sarah, Sarah/Jack/Josh, Harry/Jack, Ten/Josh, Six/Sarah, Sarah/girl!Doctor, Two/Sarah, Eight/Sarah, Seven/Sarah, Sarah/UNIT.

I've been meaning to talk about stuff off the telly all week. Firstly, Atlantis, which is doing terrible things to me. The last one I saw I couldn't work out why Jack & Elizabeth weren't talking about the night they had sex until I remembered that actually, that wasn't in an episode. They did have serious UST going on though. I was thinking to myself, they probably were going to end up sleeping together. Except that she and Sheppard had some serious UST going on, then he was having UST and Teyla and Ronon, who were also having UST with each other. And it reaches the point where I'm wondering if there's anyone on Atlantis that doesn't ship well.

I'm watching Spooks on BBC1 because last year people at work discovered if you're a week ahead on BBC3 you can't talk about it at work because everyone else is a week behind. Plus I was too tired this Monday to stay up late enough to watch it. Anyway, it is exciting and I am enjoying it. Not entirely sure about what they're doing with Ruth and Harry but I suppose we'll have to wait and see about that one. I like Ros in that she's quite different from everyone else. Plus she's played by Hermione Norris, who I can quite hate, at least not yet.

I'm off to Collectormania in Milton Keynes tomorrow. There's no-one I want to see there, or at least no-one famous. I'm going to see a friend of mine from uni whose parents live there, and I don't think I've seen him in over a year. Sunday I might keel over after a two hour driving lesson followed by swimming.

Some updates
Monday 25th September 2006 7:29 pm

That previous post is viewable on LJ if you're on my friends-list. Otherwise it's viewable on my blog if you know the name of my cat, or ask me what the password is. It's only not visible to everyone to stop certain people seeing it - it's obvious who when you know what it's about.

First day back at work today - feels like I never left. My boss stunningly failed to do the one thing he needed to on one of my projects. Is it Christmas holidays yet?

I really enjoyed Spooks - I can't believe they started it just as I went away.

I realised I wrote some fic (all Doctor Who) and forgot to mention it here. There was the prequel to Dream a Little Dream that didn't originally start off as a prequel: The Last Dinner. The sequel(s) (I may split it into two parts) are currently being plotted, since there seems to be rather a lot of plot. I swear it multiplies.

Then there's the drabble to get the whole soapy idea of Sarah getting pregnant with Harry's baby (why should it always be the doctor's? :)) out of my head: Same Idea, Different Father. Except that hhertzof and I 'encouraged' each other and now it's turned into a wip: Doctor Who: The Soap Opera, Chapter 1: Telling Harry with a nice soapy plot to come. Look at it this way, at least none of it is going to be in anything else.

What I should now be writing is my piece for the Sarah Jane gen ficathon. I could have quite happily written any of the prompts but one of them in particular I was hoping someone would write. Not thinking that someone would be me. Hmm.

I still can't breathe but now I've seen my doctor (who is very nice) and now I have drugs. Very nice, but cost an arm and a leg. I have a BUPA-like thing through work but of course the one thing they won't cover is prescriptions - the one thing that would actually be useful.

My mother turns out to be quite cool - I rang to tell my parents about Ireland and my mum updated me on the Doctor Who rumours. I think she has too much time and she was surfing looking for stuff about Torchwood! So I can now confirm that it is starting on 21st/22nd/28th October on BBC1/2/3 at 9pm. I'm crossing my fingers for any date that's not a Tuesday or Saturday. Or Thursday once I can drive and can go back to fencing (I can't wait now).

The West Wing and Spooks
Thursday 27th October 2005 10:18 pm

I've been quite good this week at catching up on things, although that did mean spending an hour this evening catching up on e-mails! I even wrote a drabble for tolkien_weekly: Rivendell Revisited. I don't remember the last time I managed one of those!

This weeks West Wing, that I watched on Tuesday, was excellent. There was a great bit at the beginning where there was a good few minutes with no talking, no music, nothing. I want to know what CJ and Toby were thinking during that time. I was nearly crying at the end, when CJ was too.

And then tonight's Spooks (which I've actually been in for, as it's half term for guitar lessons as well as for the schools) was really good. I wasn't expecting anything much, just a bit of [censored] moping, but I was pleasantly surprised. And nearly crying at the end of that one as well.

And it's nearly time to watch The Thick of It live!

Happy New Year
Tuesday 4th October 2005 7:50 pm

(Although I started writing this yesterday, so I'm technically a bit late with that, never mind)

You couldn't make it up: Drunken prank led to armed siege

I had no intention of seeing Serenity. I've seen 20mins of Firefly and that was enough. But there was an article about it in the latest SFX that mentioned they go to a remote place called Maidenhead. I mentioned it to Rotaract and there was a general concesus we'd have to check out this 'Maidenhead' place. (A small note - Maidenhead is a town not far from here. One of our members is going out with an ex-member of Maidenhead Rotaract).

I discovered today this WordPress blog has the best thing ever - search. We were having a Myers-Briggs discussion and I knew I had what I was on my blog somewhere but couldn't remember which month it was. But I searched for it and found it.

I'm really bad with names, it takes me a long time to learn them. For some reason I find it much easier if I see them written down - although if isn't pronounced as it's written that doesn't help. I struggled with who Weiss in Alias was for two series. I was seeing it written when people talked about him and assumed it was pronounced Veiss, and I couldn't remember anyone with that name.

I've seen someone called Halling mentioned paired with Beckett (Carson, not Sam, which doesn't help). I assumed it was the woman from Duet whose name begins with a C or K, but no, turns out Halling is a man. Is he actually on the series? Admittedly, it's taken me a series and a half to work out who Zelenka is.

I'm doing really badly on episode titles as well. I keep seeing episode tag fics, where they'll say it's set post 'Hot Zone' for example. Which is great. Except that doesn't really narrow it down very much. Which is why I started putting an episode guide on my site - I need it for me.

The way Lost introduces you to a character each episode is really handy because I'm learning a name per episode. I think I've learnt the same number now as I would have in the entire series. I did confuse myself though, as I temporarily named Sawyer, 'that guy' but then got confused and thought Adam was 'that guy'. I think the only ones I have temporary names for now are Adam, the pregnant girl who I think was Tess in Roswell High, that guy who's been in everything, the kid, the kid's dad, the dog, the one with silly hair. I've even managed to learn Shannon without her having an episode yet, which is pretty good going for me.

After the two-part starter for the latest Spooks series I realised there was a new character and I should make sure I remember his name. Needless to say I'd forgotten it a week later and I still can't remember. It's only one name and four episodes later it could be anything. Although the other week I couldn't for the life of me work out who this Fiona Adam was referring to was.

Manic Monday
Tuesday 12th October 2004 9:50 pm

I had a bad day yesterday. I was the first one up and discovered one of my landlady's cat had crapped on the kitchen floor. Despite there being two litter trays in there, and they had access to outside. I'm quite glad I still don't have my sense of smell back.

Then at Tae Kwon Do (I ache after that in parts of my legs I didn't know existed) I got kicked in the throat. Which is really unpleasant. It still feels funny when I swallow sometimes. That became the least of my problems when I got home, though, because I banged my head really hard on the underside of the stairs. My head still hurts, and I'm really hoping concussion won't kick in tomorrow.

And then I got to my room to find my video wasn't recording Spooks (so pressed record, but I had missed the first fifteen minutes). I had a play with it later and found it had recorded over Rosemary and Thyme (taped in case it was the episode they filmed here). Well, actually, the first ten minutes were there. Which I can't make sense of at all.

I had to tell people not to talk about Spooks today at work until I could see it. I did get round to watching the latest Enterprise. Which wasn't as bad as I feared. Still crap, of course, but it could have been worse. Possibly.

I'm also really tired because I keep waking up much earlier than I need to. It doesn't seem to make much difference what time I go to bed, I still wake up after seven hours - and usually at least once in the night as well. I can survive on seven hours sleep but not indefinitely. It's driving me mad.

And my cold's still lingering, which isn't helping my throat because it doesn't like being dry at the moment, but the not being able to smell is quite nice. Or would be if it wasn't for the fact that the only thing I can smell is cigarette smoke. Pleasant.

The Indispensable Person
Wednesday 13th August 2003 7:04 pm

This poem's been going round my head for a while now and I've finally remembered to look it up. I vaguely remember reading it when I was little, although I didn't know what indispensable meant at the time.

Sometimes when you're feeling important,
Sometime when your ego's in bloom,
Sometime when you take it for granted
You're the best qualified in the room,

Sometime when you feel that your going
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these simple directions
And see how they humble your soul.

Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it up to your wrist,
Pull it out and the hole that's remaining
Is a measure of how you'll be missed.

You can splash all you wish when you enter,
You may stir up the water galore,
But stop, and you'll find in no time
It looks quite the same as before.

The moral in this quaint example
Is to do just the best that you can.
Be proud of yourself, but remember...
There's no indispensable person!

I watched an episode of Smallville (Nicodemus) the other day and it reminded me of something. In it, Clark walks in on his parents kissing, embarrassed, he turns round and says 'I didn't see that'. Which is what it's like in real life - you don't want to think about your parents doing that sort of thing. At least when you're old enough to know what it all means. And yet there are so many fan fics I've read where they've had kids quite happy - in fact loving - this sort of thing. Admittedly, the sort of fics I'm talking about tend to involve the Mary Sue kids of two characters the writer ships for. But still. I don't read them any more though.

I can't quite work out how I've ended up reading Josh/Donna West Wing fan fic either. There I was, happily working my way through Clark/Lex stuff. The silliest thing is though - I don't ship for them! I don't ship for any of the characters really. I just want to see all of them, except the Vice Pres who annoys me for some strange reason. I love CJ though, she's cool.

I'm not going to be in for The Bill tonight so I am going to have to tape it and convince myself to watch it before tomorrow's episode. This is bearing in mind I haven't seen Monday's Angel or Spooks yet (Angel I've seen before, plus I don't think it's that good an episode, but the last in the series of Spooks I have no excuse for) and I have five Smallville episodes sitting around waiting for me to watch. The trouble is, there just aren't enough hours in the day. Not least because I need an early night - I've been going to bed late because there just aren't enough hours in the day. I need a day off just to catch up.
