It's been hot the past few days, so if I hadn't needed to do anything during that time, I didn't do it. If I was in, I just read or caught up on TV and was hot. As was Missy - hamsters don't do well if it's too hot and they don't like the humidity either. But she's enjoyed frozen peas and frozen carrots and she's been outside. Because it's been so hot I've had the back door open while she's out playing, so of course she went out onto the doorstep and then fell off. After a few times falling off she was happy about where she was and tried to wander off. At one point she found a pebble and decided she wanted it.

Monday I had one of my (on average) two days a year when I wished my car had air conditioning. I did some stargazing from my back door, where I was sat because it was cooler and I could keep an eye on Missy escaping. Not that I could see many stars because even by the time I went to bed late it still wasn't properly dark.

Now, though, the weather is much better, I have a couple of days off work and I am catching up on things.

Tennis is crazy. Queens sometimes has those years when all the seeds go out in the first couple of rounds, so we were probably overdue one. But I feel like the third, second and first seeds all going out one after the other must be some sort of record. And a whole load withdrew due to injuries. But it'll be interesting to get a winner outside of the usual suspects - although a few former champions are still in the draw.

Unconventional Courtship is on again. I spent some time at the weekend with the Generator and ended up signing up with this summary:
310) Night of the Living Wed by Michele Hauf
Dayna Mellanby and Del Tarrant's evening turns deadly when some uninvited guests show up at their friend's party — a horde of hungry zombies. The couple is in a fight for their lives when a new, heroic side of Tarrant emerges, and he vows to protect Dayna no matter the cost….

Obviously explosions will follow. I will probably change the zombies, but I went with this one because it was just so perfect for them. And will be different to what I've written for it before.

Updatey thing
Sunday 5th July 2015 9:12 pm

This time my week without updating has been due to a combination of tennis and weather. This week featured a few days with temperatures in the high 20s and one where it went up to 33C (and was humid). My house has only just cooled down. I am really lucky to have air conditioning at work, but it's really hard to sleep in the heat, so I've just been getting tireder as the week went on.

This was the first week of Wimbledon, featuring wall-to-wall tennis. Well, nearly. It's generally the afternoon by the time the radio (and show courts) get going, so I've listened to a lot and seen the evening matches when I've been in. Yesterday there was eleven hours of tennis, including one point where I watched the James Ward match on TV and Jonny Marray in the doubles on my computer. And then missed most of the Murray match because they changed over to BBC1 for no reason and I didn't realise, so watched some of the all-French match on the red button.

So that's been my week really. On the hottest day I went to ballet, in the hottest dance studio (it was much hotter than in the house, with was hot). Remix went live and so far I've only read one story. I will get to the rest - probably like I'll get to everything else when Wimbledon's finished and I don't quite know what to do with my time.

I never could get the hang of Thursdays
Thursday 26th June 2014 8:45 pm

Today has really been one of those days. This morning, I got as far as getting in the car before realising that I'd left the bags I need to take with me to the supermarket in the lounge. My garage is not next to the house, so it's quite a way to go back to the house to get them.

Then this week at work I had a few things to do, nicely spaced out. Except the time when I received them kept getting delayed - the time they need to be launched doesn't, of course. So I got to do it all this morning. One of them I was supposed to tell someone I'd done and only remembered an hour later. One of them I'd got done and out of the way and then the client made a change at 4.30pm. And then I left late because someone was having a problem with something that needed sorting right then. We eventually found the problem was that a piece of script had decided that 12=4 for no explicable reason.

Just as I left the office it started raining. Once I left the car park, it stopped. It started again when I got home and went to put the bins out. At which point I found a dead blackbird between the bins. So I had to deal with his blackbird in the rain while having a panic attack (because I am necrophobic). I couldn't just leave it there because it was too sheltered to be found by cats or Red Kites. I wasn't prepared to dig it a grave in solid soil in the rain, so I dumped it in the compost bin, where the ants can play with it.

And then of course when I wanted to sit down and watch tennis between cooking dinner and when eating dinner it was raining at Wimbledon. I haven't had much Wimbledon during the day at work because they stop early for the football and spend most of the day discussing the football. I know far more about Suarez's ban than I ever needed to know.

On the plus side, at least the rain was early enough for Wimbledon to put the roof on, so I got to watch some evening Federer action.

The effect of wind on garage doors
Wednesday 5th February 2014 9:47 pm

Today I worked from home and didn't go to ballet (for the fourth week in a row - give that you can buy five weeks at a time if I'd had a crystal ball I'd have just not signed up for this half term). Although it was nice to have a day when I could work from the sofa whenever I liked and an evening in (which included fixing my bedroom light switch, although we accidentally managed to get it upside down).

The trouble was the wind. I was doing well with getting my car out of the garage because I had it in the centre before it was that far back. Sadly, at that point the garage door blew closed. I squeezed out the car, opened it, made sure it was up as far as it would go (which is hard because I have to stand on tip toes and stretch one arm to do it because it was designed for tall people*).

I stood and watched it while the wind blew and concluded that it would stay. So I got back in the car, started it back up, reversed it and didn't get out of the garage (fortunately) before it blew closed again. I took that as a sign and gave up.

This evening the wind sounded even worse, so I decided it wasn't worth trying it. The only other way to have got to ballet was by walking, which I didn't fancy in this weather or in the dark (I do it quite happily in the summer when it's light). Theoretically all you need to do is to drive the car out quickly between the gusts, but you can't tell if the wind's gusting from inside the car inside the garage. And earlier this evening there was a lot of gusting close together, which I wouldn't have liked to predict.

So in future if the weather forecast says it's going to be really windy, I'll be leaving the car out!

*Definition of tall people: anyone taller than me

Wind and work
Wednesday 25th December 2013 3:50 pm

Monday night's wind didn't do much for my back fence. Although I opened the curtains and watered the plants without noticing. It was only when I went to leave for work that I noticed the view out the back was a bit different to normal. Fortunately, it's my neighbour's fence, so I don't have to worry about it.

Despite it being quiet at work I managed to spend all of Tuesday morning working. Then it quietened down. But although in theory I have three bank holidays and three days when the office is closed (including today) I still need to do some work.

Today I woke up annoyingly early, drove in the rain with sunglasses on (it was bright and sunny when I left) and am now copying the files on my netbook so I can change to a different Linux distro.

I have read a grand total of one fic in Yuletide: mine (excitingly, I have another waiting for me in Yuletide Madness). It's R for Richard and is in The Ten Stupidest Things I've Heard Since Richard III's Remains Were Identified (Blog Post). I asked for something completely ridiculous (as far as I can remember anyway - sign ups were ages ago) and what I got was really utterly ridiculous and I love it.

Too hot to post
Saturday 20th July 2013 10:02 pm

It's been too hot to do anything for the past week. Last Sunday I even struggled to read or watch anything on TV that was longer than half an hour. But today it was a nice, reasonable temperature, which has been so much more pleasant. My washing still dried, but I also cleaned the house and went out and did some gardening during the day.

On the plus side, my hayfever has definitely improved. Gardening late in the evening (on the days when it's been cool enough to) hasn't helped it much, but I'm still better now than when I started taking the medicine and I've finished a bottle and didn't buy another.

I also saw a hedgehog in my garden on Tuesday! I had got back from Rotary and opened the back door and it looked as surprised to see me as I was to see it. I thought about whether there was enough light to take a photo of it and whether the flash would scare it, but I went to get my camera anyway. By the time I made it back to the back door it had gone off down the garden a bit. After a while I couldn't see it in the dark, but I could hear it scampering along the gravel. So that was a nice bit of excitement.

While gardening I've been listening to audios. I got through May's Big Finish Blake's 7 box set and I've just finished Counter Measures 2. Which has made them go by so fast. Usually I listen in the car, so it takes a few days to get through one CD, but I can't while it's this hot because I have to turn the volume up to ridiculous levels when the car windows are open - and I even have to open them in the mornings because putting a hot car in a garage heats it up, along with the sun shining straight at it in the mornings.

It's due to get hotter again tomorrow, but the week's not looking quite so bad as last week, as long as I believe the BBC's forecast and not Weather Undergound's.

Various things
Sunday 28th April 2013 5:54 pm

There are a few things I thought about talking about, but none of them really merit a whole post, so this is a post of little bits.

Diana Rigg is on Doctor Who next week! I am very excited. I might have to get my Avengers DVDs out and work out which episodes I haven't seen. Edit: Her daughter Rachael Stirling is also in it. Which meant nothing to me until Dad pointed out that she was the girl in Boy Meets Girl, and she was really good in that.

After thinking about giving up on Blockbuster they finally sent me The Bill series 2. Of the four episodes on it, it was the end of episode 3 that made me think I'd seen it before and halfway through episode four when I knew I'd seen it before. But I have no idea if I've seen the rest of series 2, so I'll just carry on (if they'll send it to me).

It's really annoying that it was so nice in the week and then the weather's been so crap this weekend.

I have my assignment for Not Prime Time. Not sure what I'm going to write yet, but I'm spending the week percolating it in my brain before I start. I have until Wimbledon to finish, which seems like it's a long way away, but it's really not that far.

This week
Saturday 28th April 2012 1:44 pm

This week has mostly consisted of rain. And the fun yesterday of tipping out the puddle of water collected in my bin because the binmen persist in leaving the lid open after they've emptied them. And the even more fun of spending five minutes on Wednesday morning trying to get the garage door open long enough to get inside. How it eventually stayed open long enough to get the car out (and closed once I had) I don't know. But after that my car had to spend a couple of nights outside in the rain because there's only so many times I can do that.

I've also been reading Remix stories. I'd entirely forgotten what mine was, I finished it so long ago. Now I've been reminded about it I want to talk about it, but can't do that until the authors are revealed tomorrow/Monday. But someone remixed a Doctor Who/SJA crossover fic I wrote last year as New Horizons (the Doctor in the House Remix). It's got a whole load of great Sky characterisation in it. And I really want to know who wrote it and whether some of the references in it were because they know me, they read the fandoms list on my website or coincidence.

I have also been working on the second draft of my Big Bang fic. After I wrote the first draft I realised the plot makes no sense and it's not spaced out well at all. So I spent time re-working it, with tables to work out who does what in response to what. Hopefully, when I finish the second draft and read it through it won't be too bad and I'll just need to go back and sort out the words, rather than the plot. Not least because I'm also intending to sign up for [info]not-primetime/[info]not_primetime and the deadline is Wimbledon. My deadline for myself for getting my Big Bang to beta is Wimbledon. Which really isn't that far away...

Good things today
Saturday 8th January 2011 2:59 pm

My mood is totally affected by the weather - today is warm and sunny and spring-like (if only because a temperature above freezing feels warm) and I'm happy. Also, [info]fandom_stocking went live today, so I had lots of nice things in it this morning:

An Ian and Barbara icon from [info]lindenharp

Hush-hush: A Harry Potter fic featuring Sirius from [info]trovia

Rainy Day Tales (part 2 & part 3): a DW/Press Gang fic from [info]lost_spook

A sweet Luke-centred fic from [info]cosmic_llin

A graphic of my choice from [info]arenee1999

An IOU from [info]carawj

A Harry (Sullivan) picspam from [info]livii

And happy new years from [info]dbskyler and [info]eponymous_rose

Next year I will make my request list better - having read lots of other people's with an eye to writing something I have a much better idea of what's useful to put in there.

I will post up what I wrote at some point, but I want to wait until people have seen their own first. And I wrote 15 ficlets between 100 and 1100 words, so they'll take a little while to upload.

The week
Saturday 26th December 2009 2:38 pm

I thought this last week would be quite quiet, I'd get lots of things done... I don't know why I thought that. It didn't help that I kept waking up at 6am - except on Friday when I woke up at 5am. Monday it snowed during the day, and I was sick of waiting in the freezing cold for a freezing cold bus and getting home half an hour later than I would have if I'd driven, so I drove to work on Monday. I contemplated leaving my car at work, but decided to drive home. It was the scariest thing I'd ever done - not helped by two police cars and two ambulances going past me in the opposite direction with their blue lights flashing. They couldn't go above 20mph the same as the rest of us, though, so the blue flashing lights didn't exactly do them much good.

But now I know what it's like, I won't be driving in the snow again. But I'd only ever seen it snow and settle during the day once before, so I assumed it was a freak event and it would just go back to snowing in the night again. But I also live further North than I grew up, and there it snows every year, which I find utterly ridiculous weather, but moving back South would mean I was living far from anywhere, so I supposed I'm stuck with it. If the Gulf Stream ever goes away, we're seriously buggered.

On the plus side, I have a week off work and it is now Boxing Day, which is miles better than Christmas Day. Except that for some strange reason all the good TV is on on New Years Day.

And I have a Yuletide fic! The site's really slow, so it's best visited in the mornings before the Americans get up, but it's a Quantum Leap fic: Returning Home and Meeting Memories for the First Time. Reading through the rest of the archive is taking time, not just because of the slowness, but also because I find the contrast between the text and the background gives me a headache. But fortunately, the other week I came across a site called Readability, where you can decide what you want the page to look like, then create a bookmarklet. So all I have to do, once the fic is loaded, is press on the bookmark, then hey, presto, I can read it! And to think that when I found it I never thought it would be useful...

An update about me
Saturday 19th December 2009 9:47 am

Which I've been meaning to write for the past week...

It must be spring
Friday 20th March 2009 9:48 pm

I am freezing. But then I am only wearing one jumper. I have stupid heating that comes in on or off and as it's so warm during the day I have it off, otherwise I wake up boiling. Because it's still really cold at night, it means it's quite cold in the mornings and evenings, plus my body clock seems to have decided it's BST a bit early.

I'm definitely still ill. I put on a New Who episode and the beginning credits are the worst thing ever. Definitely not recommended if you're dizzy. I have until Wednesday to get better, then I go back to the doctors, who are pretty much incapable of diagnosing anything I can't work out for myself, so I'm not hopeful, but I just want to get better. I want my life back again.

I am going to decide what car I want this weekend, which'll probably knock me out for the weekend with the half hour drive each way. But I definitely need a car that's less effort to drive, because part of the reason I didn't for so long while I was ill was because I didn't have the energy to turn the wheel. The trouble is that they don't make custom cars and what I really want is a Toyota Yaris at the front and a Honda Jazz at the back. And no, I don't want James May to make me one.

I have discovered the source of one of the funny noises my car makes! I currently have four: one is something rattling in the dashboard, one is a squeaking noise when I break, two are squeaking noises when I'm going along. The squeaking noises are all louder with the window open, which hasn't really been improving my drive home in a stuffy car with the sun right in my eyes. But while I was backing my car up after I'd turned it off, by the method of sticking my foot out of the door and giving it a push, as it's on a slight slope, I discovered that when I move the car, it creaks. I'm quite looking forward to owning a quieter car.

I thought I'd try out a DVD in my computer this evening. It took me ages to work out which program it had installed as the DVD playing program and then I found I hate it with a passion. It's rubbish. It takes over so much that you can hardly run any other program at the same time, and it takes the taskbar away so you can't get to any other program (alt+tab refused to work). I couldn't work out how to fast forward in any useful way and there's no right click menu to tell it that actually you want subtitles/commentary. I was looking forward to getting an upgrade from WinDVD, but it turns out WinDVD was the pinnacle of DVD playing programs (and to be fair, I loved it, it's far better than a DVD player). Am I right in thinking it's the free version and PowerDVD is the paid for one that lets you take screenshots? Can I get it somewhere? Can I go back to Windows 98? (actually, since I have it on a virtual machine on this computer, the answer to the last one is yes, technically).

Monday 2nd February 2009 10:49 pm

It snowed overnight, and during the day, so I got to the bus to work on the basis that it was warmer and I wouldn't have to walk so far. Plus my car doesn't like the cold or the rain, so I dread to think what it would think of what's essentially cold rain. It comes from a warmer climate like me, so it's not used to all this snow business.

And I didn't get a day off either. I've never had work or school closed for snow and it never snowed the whole time I was uni. Just the year before I went and the year after I left.

According to the forecasts it's supposed to do this pretty much all week, so I'll be leaving work on time every day (the buses go once an hour, which is crap). And probably not making it back to fencing, again.

Is ded of work and weather
Sunday 3rd August 2008 9:00 am

It was at 4.30pm on Friday that I thought my brain might dribble out of my ears. And there was still an hour of work to go at that point. I did quite a bit of overtime last week, which has something to do with it. The weather isn't helping. At the moment it's slightly too hot for a quilt and slightly too cold for a sheet. At least, it is in the night. Once the sun rises I wake up boiling and have to put my sheet on. And consequently wake up really early.

I also seem to be allergic to something. Last night once it got dark I blew my nose every five minutes before I shut the windows and decided I'd rather be hot.

And what's really annoying me at the moment is WP keeps logging me out, even if I don't close Firefox and even though I tick the 'Remember me' box. My fanfic blog was fine, until I decided to check it this morning and it won't let me in at all.

Monday 12th November 2007 10:43 pm

Winter seems to have arrived. It's been cold enough the past week that I've contemplated getting my scarf out. Although that's mostly because my coat leaves a nice gap at the top for the cold to get in. I think it might be cold enough for a hat as well. The trouble is that once you give into the cold that's it, you can't go back to not wearing a hat or scarf because you get used to being warm.

Mind you, it'll all be a bit academic come Friday because I'll be dressed up warm to collect for Children in Need, although since I'm collecting from cars it does mean getting to run around, so you do get a bit warmer. And as long as it doesn't chuck it down like last year it won't be that bad.

The worst part is driving because even though I have driving gloves and I've turned the car onto winter so it takes five minutes to be merely cold rather than freezing instead of the ten minutes it takes on the summer setting, it only takes one journey for my hands to get so dry they crack.

But we have had really nice weather - blue skies and sunshine, with only a bit of wind and rain and clouds - and I like the winter when it's really cold and sunny. As long as I'm walking somewhere and not waiting for a bus. And at least I don't have to de-ice the car every morning before work.

Interesting date
Friday 20th July 2007 7:39 pm

I missed it, but half an hour ago it was 20:07 on 20-07 2007

I was woken up this morning by thunder. I then discovered it was also pouring it down with rain. My feet didn't get dry till I got home. And although it didn't seem like an unusual amount of rain, it seems to have caused loads of disruption. I'm now getting the bus to Oxford to go to the Harry Potter midnight launch as the person who offered to drive is still on a train somewhere. I don't want to drive because I'm confused about driving round Oxford, and can't drive after midnight.

There's also been a really strange creaky banging sound round here. It started up late last night and stopped after I went to bed. It had gone this morning, but was back when I got home. It's just recently stopped, about two and a half hours later, when my upstairs neighbours got home... I have no idea what it is but the two events must be connected.

Plans for tomorrow are: hoovering (did the rest of the cleaning tonight), swimming and reading Harry Potter.

Rain, rain, go away
Tuesday 3rd July 2007 10:22 pm

It's been another frustrating day. Play started at 11am but since it didn't look like the matches were going to be that interesting, I didn't bother with the tennis till lunchtime. The minute I got myself set up to watch it, it started raining. They started playing an hour and a half later, which is not helpful. And then I spent the afternoon getting up and down a lot, so kept putting the headphones down and not putting them back on straight away. Which meant that every time I sat down to listen to the tennis it rained, and whenever I stopped for a long period, they played.

It was quite interesting to hear the thunder over the radio. It thundered here an hour after it did there, but that was all it did. As a result I saw, I think, one Nadal game before they went off again. And that was it for the day. Why they didn't play on Sunday I don't know, because they might not have been that far behind after Saturday, but they certainly are now - starting on all courts at 11am and using every single courts - including ones that don't have a number.

I finished The Myth Makers, which is Vicki's last episode and I'm all sad because I liked Vicki. And I am discovering Doctor Who is a bad influence - it's really hard to type doctor with a small d.

Wimbledon and Doctor Who (Spoilers for Last of the Time Lords)
Saturday 30th June 2007 8:07 pm

It's been a really frustrating day. It's the one day of Wimbledon you get to spend the whole day watching tennis, not just in the evening. But instead we got nearly an hour of one woman thrashing another. I could have watched a different match on 301 or 302 but frankly, it would have just been the same. I would have been quite happy watching tennis from 12 till 9ish, then watched Doctor Who, but it wasn't to be.

The only good thing about it was I got time to clean the house and make flapjacks and they decided just before Doctor Who started that there would be no more play today, so I was free to watch it live. Although I shouldn't have done because I had five minutes of Galaxy 4 part 2 to go, which was a bit surreal to listen to afterwards.

There were some things in the episode that I liked and other things that annoyed me, but I'll put them behind a more since they contain SPOILERS:

Rain, rain go away
Saturday 23rd June 2007 4:33 pm

I like thunderstorms when it's been really hot and you can stand outside, watch the lightning and go 'please rain'. It's a lot less good when it's rained every single day since I got back and isn't really very warm.

I just did my finances and I have paid myself back the money I owed myself to go to Romania! So I now have no money till I get paid on Friday, but this is an improvement on minus amounts. Now I need to save some so I can buy a new TV and have a very cheap long weekend away somewhere in Britain (possibly Cardiff, possibly somewhere else if I think of anywhere else reasonably close I want to go that's not in Dorset) in September.

I discovered that BT will give you a bill in pdf. I've had paperless bills for a while but I've always just downloaded my calls as a csv file. I don't know how long the pdfs have been there, but it doesn't help that they like to move everything on the site round on a monthly basis (or that's what it seems like - I can never find anything). Looking at it, I discovered that they're charging me £1.50 for the privilege of not paying by direct debit (so I actually pay the amount I owe them, not the amount they'd like me to owe them), which is a bit much. It doesn't help that they also charge £10 a month just for the line - which I use for my broadband connection, and occasionally for phone calls. My calls this month were particularly expensive at 71p.
