Science geeks in media

This is sort of the opposite to my last post. I've been listening to Big Finish's UNIT box set and it just annoyed me as the episodes went on. I know lots of people like Osgood, but I've never been that much of a fan. One of my problems is her asthma, which is never that well portrayed in TV anyway. The other problem is her glasses. It's as if there's a rule that says that any scientist must wear glasses. The asthma's a bonus. It's like being a scientist must mean there's something wrong with you.

The other reason it's been grating recently is I had a sudden urge to rewatching some Wizards vs Aliens. Benny is a scientist, which means he wears glasses (the actor does not). And when there's an episode with one of the alien scientist appearing human, he wears glasses.

Stop it with the glasses. It doesn't automatically mean they're clever. It means they can't see very well. The two things are not linked. Well, as far as I know. But unless someone's done some counting and worked out the percentage of glasses wearers is much higher among clever people, I'd expect to see the same number of clever glasses wearers and less-clever glasses wearers. And there's not many non-scientists wearing glasses on TV...

Wizards vs Aliens
Thursday 31st October 2013 8:37 pm

Last night I watched the first story of the second series of Wizards vs Aliens. Which was full of The Bill regulars. Well, by full I mean three. But one of them is a regular in Wizards vs Aliens (Michael Higgs who played Eddie Santini and has now gone quite grey). But this time there was also Jaye Griffiths (DI Sally Johnson) and Cyril Nri (Supt Adam Okaru).

Aside from the beginning, which was telling people who hadn't seen series 1 of the plot, and towards the end where I needed a sick bucket and didn't defeat the aliens at all (except for the aliens also needing a sick bucket), I liked it. I am very tempted to buy series 1 on DVD, not least because it is only £8. I don't like expensive DVDs.

There were two bits that really bugged me about it, though. At one point Michael talks about a "wrench in the works" which is nicely alliterative, but the phrase is "spanner in the works". And then later he talks about a crowbar or tyre iron. I've yet to work out what a tyre iron is (I thought it was a car jack, but apparently not). If I don't know what it is, then how are the kids it's aimed at supposed to know? And I only learnt what a wrench was in the past year or so - they always used to go on about Sgt Siler and his wrench at Stargate conventions and I just assumed it was a particularly big spanner.

Wizards vs Aliens
Wednesday 31st October 2012 8:08 pm

I watched the first episode (ie part 1 and part 2) of Wizards vs Aliens last night. It was obvious from the start that it was being done by the same people as The Sarah Jane Adventures because it looked the same. And it was almost an episode of SJA, just with magic instead of a sonic lipstick.

Overall I liked it. It was interesting how the magic works there and what's going on with the aliens. I'm not convinced they can spin the story over however many episodes it is, but we'll see.

I spent the whole time trying to work out where I recognised Michael (Tom's dad) from and I had convinced myself I had imagined it until I googled it and discovered he was Eddie Santini in The Bill. He's just gone grey since then and it makes him look different. Thanks to my googling I am also prepared for next week's episode, which will feature Jenny from Teachers, who was also in Doctor Who and Hustle.
