Summary: Sarah’s pregnant, Harry’s the father, see the title for an idea of what happens next.
Back at Harry's after their date, he went to make them coffee. Sarah let him, not telling him she was not going to be drinking hers. She had been feeling slightly ill since they left the restaurant and was desperately hoping it was going to go away even though it seemed unlikely she was going to feel well enough to put anything else in her stomach before the morning. She could always get Harry to take her home later, if she felt well enough to go anywhere else.
He had asked her how she was earlier in the evening, to which she had said she was fine. He had been giving her looks all night that told her he knew she was lying, but she had just stared back at him, daring him to say anything, and luckily he had got the hint and kept quiet. Fortunately he did not seem to have noticed anything that suggested dinner was making her feel ill.
She heard Harry putting the kettle on as she gingerly sat on the sofa. Perhaps if she did not move she would be all right. It was the smell of the coffee when he opened the jar that undid her and she ran to his bathroom to throw up.
By the time he got there she was sitting beside the toilet, still feeling terrible but at least not liable to be sick at any minute. Which she supposed was an improvement.
"Do you think you could get me a glass of water?" she asked, not trusting herself to get up yet, and he disappeared.
While he was gone she undid the button on her trousers so she could breathe. She supposed she could have worn a dress but it was the principle of the thing that it was possible to look dressed up in trousers. Besides, they hid the fact that her stomach was not quite as flat as it used to be. For once she was quite happy if people thought it was just fat. It would not work forever, though, and she was going to have to get creative with pins at some point.
Harry returned with some water and she drunk it, grateful to be rid of the nasty taste in her mouth and feeling better for it. He sat on the edge of the bath, there not being much floor space. Sarah pulled her knees up to her chest, rested her arms on them and her chin on top.
"I shouldn't have had such a big dinner," she said.
"How long has this been going on?" he asked.
"It's just morning sickness, it won't last forever. You should know that."
"Not much call for pregnancy knowledge in the Navy."
It might have been funny but she just sighed, not quite being able to muster up enough energy to smile, and continued to look at Harry's feet.
He was quiet after that and she finished off the water, to have something to do and an excuse not to talk. She heard him sigh, though, before he asked her, "Are you all right, old girl? You look pale."
"I have just been sick." It was a perfectly good reason not to look her usual self, she thought.
"You've looked like that all evening. You are eating all right?"
She look up at him, then. "Harry, I'm a grown woman, I can look after myself."
"Sorry. Can't help it, comes from being a doctor. And your friend."
"I'm sorry, Harry, I just...I don't want to make a big deal of this."
"But there is something wrong, isn't there? You've been quiet all night and you let me pay the bill."
"Of course, there is, I'm pregnant," she snapped.
He looked away from her, over at the window.
She shook her head. "I didn't mean to get into an argument."
"Do you want me to take you home?"
"No." But tears pricked at her eyes and her voice did not come out quite as steady as she had hoped. She buried her face in her arms.
There was a rustle and then Harry was beside her, half in the doorway, with his arms around her. She lifted her head and leaned into him, glad of the comfort.
"It's not too late to change your mind. About the baby, I mean."
As much as she wished this baby did not exist she could not do that. She suspected she might regret it and was fairly certain Harry would too. "It was hard enough trying to do it the first time." She sat up and looked at him. "I don't want to go through that again."
He put one hand on her cheek. "You will let me know if there's anything you need?"
She nodded and managed a small smile. In response he leaned in and kissed her; just a peck on the lips.
"I taste horrible."
He smiled. "No, you don't."
It was an invitation and he was leaving the next move up to her. "Harry," she said, "I..." She did not want him near her stomach, to see and feel the evidence of the baby growing there. She had resolved to break it off with him once the baby was gone but now that was further in the future and there were too many complications. She needed someone and he was the only one that knew; she was not intending on telling anyone else, so she could keep it quiet as long as possible.
Her head was full of all the reasons to put a stop to this now but her body betrayed her and reminded her how much she liked it. So she put one hand at the back of his neck and kissed him more passionately.
"We're not having sex on your bathroom floor," she said when she pulled back.
He just smiled at her and put out a hand to help her up.
